Of course some of the team had to pick today to travel or start prep for Thanksgiving meals. The team did manage to scratch up 9 players for tonight’s tilt. That would have to suffice, even though it meant some of our topic specialists were not present.

Worn-up Round

1. Who is the current Prince of Wales? PRINCE CHARLES. 2. Ed Skrein is the star of the latest edition of this movie series: THE TRANSPORTER. 3. Ghost dance is the name of a religious movement among the ___ of the late 19th Century: NATIVE AMERICANS. 4. An awl is a long, pointed: SPIKE. 5. It has the largest population of any U.S. state capital: PHOENIX. 6. Mount ___ is considered to be the world’s southernmost active volcano: EREBUS. 7. ‘A Man for All Seasons’ is Robert Bolt’s play about the life of this martyred statesman: SIR THOMAS MORE. 8. ___ Gold and Red are favored types of cannabis: ACAPULCO. 9. Trichinosis a disease caused by ROUNDWORMS. 10. ‘Normcore’ is a term used in the world of: FASHION. {Fashion was not our passion at the Copa.}

After running nine of ten correct, our answer was out of fashion on the last question of this round.

Ground-down Round

1. 92-year-old Virginia McCaskey owns this sports team: CHICAGO BEARS. {Without KURGAN, we fumbled this one.} 2. In its literal sense, the expression ‘lie fallow’ refers to: AGRICULTURAL LAND. 3. Famed Muscle Shoals sound studio is located in this state: ALABAMA. 4. Which type of fish is Lox made from? SALMON. 5. ‘A Demon in my View,’ ‘Live Flesh,’ and ‘Portobello’ are novels by the late: RUTH RENDEL. {We couldn’t eliminate the ‘still alive’ ones fast enough to score big points here, so we were saved by the third clue.} 6. In what year was the first soldier buried at Arlington National Cemetery? 1864.
7. Which of these is classified as an echinoderm? SAND DOLLAR. 8. In the world of cocktails, there are more than 100 types of: MARTINIS. 9. She was the first woman whose image appeared on U.S. currency: POCAHONTAS. 10. The aim of the ‘Amazing Adventures around the World’ video game is to find a very expensive: DIAMOND. {This one was very expensive in points paid.} 11. Which bird is the emblem of the Royal Canadian Air Force: EAGLE. 12. Australia has a new Prime Minister named: MALCOLM TURNBULL.

We got seven of the twelve without difficulty, but had to be saved by the third clue on GD’s 1, 5, 10, 11 and 12.

Scatology Round

S1. 19TH CENTURY HISTORY v Shakespeare
Ignacio Zaragoza commanded the winning forces at the Battle of Puebla in the year: 1862. {After first starting out on the year of the First Battle of Puebla, which the Mexicans lost, the team switched to 1862 on the third clue. Rats!}

S2. Islands of the world v GENERAL SCIENCE
Where would you most likely find a substance called chitin?
CLAM SHELL. {We confusedly split two-ways here.}

S3. World business v 2015 MOVIES
Who plays notorious gangster Whitey Bulger in the new film ‘Black Mass’?
JOHNNY DEPP. {Finally, an easy one.}

S4. GENERAL SCIENCE v 19th Century history
Which scientist would be concerned with inliers and outliers?
GEOLOGIST. {After more confusion, we were saved by the third clue.]

S5. 2015 MOVIES v Islands of the world
‘Southpaw’ is a hit 2015 movie about a:
BOXER. {We also got this one. Unlike Holm vs. Rousey, it didn’t lay a glove on us.}

S6. Shakespeare v WORLD BUSINESS
Arcelormittal is one of the world’s largest ___ companies:
STEEL. {Thanks to ‘The Economist Magazine,’ we got this one.}

Although the ‘boxer’ question didn’t harm us, all of the non-movie questions left us punch-drunk at the end of this round. Now we just hope we don’t have to throw in the towel on the…

Frightening Round

1. In geometry, what is a 2-simplex? TRIANGLE. {Blech!} 2. In which classic novel does the character of Roger Chillingworth appear? THE SCARLET LETTER. 3. The RSX and CT6 are models of: CADILLAC CARS. 4. This writer is known for her series of novels featuring Texas Ranger Crawford Hunt: SANDRA BROWN. {We two-wayed this one.} 5. Which substance is composed of about 98% air? STYROFOAM. 6. Jean-Claude Juncker is currently the President of this entity: EUROPEAN COMMISSION. 7. What company made news last month when it offered to but EMC for about $67 Billion? DELL. {Only about half the team was fast enough to get points on this one.}

This was a rough, and frightening, round. We missed F1, 2-way on F4, and we mostly missed F7. Maybe we can redeem ourselves on the…

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. They were created in the early 18th Century as a gift for Musgrave Christian Ludwig: BRANDENBURG CONCERTOS.

P2. The Sepik River flows 700 miles across New Guinea before emptying into the:
BISMARCK SEA. {Too difficult to say who called it first.}

P3. In feudal times, the term ‘scutage’ referred to a type of:
TAX. {DUFF, the history maven, got this one for us.]

P4. January 19, 1983 marked the release of this Apple computer:
LISA. {Given that all of the other choices were ‘Simpsons’ characters, this was trivial.}

P5. This three-act opera is set in the city of Mantua in the 16th Century:
RIGOLETTO. {Once again, an opera question bites our back-side.}

That round was gut-wrenching. The team managed to get 6 boxes through the round with four of five correct by dint of lucky guesses. Even the easier questions left us with a queasy feeling, and the difficult ones made life easy for the Borg. Oh well, on to the…

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: COLLEGE DROPOUTS

He studied for six years at Stanford before leaving without a degree in 1925:

1. John Steinbeck
2. Herbert Hoover
3. George Patton
4. Jimmy Stewart
5. Jonas Salk

The order of the eliminations was 5, 4, 3, and 2, leaving #1, JOHN STEINBECK, as the correct answer. It is hard to describe the confusion and loss of confidence that this question engendered. It should have been easier to eliminate false choices, but the team froze up.

Given the delay at arriving at the correct answer for the Final Showdown query it was not difficult to see the top six scores come in at: 43659, 43386, 42721, 43312, 38466, and 37414 points. The resulting dismal final tally for the team was 41,326 points. Surprisingly this would yield a ranking of FIFTEENTH Place.

Danny K’s with a score of 52120 and Scooter’s Pub at 51032 were the only teams to crack 50,000 points. Third place went to Teaser’s of Chicago at 48756. Also in the Top Ten were several teams that did really well in the Sandbaggers Tournament, like Tilted Kilt, Houlihans, The Fellowship and the Concert Pub.

Congratulations to all fair-and-square (non-Borg) bars who beat us tonight. You have played a difficult game with honor.

One of the Shakespeare questions was something like

"'Something's rotten in the State of Denmark' was said by __________."

MARCELLUS
the answer choices included only one other character from Hamlet among other Shakespeare characters

The second 19th century history question escapes me just now. ANON should recall it... or at least the answer.

The other history category question asked which city was the first capital of a reunited Italy (TURIN). We mostly whiffed on that one.

We also quibbled with the "chitin" question. Clams are not crustaceans. Any kind of arthropod should have been given as an example.

Congrats to Danny K's for the win. We had one of our worst lightning rounds in recent memory and split raggedly on the last two questions, so we were actually pleasantly surprised to find ourselves in the top ten when the dust settled.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in Showdown-dom!
