Showdown Recap for 17 May 2016 at BWW Gibson in ABQ
Tonight’s game featured a familiar dirty dozen players on a team that is sorely missing some of its departed (playing elsewhere) members. The efforts of those in attendance tonight made up in some cases for the expertise not available. If the team were to return to full strength, we’d be a threat to annihilate the Borg collective playing across town from us.

{Ouch, only eight of ten correct. WU1 was a miss because our resident Canuck is now playing down in Las Lunas, and WU8 was whiffed by one-third of the team due to a miscommunication. Also, BLZBUB hopes that none of you out there forgot that NEW Mexico was one of the four New states. After all, New Mexico is much fresher than Old Mexico.}

{Another tough round, these required splits on GD7, 8 and 10. Salvation of points by the third clue was welcomed.}
1. Scatology Round
S1. Mexico City v WHAT IS IT? What in the world is Naloxone? DRUG. {JAX got this one, but refuses to share how she knows it.}
S2. The Supreme Court v BASEBALL BOOKS The business practices of this baseball team are detailed in the book ‘Moneyball’: OAKLAND A’S {This was truly a Greek Chorus answer.}

S5. Literary characters v THE SUPREME COURT This Supreme Court Justice wrote a book titled ‘The Court and the World’: STEPHEN BREYER {SCOOTR made the call for a 2-way split with Ginsburg.}
S6. What is it? v THE CRUSADES Which famous person participated in the Second Crusade during the 12th Century? ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE. {DUFF, all the way, with a rapid pre-call.}
***Several team members are highly desirous of seeing the Altergory questions on Literary Characters and Mexico City.***
{Other than for that horrid double 2-way split for this round, the team did really well here.}

Py-Ram-It Round
P1. The Uinta Mountains are the source of two tributaries of this body of water: GREAT SALT LAKE. {JAX and BLZBUB provided speculations that prompted SCOOTR to call this one correctly.}
P2. Which fictional character lives in a town called Idaville? ENCYCLOPEDIA BROWN. {This one came down to a split with Rex Morgan, because nobody on the team could specify where Rex lived.}
P3. A 2015 scientific study validated this term once considered redundant: BRONTOSAURUS. {JAX was the first to suggest this answer. Good for us.}

P5. The phenomenon known as solmization is a key part of ___ history: MUSICAL. {OK, we admit it; we were baffled and split 5-ways.}
{That round exactly matched our old bugaboo. Three correct, one 2-way, and one 5-way split told the tale for the team. After the past few months of outperformance on this round, this result was a come-down.}
FINAL TRAGEDY Topic: BIRDS
The ___ family of birds contains 17 Grossbeaks.
1. Albatross 2. Tern 3. Eagle 4. Cardinal 5. Vulture
The order of the eliminations was 2, 5, 3, and 1, leaving #4, CARDINAL, as the correct answer. Having a field ornithologist on the team certainly helped with this query. JAX was able to pre-call this answer.
The team did fairly well on this game, even with the bobbles on the Pyramid Round holding down the scores. As it turned out only one machine entered the Final Strategy Round with 5 for 5 correct on Pyramid. The vast majority of the team managed to hold on at 4 of 5 correct from Pyramid.
The top six scores were 56644, 48795, 48625, 48544, 48246, and 48175 points. The team average fell just below the 50,000 point threshold at 49,838 points for the night. So although the team finished ahead of several powerhouse teams, we saw our composite score ranked SEVENTH Place for this game.
The surprise #1 team was The LOOP of Streamwood, Il at 54,645, challenged for nirvana by The Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ at 54240, Stained Glass Pub near Baltimore, MD at 53691 and the Concert Pub of Houston, TX at 53540 points. Congratulations to all the wetware teams who beat their Borg Nemesis rivals.
