When in doubt push 3. We had one of our fellow buzzies keep track for six months and answer three came up slightly more than the others. I've also been told the except questions are almost always 5.

I also use 3 for the CD games. I tend to use 1 for the BT games.

I usually go with 1 unless it's obviously incorrect then it's off to 3. Its purely subjective but I think 2 is the least frequent answer, and Barbie is dead on with the except questions being 5. I usually just start there and switch as necessary.

If the question asks "which of these is mismatched" or similar wording, often it is also '3'.

At one time, France or China was almost an absolute, now BT has gotten sneaky.

If Architect or Architecture is one of the answers, guess it :).

Unless it's up against Napolean the aviator in France.

3 is my generic guess in either game.

Although, if it was the last answer, then I'll either go 1 in BT, 4 in CD, or longest answer in either.
I'm not saying that's a winning strategy. It is just my habit.

On BT, when you have no clue, pick number 2.

On CD, when you have no idee, pick number 3.

3 on CD seems to work the more arcane the question is.

It's been said before, but I agree with it. Guessing any one number will help you 20% of the time in CD or 25% of the time in BT. I'd much rather guess at an answer than at that answer's number. There's always a chance that locked away somewhere in your subconsciousness, that bit of information is trying to surface. By guessing at a number, you don't give it a chance...

Blind number guessing is also the reason I don't really enjoy Speed Freaks. Especially in a BWW-type setting in which I don't know most of the players. Last week, I'm almost positive that a table of four each had a predetermined number to blindly push. With the scores they had been putting up prior to SF, their .01-.02 reaction times were a little suspect...

I have tried guessing based on answers as well and would sometimes find out that my other guessing method would have given me the 1000 points for the question. Sometimes my guessing is based on the mood I am in for that time.

That is the problem with the game Speed Freaks. The bigger problem in most BWWs for the game Speed Freaks is the lag issue.

Congrats to SUNKIS whose default 1 did very well tonight during Topix. I thought I knew better in the third round. She stuck to her guns and kicked some game.

I did a statistical analysis of this very question for the Annals of Improbable Research, and proved pretty conclusively that "3" occurs in no statistically significant greater frequency than the other numbers. Because the snooty editors at AIR turned it down, I posted it on the Buzztime website here (post number 46):

http://www.buzztime.com/players/showthr ... light=myth

It will be available for the next few days, I guess (Table 4 is available on post 50).

I tried to add it as a file here, but no matter which format I saved it to (.pdf, .rtf, .doc, and no extension), the site told me the extension was not allowed. Perhaps Dante could tell me how one is supposed to add MSWord files.

I'm sure it's a setting on PHPBB. I'll take a look for it. Given how easily computers are infected by Word documents (few users bother to apply the MS patches needed), it may not even be allowed, though.

The MSWord version was 53KB, the PDF was more like 86KB.

I will use 3 when I don't have clue to CD ... lately for BT it has been 2 which seems to hit more often and for music and categories I have no clue on I now look for an answer/singer/artist I have never even heard of and go with that.

seen lots of folks use the 'longest' answer method and anytime it says France/Paris or Napoleon just go with it.

I guess 3 in CD games and Premium games. It seems to work for me.
I guess 5 in the BT 15 minute games. That does not work.

These work a lot:

1) Any time France is there
2) Any time Napoleon is there
3) Any time you can say, "Why would they bother typing all that if it weren't right?"
4) Same as 3, but includes use of hyphens or other odd characters.
5) Any time Aviation is up there.
6) Any time Architecture is up there WITHOUT Aviation being up there.
7) Any time Spotes or Megumi say it's the answer.

I pick 3 or the last answer for except questions. I also have the following guessing rules:

Always pick: bird, aviator, Australia, Japan, Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare, Wyatt Earp (unless Jesse James is also a choice), fish (if no bird), sex (unless that is the obvious answer), France (if Australia and Japan are gone), Jupiter, Pacific Ocean, the human body, cheese, the one name you have never heard of before, the second to the largest number, saxaphone, Kent State, drink it, Spencer Tracy, Marilyn Monroe, The Ronettes, Diana Ross, brain, barnacle, ritz, Astor and for sports: Baseball if it's USA, Hockey if Canada (eh?), otherwise Soccer.

I hope that helps. Guess immediately. Never change a guess until you know. (I wish I followed that one, yeah.) When it's correct, declare, "Oops, I got the right answer!"

After reading all your options, just choose '3'. :P
