Ordinarily, the team at the Black Anus is short a few (or many) players due to summer vacations. This month would be different. We have some long-time players from the team visiting us this summer. Ashley, who earned her Ph.D. at UMN and then moved away, is back in town. That encouraged several other players from the old HEBEGB table (Bart, Sally and Raoul) to rejoin the team for this game. We were also happy to see U.S. Army Capt. James Brickey, walk in tonight. He’s on leave awaiting the start of his next assignment, a graduate degree program at Wright-Patterson AFB. Everybody had time to catch up and settle in for the…

Worn-up Round

1. What is the name of Spain’s new King? FELIPE VI. 2. Eric Hill wrote and illustrated this popular book for very young children: WHERE’S SPOT? 3. Fast fashion clothing retailer H & M originated in ___ in 1947: SWEDEN. 4. A kris is a dagger that plays an important role in ___ traditions: INDONESIAN. 5. Rattus Rattus, aka the ___ rat, originated in Asia and reached Europe by the First Century: BLACK. 6. What is the title of Al Gore’s 1992 Environmental book? EARTH IN THE BALANCE. 7. A ronin is a type of: SAMURAI. 8. This city on the banks of the River Senne is headquarters of the European Union: BRUSSELS. 9. Pleurisy, the inflammation of the pleura, is an ailment of the ___ area: LUNG. 10. “Suddenly Last Summer” and “Orpheus Descending” are plays by: TENNESSEE WILLIAMS.

Whoa, the team was off to a horrendous start. We blew WU 1, 5-way split on WU 2, and salvaged 2-ways on WU’s 3 and 4. After that we hit our stride to complete the round well.

The team was up to 16 players for tonight’s game. This is about four more than our average. We hope the management of the BA noticed this tonight. The extra brain power should also help during the…

Ground-down Round

1. Bayesian inference is a term most commonly used in this field: STATISTICS. 2. A Dougla is a person of African and ___ descent: EAST INDIAN. 3. “My Inventions: The Autobiography of ___” is a book compiled by Ben Johnson: NIKOLA TESLA. 4. The first official coins produced by the U.S. Mint were cents made of: COPPER. 5. “Before I Die,” “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Forever Eighteen” are novels dealing with: ADOLESCENT MORTALITY. 6. Andre Le Notre was the landscape architect for: LOUIS XIV. 7. In astronomy, open and globular are two types of: STAR CLUSTERS. 8. Equitation is another term for: HORSEMANSHIP. 9. Half Moon Cay is one of the many islands that make up the: BAHAMAS. 10. Sports fans of the early 1970’s might know that Chet Walker once led his league in: FREE THROW PERCENTAGE. 11. The approach to justice that allows victims to participate in the process is called: RESTORATIVE JUSTICE. 12. Toy manufacturer Ty Warner is best known for: BEANIE BABIES.

Dang it! The team started another round a lap behind the Buzzies. We had trouble on GD 3, 4, 6 and 11. With all of the new places being filled, the level of chatter in our area was noticeably higher. BLZBUB hoped this would be beneficial to our team moderator for the…

Scatology Round

S1. MEDICINE v newspaper columnists
Which common expression conveys the concept of “parasympathetic rebound”?
SCARED TO DEATH. {For all intents, this was a 5-way split.}

S2. World geography v GEMSTONES
What color is schorl, the most common mineral in the tourmaline group?
BLACK. {We flubbed this one, until saved by the 3rd clue.}

S3. MIDDLE AGES v gawd-damned-pink-fuzzy-venomous animules
The Hundred Years’ War was fought over the legal succession to the throne of:
FRANCE. {Nailed it.}

S4. Gemstones v MEDICINE
Torus Platinus is a condition of the: MOUTH. {We got this one also.}

S5. G-d-p-f-v animules v WORLD GEOGRAPHY
Jan Mayen is an Arctic Ocean island belonging to this nation: NORWAY. {BLZBUB broke the ice on this one.}

S6. Newspaper columnists v MIDDLE AGES
During the Middle Ages, the Duke of___ was the premier lay peer of the Kingdom of France: BURGUNDY. {DUFF got this one for us, so we didn’t need to “wine” about it.}

The extra players were both a help and hindrance for that last round. Our moderator, CHILL, was a little slow in picking up the offerings from the two tables and did not call the correct answers repeatedly as required.
Frightening Round

1. The cities of Pittsburg, Buffalo and Cleveland are part of what iss commonly called the ___ belt: RUST. 2. When a newborn exits the pelvis feet first it is called a ___ birth: BREECH. 3. Literally, the word democracy means: RULE BY THE PEOPLE. 4. “The Silkworm,” a novel written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, is by: J.K. ROWLING. 5. We get the word bandana from this language: TAMIL. 6. Gerry Goffin, former husband and collaborator of ___, died in June of 2014: CAROL KING. 7. The three species of zebra are Grevy’s, plains and: MOUNTAIN.

