Someone who knows more than I will write you, but I understood that the former Grand Salami team is playing at BWW Arlington.

Right you are. And now BT has posted the correct rankings. An updated set of rankings should be posted as soon as I check the figures over.

"That's a pretty fine splitting of the hairs by the Buzzies." - BLZBUB

Last Tuesday the bartender poured her last customers, all four of them, out of the bar, and onto Main Street. No problem: Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow, all walked off arm in arm. All four of them had scored above their averages in both Showdown and Brainbuster.
They weren't halfway down the block when they encountered a telephone booth, in which two sumo wrestlers were grappling. Since it's unusual to encounter this activity at midnight, in such a venue, there was some uncertainty how to propose the inevitable wager.

Then the Scarecrow had a bright idea! "Check it out! The bigger guy wears a mawashi decorated with a yellow star, crossed with a field hoe and an AK-47. The other guy has a mawashi decorated with a black star!"
"Forgive my asking," replied the Tin Man. "What's a mawashi?"
"It's a diaper," Dorothy replied, with unusual asperity, "worn by fat guys. Their diapers, or mawashi, are the flags of Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. These guys must be gaijin. My dime is on the smaller one, Guinea-Bissau, with the black star. Any takers?"
Since they all figured the bigger of the two would win, the boys hastily pooled what little was left in their wallets and came up with $60. Sure enough, the wager had scarcely been placed when Guinea-Bissau was expelled on his backside. The boys didn't even have time to heave a sigh of relief before the loser bounced to his feet, and raising his fists in the air, shouted to the heavens, "I won! I won!"
"Pay up, fellas," Dorothy demanded, palm out.
"But I thought the point..." protested the Cowardly Lion, stuttering to a halt.
"...Is to gain your independence," Dorothy finished for him. "That other guy'll be stuck in there for another year or two," here pointing to the telephone booth, which rattled alarmingly under Mozambique's relentless hammering. "Anyhow, here's my convertible. Where you off to, Big Boy?"
"Portugal: I have some papers to sign in Lisbon."
"I'm only going as far as the Emerald City," Dorothy replied, "but at least I can get you to the airport. Hop in."

The boys watched Dorothy's Mustang disappear before the Cowardly Lion broke the silence:
"That emasculating, ball-busting witch!"
"Temper your language," advised the Woodman. "If you're right, and she's been sitting at Elphaba's knee, you may wake up tomorrow missing more than twenty bucks and a phantom relic."
"Phantom relic?" asked the Scarecrow. "Are you referring to colonial empire?"
Sure enough, the telephone booth had dissolved - whether into thin air or civil war was anyone's guess.

Last night a former member of our team came by for the first time in years. He had forgotten his login password and being a gentleman of certain age he just didn't want to fool with the creating a new name just for the one evening. He is a former music teacher retired for many years it's doubtful he will be back any time soon. He says that he just doesn't get out much accept for church and the occasional visit with the grand kids. This is his old handle http://www.buzztime.com/profile?pid=15552
But last night he said he just would play as a guest and tell us answers. His quitting is really what has kept us probably from doing better the last couple years. But that's how it is sometimes, I was wondering if you could let us keep his 48564 for our average?

I sympathize with your plight--We used to run into similar circumstances from time to time. However, the precedent on this has long been established that posted HOF scores are the official scores for tournament calculation. BWW-Arlington had an even more serious problem in this regard in a previous tournament when the system would not let some members login with their PP accounts; and we reluctantly ruled against counting non-registering scores for the same reason. I don't really mean to be Procrustean about it, but in order to be consistent (and fair to other teams who have had to face similar circumstances in the past) I am going to have to go with the official posted score.

To avoid this problem in the future, I would strongly recommend that you create an alternative registered handle to give to non-registered drop-in guests or latecomers. That way, you can be sure everybody's score will count.

Sorry the news was not better for your team, and best wishes on the rest of the tournament.

If I've counted correctly, no team sitting above 89 right now actually wants a drop. My homeboys at 8th Street Grille are sitting squarely on the bubble.

With two weeks left in the first round, I venture to guess that ALL teams ought to be hoping to drop one of their existing scores, because it will mean they will have done even better in the following two weeks.

There does appear to be quite the traffic jam around 89-90k, but with more than 125k points still theoretically available, it is still pretty open. I'm guessing at this point that when all is said and done, the bubble will be somewhere around or north of 135k.

At present, an astonishing 23 of 34 teams have posted two 40k+ results. At this point it's entirely possible that a team could run off all four quizzes well up the national leaderboard and still fail to qualify for single elimination. You've drawn a remarkable field, ANON. But in reviewing my own 700-game Showdown history, I don't think it's going to happen. There are just too many altogether plausible ways to bitch up the last six questions in a Showdown quiz. So I'm going to stick by my guns, indeed, expand my observation: any team dropping a 40k shall qualify.

Please excuse my owlishness. As with my Minnesota Vikings, I look up and see too damn many good teams.

We didn't in Kent, and texts to two other teams in the network confirmed that it was not a local issue.

We didn't either and website is tracking it as a repeat game which I cannot remember it being...

It was not. I have sent a note to BT through their website (through the "Contact Us" link under the "Help" menu).

Well....

The HOF is not yet posted, but our scores are showing on the website. They're right, but the average showing is wrong.

Our top six scores are 61,872, 61,174, 61,132, 60,429, 59,143, and 59092. All six are registered member accounts.
http://www.buzztime.com/site/31938/game ... 0923170000
My math shows that our total is 362, 842, for an average of 60,473.67, which should round down to 60,473.

Yet the history showing for our site shows an average of 58,997. http://www.buzztime.com/site/31938/game ... gameid/194
That works out to a total of six boxes at 353,982 to 353,987. Where those 8,855-8,860 points disappeared is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. (Thanks, Winston!)

Rick, the site average shown on the BT website is for all 9 boxes in play for that game not the 6 box average used for the HOF
The site average has nothing to do with the 5 or 6 box scoring average of the HOF, unless you had exactly 5 or 6 boxes in play, then it matches.

Looks like our Showdown scores were too good, so Buzztime decided we weren't worthy.

I'm holding out hope that the Buzzies are still working on fixing this. However, if it doesn't get the East HOF right in the next few hours, I'll have to go to each location's individual page and calculate the averages for last night. Because of this, official tournament standings here may be delayed.

Thank you for your patience.

Note that all of the top 200 individual scores in Showdown East have asterisks next to them, indicating Buzztime believes them to be the result of a repeat game. Ours was definitely NOT a repeat game, and a conversation I had about the game with a player from Houlihans Westbury indicated that they had the same (non-repeat) game we did. If these individual scores are complete, Houlihans clearly won the East feed this week.

Is it possible this quiz was assembled from content pre-existing in Buzztime's library? This quiz as a whole was unfamiliar (to the players at my table), but Questions 39, 40, and 41 were too obvious to seem original.

If NTN thinks the East played a repeat but the West was okay, does that imply that East & West were NOT playing the same game?

We had a Lauren Bacall category, clearly in place because of her recent death. It sure didn't seem like a repeat game.

The West, as we know, is always* playing a repeat game. Not a game that they've seen before, but you all know what I mean.

Regardless, the game we saw in Minneapolis was definitely not one we'd seen before. We did well, though we were slow on the last question. Our average was about 49.9K. As many of you seem to be implying - we did well not because it was a repeat game, but because we knew the answer to the questions.
