While correcting my "fading" Christy Mathhewson knowledge...  My best attempt at "alternate" hockey questions in You choose round... for those not bold enough to try  This Washington Capital led the NHL in goals twice in the 1990s ( Bondra, Oates, Berube, Langway, McInnis) This Superstar led NHL in goals in 1988 despite being on a last place team ( Kurri,Gretzky,Nicholls,Lemieux,Jagr).. |

I sat through a lot of really bad years with that team, but that wasn't one of them (other than they wouldn't let them in the playoffs). I think that's about the time the NHL started to realize their playoff system was all screwed up. Back then, only 5 teams missed the playoffs. That year, 6 teams that had losing records quailfied for the playoffs while 2 teams that had winning records didn't qualify. (And that was back in the years when any loss counted as a loss) Divisional playoffs were fun/intense, but they made the regular season completely meaningless (even far moreso than it is today). |
