Playing the 2:30 PDT Countdown this afternoon (08.09.18), in the third round I was confronted with the following question:

WHICH MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE WAS KNOWN FOR KILLING THOSE WHO COULDN'T SOLVE A RIDDLE?

1. CHIMERA
2. ...
3. LILJOL
4. CYCLOPS
5. SPHINX

Once CYCLOPS and CHIMERA were eliminated, I was feeling pretty good about my answer, #3 LILJOL. But then it turned out to be #5: SPHINX.

I collected my usual 192 points and coughed up yet another 14K. "This is the last time," I told myself quite loudly, thereby discomfiting the bar patrons around me, all of them civilians, "that I ever take LILJOL. Never again will I take LILJOL." I'm suspicious that everyone who overheard me was convinced that LILJOL is a drug which is only sporadically effective in combating bipolar disorder. I'm very suspicious. My suspicions are justifiable, don't you agree? You don't? I can see it in your eyes. But you're wrong. I'm right, and you're wrong.

A couple of years ago the Tailgate Showdown group first saw LILJOL in the dropdown box, and since that cohort are Tuesday-only players, they were asking, "What's a LILJOL?"

"LILJOL is a mythological creature who might kill you if you can't solve the riddle," I replied, with orphic wisdom.

If I were asked that question today, I might still offer up the same answer. Who's right, me or Buzztime's content crew?

I think it was Pliny the Elder who first classed LILJOL among the apocryphal beasts with VADA PINSON JR, who also shows up in unlikely places, outside the friendly confines of Giza.

You'll have to excuse me, I need to break off here and take my medication. Nurse insists.

I know most won't believe me but I ran into a LILJOL last month in the OC. By the grace of God I answered his riddle and he spared my life.

Good to see you in the Final Top 20 in Countdown, RHYNO, where you seem to take up residence with discouraging regularity, very often at my own expense.

Rhyno does make a regular habit of doing that.

Within this context, RHYNO's tagline - "You really can taste the goat'' - seems especially appropriate.

Yes and by knowing Rhyno, does prove your point.
