Showdown Recap for 30 Aug at BWW Gibson in ABQ

You would think that winning last week’s game would prompt an all-hands-on-deck level of attendance for this week’s game. But no, the turnout for this week’s game was anemic. The team was still well anchored, but the eleven players who did come out were well short of BLZBUB’s expectations. Never mind, the team was still ready to play when the Big Game started.

Worn-up Round

1. In Presidential history, Kenneth Starr is known for investigating: BILL CLINTON.
2. Which Shakespeare character is also known as the Moor of Venice? OTHELLO.
3. Dmitri Shostakovich gained fame in the 20th Century as a Soviet: MUSICAL COMPOSER.
4. At its peak, the Songhai Empire was one of the largest ___ states: AFRICAN. {Lost in the wilderness, the team was unable to find the Songhai.}
5. Bollinger is a notable house of: CHAMPAGNE.
6. At which sport does Deontay Wilder excel? BOXING. {Good call by WALACE}
7. The Larsen B ice shelf in ___ partially collapsed in 2002: ANTARCTICA.
8. The 2015 Lisbeth Salander crime novel is titled ‘The Girl in the ___.’ SPIDER’S WEB.
9. Who became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom earlier this year? THERESA MAY.
10. The final and most difficult labor of Hercules involved this monster: CERBERUS. {Totally different head than the Hydra which bit us. Fortunately, we did not get LILJOL’ed on this one. The team also eliminated python and manticore.}

This round was a bit concerning, because we thought we had the correct answer on the two questions we muffed. But 8 for 10 correct was pretty good.

Ground-down Round

1. Great Slave Lake is the source of the ___ River. MACKENZIE.
2. David Dinkins was sworn in as the first African-American Mayor of ___ in 1990: NEW YORK CITY.
3. Dysthymia is a clinical term for a form of: CHRONIC DEPRESSION.
4. Oka is a vegetable that is commonly used in cooking in: SOUTH AMERICA. {Bad calls steamed us.}
5. In some places, the Buteonine __ are called buzzards: HAWKS. {This excellent call came by the courtesy of JAX.}
6. Which science fiction writer was born in Canada? E. A. VAN VOGT. {Oddly enough, BLZBUB feels that we didn’t have anyone old enough to know this, even though CHILL was a research assistant to Jules Verne.}
7. What in the world is a zaddik? JEWISH SPIRITUAL LEADER. {Oof! This answer circumcised us.}
8. There are exactly four pecks in a: BUSHEL.
9. Mazagran is a kind of drinkware usually used for: COFFEE. {The team got a pottery shard up the arse on this one.}
10. The Ansel Adams and Robert Marshall Awards are given by this organization: THE WILDERNESS SOCIETY.
11. Paseo de la Reforma is a famous street that runs through the heart of: MEXICO CITY.
12. What Soviet chess master did Bobby Fischer defeat to win the World Championship in 1972? BORIS SPASKY.

This round was also far tougher than the one of last week. The team managed to get 8 of 12 correct, and grasped for salvation on the third clues of GD 4, 6, 7, and 9.

Scatology Round

S1. Literary characters v U.S. GEOGRAPHY
St. Joseph Peninsula and Fairport Peninsula are part of this state: FLORIDA.
{There was confusion on this one, due to another dumb-assed mistake by the Buzzies. The choices were Alaska, South Dakota, Nevada, Florida, and North Carolina. The first clue said, “North to Alaska.” Some of the team latched onto the ‘north’ to eliminate Carolina, forcing other to explain why that was wrong, thereby costing us time. OKAY, we get it. Neither Alaska nor North Carolina was correct, but the Buzzheads should edit out ambiguous clues dammit.}

S2. 2016 MOVIES v world holidays (like when a Canadian team wins Showdown?)
Red, Chuck, and Bomb are the main characters in this 2016 movie: THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE. {WALACE gamed this one successfully.}

