Yeah, and that last place team actually had a winning record. I sat through a lot of really bad years with that team, but that wasn't one of them (other than they wouldn't let them in the playoffs).
I think that's about the time the NHL started to realize their playoff system was all screwed up. Back then, only 5 teams missed the playoffs. That year, 6 teams that had losing records quailfied for the playoffs while 2 teams that had winning records didn't qualify. (And that was back in the years when any loss counted as a loss) Divisional playoffs were fun/intense, but they made the regular season completely meaningless (even far moreso than it is today).
