Showdown Recap for 20 Sep 2016 at BWW Gibson in ABQ
This week would be another week to play short-handed. Two of our stalwarts are off doing other social events. When they return to the fold, BLZBUB will need to remind them of the team rule that states “Don’t let your personal life interfere with trivia.” However the team was heartened to see the return of one of our chief fine arts mavens from her vacation in Italy. Hopefully many of the fine objet d’art that she saw will soon appear as Showdown fodder.
The team will play this game with nine souls and BLZBUB in attendance. It would turn out to be another shining example of cooperation and communication. As is BLZBUB’s habit for stellar games, credit will be apportioned to the hero of each question, starting with the…

BLZBUB thinks there was a misinterpretation of this question common to the whole team.} 4. A pow wow is a social gathering held by ___ communities: NATIVE AMERICAN. {Greek chorus.} 6. Which of these devices is used to measure the moisture content of the atmosphere? HYGROMETER. {By the rules of Jeopardy, the first to pronounce it correctly, BLZBUB, gets the credit.} 7. Traditionally a blanket of ___ is said to be draped across the winner of the Preakness Stakes. BLACK-EYED SUSANS. {KURGAN with an assist from BLZBUB.} 8. This U.S. state ranks fourth in size but forty-fourth in population: MONTANA. {CHILL.} 9. Which kind of beverage is Stella Artois? PILSNER BEER. {KURGAN & DUFF.} 10. Priscilla Chan, doctor and philanthropist, is the wife of this financial celebrity: MARK ZUCKERBERG. {JAX.}
The team average is now 4500 points. Going nine for ten on this round is considered either a good harbinger or a curse about to be brought down upon the team by the Trivia Goddess.
Ground-down Round…where the Buzzies subject our scores to ablation.
1. Denmark’s Soren Sorenson is the man to thank for the: PH SCALE. {Saved by the third clue.} 2. Newly discovered planet HD 131399AB has this unique feature: THREE SUNS. {BLZBUB.} 10. ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ is a famous musical piece composed by: EDVARD GRIEG. {There DUFF was “taken to a place, the Hall of the Mt King.”} 11. Your axilla is more commonly known as your: ARMPIT. {Saved by the third clue, because we couldn’t eliminate middle toe, belly button and ear lobe.}
As is usually the case, this round was the weakest for the night. The team average now sits at about 14,300 points (17000 possible.) Give credit to the Buzzheads for good trivia in this round. The team did manage to get 7 of the 12 right for full credit.
Scatology Round
S1. Human anatomy v U.S. HISTORY This man, sent to jail in 1918 for sedition, ran for U.S. President five times: EUGENE DEBBS. {DUFF made a pre-call here.}
S2. VOCABULARY v ancient gods (not slain by BLZBUB) To quaver is to: TREMBLE. {Greek chorus}
S3. POP SINGERS v Obscure awards (yeah right, a trivia team is going to go here?) What contemporary singer recorded ‘The Heartbeat Song’ in 2015? KELLY CLARKSON. {WALACE, also our youngest team mate, pre-called this.}
S4. Ancient gods (roasting on BLZBUB’s pyre) v HUMAN ANATOMY Reissner’s membrane and the Organ of Corti can be found in the human: EAR. {This prompted CHILL to call for the 5-way split. The third clue saved us.}
S5. Obscure Awards (won by obscure triviots) v VOCABULARY This word’s definition is ‘to blow or to breathe into or on’: INSUFFLATE. {DUFF breathed some life into this answer.}
S6. U.S. HISTORY v pop singers Charles Evan Hughes became the ___ in 1921: U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE. {DUFF got this one pretty fast.}
With the delays of answers on S4 and S6, the team averaged 5035 points of the 7000 available for this round. The team average swelters at around 19,200 points
Frightening Round
1. ‘___ Calling’ is the famous third studio album released by The Clash. LONDON. {KURGAN} 2. Japanese knotweed is considered one of the world’s worst ___ plants: INVASIVE. {JAX.} 3. The American Bystander is a new, print-only ___ magazine: HUMOR. {A full miss, from a rare miscue by DUFF.} 4. Jacob’s Pillow, located in the Berkshires, is an internationally renowned ___ center: DANCE. {MEERA.} 5. Which infamous person of the past was released from prison this month? Flooding of Biblical proportions stuck this state last month: LOUISIANA. {DUFF’s words flowed like torrents.}
The team got 6 of 7 correct on this round. Again, good fortune mandated that the miss come in the early questions. The team average is now approximately 26,000 points
Py-Ram-It Round
P1. Karl Braun shared a 1909 Nobel Prize with: Choices: Linus Pauling, James Maxwell, Thomas Edison, Alvin Karpis & GUGLIELMO MARCONI. {DUFF and BLZBUB coordinated 2-way split between Maxwell & Marconi, because neither could get the dates of death of the two straight.}
P2. Pepin the Short was the father of the first: HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR. {DUFF wore the crown for this call.}
P3. In ‘R.U.R.,’ a play by Karl Capek, what does the letter ‘U’ stand for? UNIVERSAL. {BLZBUB pre-called this one in robotic fashion. Oh by the way Buzzie, the accepted spelling of the man’s name is ‘Karel,’ which granted is Czech for Karl.}
P4. The population of this small country is only about 10,000. NAURU. {Before the five choices appeared BLZBUB was saying “it’s a South Pacific island.” Then he had to fight off the rest of the team while they tried to relocate to Europe. (Monaco, Andorra, San Marino)}
P5. Which of these animals has long, twisted horns? Choices: KUDU, kangaroo, kinkajou, kingfisher & kakapo. {KURGAN was the first to call this with confidence. Oh, he is the twisted horn-dog of the team.}
This was an extraordinary round for us. The confidence of the team in the calls of DUFF, BLZBUB & KURGAN was tested. The team held firm and eleven boxes scored 5 of 5 correct for the round. The rest of the boxes were on 4 of 5 correct. The team average now sits at near 37,560 points.
FINAL TRAGEDY Topic: SHAKESPEARE
Which Shakespeare character has his eyes gouged out?
1. King of Navarre 2. Duke of Albany 3. Governor of Paris 4. Prince of Denmark 5. Earl of Gloucester
The order of the eliminations was 1, 4, 2, and 3, leaving #5, EARL OF GLOUCESTER, as the correct answer. Before the five choices appeared, DUFF was saying the character appears in King Lear. The list of choices was easy to run for eliminations. Pretty near everyone coming into this round with the big scores from Pyramid got their full wager.
The top six boxes displayed 56869, 56803, 56292, 56191, 55669, and 55243 points for the game. The team score was a surprisingly high 56,177 points. It was surprising because of the troubles in the Countdown Round and the minor points lost in the Category and Lightening Rounds.
So 56,177 points is well above our recent average score. In the words of our good friend TTLPKG, ”res ipsa loquitur.”
The game had numerous teams with high scores. Heroes of Wichita, KS @ 54,607 Concert Pub of Houston @ 53,906 Jax Tavern of Forrest, OH @ 53,708 The Fellowship, Kent, OH @ 53,125 BWW Arlington, VA @ 50,358, BWW Kalamazoo, MI @ 49,840, and Big Guys of Winnipeg, AB @ 49,218 being among the notables in the Sandbagger Tourney that scored in tonight’s Top Ten.