S3. Champion athletes v FRENCH HISTORY
The Hundred Days is a famous period in French History that took place in: 1815. {History maven, DUFF, was dating this one before the choices appeared.}

S4. World holidays v LITAERARY CHARACTERS
Which of these is a character in Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar”? BUDDY WILLARD. {The second clue eliminated one of our 2-way candidates, saving us points.}

S5. French history v 2016 MOVIES
What character does Scarlett Johansson play in the new Captain America movie? BLACK WIDOW. {WALACE panted out this answer.}

S6. U.S. geography v CHAMPION ATHLETES
Great Britain’s Lewis Hamilton is a champion: FORMULA ONE DRIVER. {HEBEGB drove us home on this one.}

The difficulties with this game continued. The team got four of six easily, but needed clues to solve S1 and S4.

Frightening Round

1. “Turn Me Loose” is a Broadway hit that showcases the life of this comedy legend: DICK GREGORY.
2. Which commercial symbol is a trademark of General Mills? BETTY CROCKER.
3. “Star Trek ___” recently opened in movie theaters: BEYOND.
4. The NBA recently took away its All-Star Game from this city: CHARLOTTE.
5. Tularosa Basin is the home of New Mexico’s famed: WHITE SANDS.
6. ‘Is She Really Going Out with Him’ and ‘Steppin’ Out’ are song hits from: JOE JACKSON.
7. The Goji berry, touted for its health benefits, is native to: ASIA. {Dammit, this one buried us.}

Well that round sucked. It’s okay to miss the first one, but not #7. That’s a game killer.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. In legend, Albrecht Gessler’s tyranny led to the rebellion of this hero:
WILLIAM TELL. {CHILL was the first to realize Tell was no piker.}

P2. Which person would most likely be familiar with the Arrhenius Equation?
CHEMIST. {Visiting player, ARMEN from ColoSpgs, with the help of HEBEGB, figured this one out.}

P3. This language’s name comes from an Arabic word for ‘coast’ or ‘boundary’:
SWAHILI. {DUFF was the first to translate this query into an answer.}

P4. A positive integer that equals the sum of its proper positive divisors is called a ___ number: PERFECT. {Dual credit goes to two voices I can’t identify from the video.}

P5. Which French novelist wrote a series of novels featuring Marie Antoinette?
ALEXANDRE DUMAS. {Fortunately no one answered this question like a “dumb-ass.” DUFF and MEERA get the credit here.}

The team managed to get most of these correct. There was a lot of hesitation on P5, which cost us points on this round. Six boxes finished the round on 5 for 5 correct. The rest of the team scored 4 of 5 correct. That’s a nice set-up for the final round.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: AMPHIBIANS

The world’s largest amphibian is the ___ Giant Salamander.

1. Flat-footed
2. Snub-nosed
3. Horse-faced
4. Maltese
5. Chinese

The order of the eliminations was 2, 3, 1, and 4, leaving #5, CHINESE, as the correct answer. There was a lot of hubbub around the table, but an early call by ARMEN along with KURGAN seemed to carry the most weight. There was simply no consensus.

The scores on this round reflected the delays and the resultant splits. The two top scoring boxes coming into the round missed the correct answer. The next two got only 90-95% of the points wagered. The other two of the top six got the question correct for the full 50% bonus. Moving up into the top six were the boxes that came into the final question at 11th and 12th place, because those two got the full 50% of their points wagered. The boxes ranked 7 -10 did not get enough points of their wager to factor into the final tally. Those prone to over-analysis pointed out that a perfect run through the Final Tragedy by all boxes would have put the team at 53685 points for the game.

As it was the top six actually scored 52914, 52590, 52294, 52101, 45604, and 45469 points. The team average was 50,162 points. This would turn out to be FIFTH PLACE for this game, which was a bit surprising.

The winner of this game was The Fellowship with 54925 points. They were followed by Danny K’s of Orange, CA, Moose McGuire’s of Ottawa, ON, and Houlihan’s of Westbury, NY respectively.
