Well, old BLZBUB is late for his self-imposed deadline to publish the recap. It seems Old Scratch has been busy preparing Casa Chaos for the Ragged Rascals trivia team Holiday Festival. Nonetheless other than the higher calling of hosting a party could deter the Horned One from this self-appointed, heavy duty. So here we go with the…

Worn-up Round

1. By definition a skinflint is a: MISER. 2. In Italian cuisine, ___ are Dumpling-like edibles which substitute for pasta: GNOCCHI. 3. In Judaism, a mikveh is a: RITUAL BATH. 4. Kirkus is a ___ magazine founded in 1933: BOOK REVIEW. 5. Herpes Zoster is more commonly known as: SHINGLES. 6. Dilma Rousseff won re-election as President of ___ in October 2014: BRAZIL. 7. Which Soul great began his career as a member of the Famous Flames: JAMES BROWN. 8. Basmati is a variety of: LONG-GRAIN RICE. 9. Which South American country has both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea coasts? COLOMBIA. 10. In chemistry, Esters are: COMPOUNDS.

The team was not miserly with its answers and had a successful round. The best call of the round was by CHILL, who sang James Brown at the right time. This set up a run going into the…

Ground-down Round

1. ‘The Notebook,’ ‘The Best of Me’ and ‘Dear John’ are books by: NICHOLAS SPARKS. 2. In 1821, ___ included states named Sonora, Nueva Vizcaya, and Texas: MEXICO. 3. What was Jean Peltier investigating when he discovered the effect named after him: ELECTRICITY. 4. A catafalque is a raised platform that is used to support a: COFFIN. 5. About half the North American white colonists during the 17th and 18th Centuries were: INDENTURED SERVANTS. 6. “Shuss’ is a term used in this sport: SKIING. 7. Which famous hymn was written by John Newton, a mariner and Captain of slave ships? AMAZING GRACE. 8. It is the heat treatment that alters the microstructure of a material: ANNEALING. {Which makes BLZBUB wonder, does ‘Amazing Grace’ leave one a-kneeling?} 9. 2014 marks the Centenary of the birth of this Welsh poet: DYLAN THOMAS. 10. Which bird belongs to the same genus as the American Robin: COMMON BLACKBIRD. {JAX made the connection to the European bird that is unrelated to what we North Americans call a blackbird.} 11. Chicken adobo, lumpia, and lechon kawali are prime examples of items in ___ cuisine: FILIPINO. 12. One of the earliest bits of written poetry, the Sumerian ‘Hymn to Ninkasi’ praises the: GODDESS OF BEER. {Ummmm…beer!}

That was another good round for the Ragged Rascals. Answers were heard from virtually every corner of the room. Now maybe we can rock the…

Scatology Round

S1. THE HOT STOVE LEAGUE v awards
Slugger Nelson Cruz has left the Baltimore Orioles to sign with the: SEATTLE MARINERS. {OOPS, the Rascals have chosen <pause> unwisely.}

S2. MYTHOLOGY v feminists
‘The Mabinogion’ is the title of a collection of ancient ___ stories: WELSH. {We couldn’t decide which of the U.K.’s lesser regions collected these.}

S3. U.S. Classical music v SCIENCE
Radial keratotomy is a form of ___ surgery: EYE. {Aye, Aye skipper, you’re correct.}

S4. Feminists v THE HOT STOVE LEAGUE {Having been burned once on the Hot Stove, we returned to it anyway.}
The Oakland Athletics recently traded ___ to the Toronto Blue Jays: JOSH DONALDSON. {LOONEY, our Bay Area transplant, made this call.}

S5. SCIENCE v mythology
When was the XY chromosomal sex determination system discovered? 1905. {We tanked this one.}

S6. Awards v U.S. CLASSICAL MUSIC
‘Bambola,’ ‘Le Banjo’ and ‘Morte’ are pieces by this New Orleans-born composer:
LOUIS MOREAU GOTTSCHALK. {New Orleans-born BLZBUB was all over this one like red beans on rice. Booyah!}
The team only managed to get three of the six 100 per cent correct. Ugh!

People have been asking BLZBUB all night what they should bring to the party. He really doesn’t care as long as they show up and drink some of his excess quantities of booze. After that last round, the whole team felt in need of a stiff shot of something. Let’s hope the losing streak doesn’t carry over into the…

Frightening Round

1. More formally a water pill is called a: DIURETIC. 2. On the Periodic Table, Mn is the symbol for: MANGANESE. 3. Monogram Pictures and Republic Pictures were examples of what Hollywood called: POVERTY ROW. 4. This Asian plant from the Genus Pogostemon is known for its very strong scent: PATCHOULI. 5. The cockle is a small, edible: CLAM. 6. Who played the Japanese detective Mr. Moto in a series of films? PETER LORRE. 7. Muslin is a ___ fabric: COTTON.

There was a bit of indecision on F3 and F5, but most players got the full pull on both of them. The Rascals are looking a bit Ragged in the last two rounds. Perhaps we can do better than average in the…

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Drury Lane, a London street, is known for being the location of a celebrated Royal:
THEATER. {We were correct, but some wag said it was home to the Muffin Man.}

P2. Hipparchus, discovered the precession of the equinoxes and is called the Founder of: TRIGONOMETRY. {While looking for an ‘A’ in math, we hit upon this answer.}

P3. Which tall waterfall is in South Africa?
TUGELA. {ARG, a 5-wat split was the best we could do.}

P4. Blaise Compaore recently resigned as President of this country after 27 years in office: BURKINA FASO. {We got lost going up the Upper Volta.}

P5. Which animal was domesticated most recently?
RABBIT {You Scwewy Rabbit, you tricked us again.}

Half of the team was on 4 of 5, while the rest were going to need to be satisfied with 3 of 5 correct for that unaccountably difficult Pyramid Round. This leaves us about par for the course on this game. The Rascals wonder if we can save the Championship with a strong drive on the…

FINAL TRAGEDY, on the Topic of: ETHNIC TERMS

‘Hapa’ means person of mixed racial heritage in this language:

1. Uto-Aztecan
2. HAWAIIAN
3. Malaysian
4. Norwegian
5. Filipino

The order of the eliminations was 3, 5, 1, and 4, leaving #2, HAWAIIAN, as the correct answer.

BLZBUB screwed this one up for the whole team and is still in high dudgeon with himself over this failure. He intends to take it out on the cross-town rivals, the Smegtasters, as soon as he fixes upon a suitable punishment.

The mangy top six scores came in at 52504, 41529, 40190, 34995, 17383 and 17150. The <gut punch> final average was a lowly 33,953 points, which to nobody’s surprise came in at SEVENTEENTH place for the Mt/Pac Zone of play. This was also a discouraging 65TH Place for all teams playing. RATS! Big Hairy frakking rats!

Oh well, like the Cubs fans say, “Maybe next year.”

PS. I just saw Anon's tale of the game of distraction. Wow, even BLZBUB is impressed by that display of fortitude. Well done!

Thank you for the write-up. The bar where I played at (Adams Mill) went with your choices on five of the six Category Round questions, but I don't recall the other question. We did go with Awards in Question #6, and I vaguely recall a question about a literary award, but I have nothing.

I am curious what the first US Classical Music question was.