In a predictable reversal, we had no trouble with the early questions, but came up short on F5 and7.

Py-ram-it Round

P1. Republic Day is a holiday celebrated every January 26th in: INDIA. {Kudos and raves go to MINRVA, the only person on the team with a clue about this question.}

P2. Refracting, reflecting and ___ are the three types of telescopes:
CATADIOPTRIC. {BLZBUB saw this one coming from just over the horizon.}

P3. Twenty previously unpublished poems by Nobel Laureate ___ were just discovered: PABLO NARUDA. {We had trouble sorting out and eliminating the non-Nobel poets and played it safe with the 5-way.}

P4. Fordow, Natanz, Arak and Isfahan are the main nuclear facilities in: IRAN. {BLZBUB and DUFF were in a dead heat to pre-call this answer.}

P5. Tefillin are a set of small black leather boxes containing verses from the: TORAH. {HEBEGB or Bart gets the credit here, IMHO.}

That was a better than average round with four correct and only one split.

Final Tragedy, on the Topic of: CLASSICAL MUSIC

Which musical work required 26 years for its completion?

1. Handel’s Messiah
2. Messiaen’s St. Francis
3. Wagner’s Ring Cycle
4. Berg’s Violin Concerto
5. Mozart’s Requiem???

The order of the eliminations was 5, 4, 1, and 2, leaving #3, WAGNER’S RING CYCLE, as the correct answer. Although we have no specific classic music maven, the team was able to work this one out quickly.

Once the team’s nerves had settled, we compiled the top six scores for this game. They were 49224, 48962, 48303, 46441, 45196 and 44903 points. We were heartened to see an above-average final team tally of 47,172 points.

We were cheering raucously upon seeing this was the NUMBER ONE score for the Mt/Pac Zone of play. This was also good enough to place SIXTH for the entire system. Notably, three Canadian teams placed in the Top 5, including Big Guys of Winnipeg, MB for first place. They edged out the Fellowship by just over 1000 points with a score of 52+ K. Then it was Scotland Yard Pub of Toronto, Mad River of NYC, and New Edinburg Pub of Ottawa for 3rd to 5th place, the latter edging out the Black Anus by 876 points.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supplied some of the alternate category (alter-gory) questions from the recent games of this month.

That is the main reason I bother to transcribe and post the Showdown Recaps.

I'd like to think that this trend is going to be more prominent in the coming weeks as many teams' players are going to be on vacation.

Please keep up the good work folks. This board deserves it.

The first newspaper columnists question was about the two brothers who wrote a column for (I think) the Baltimore Sun. We answered the only two brothers we knew who wrote a column: Joseph and Stewart Alsop and that, fortunately, was correct.

First World Geography question asked about two places (deserts?) one of them Nazca, and asked to identify the country they were in; I pre-called Peru as the answer. Sorry that I didn't recall the question better.

Second gemstone question related to the term "chatoyancy," which refers to a "cat's-eye" gem.

Well, hell. IIRC the other desert was Sechura (though my increasingly decrepit, fragile lil mind is likely wrong yet again :( )

That could well be, although a short Wikipedia search seemed to show Sechura and Nazca as names for the same desert. Buzztime would never make that kind of mistake!! :mrgreen:

the first columnist question identified the name of the column the brothers wrote together, "matter of fact," and the newspaper, new york herald tribune. the two brothers as xtrain said were joseph and stewart alsop. we did not do well with that question.

the first world geography question did pretty much ask what country the sechura and the nazca deserts were in.

We had a minor quibble with Pyramid 2--having precalled "radio," we scrambled when it was not a choice. The question should be reworded "the three types of OPTICAL telescopes."

The two Animals questions were
2) The jerboa is a rodent whose habitat is the (desert). (or words to that effect) and
5) Vicunas and guanacos are native to this mountain range (Andes).

Even the animal-hating Black Angus crew could have gotten these!
