Showdown Recap for 23 May 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

This edition of the BLZBUB follies will be a bit truncated. Old Scratch is winging his way eastward for a wedding and has little time to add His charming embellishments to this recap. So for those of you who hate sophomoric humor, you are in luck. The most unvarnished recap follows below.

Worn-up Round

1. Delmarva is a peninsula shared by ___ U.S. states: THREE.
2. May 17 – 28, 2017, marks the 70th anniversary of the ___ Film Festival. CANNES
3. Charley Hoffman is a major player in this sport: GOLF.
4. King Cobra, Gray Langur, and Gaur are animals native to: INDIA.
5. On what fictional ship does Long John Silver lead a mutiny? HISPANIOLA.
6. In geology, permafrost is a type of: SOIL.
7. In 1977, he became the first U.S. Secretary of Energy: JOHN SCHLESINGER.
8. Mead Johnson is a major manufacturer of: INFANT FORMULA.
9. The Godstack ship, an 1880 discovery, is a ___ ship found in a Norwegian burial mound. VIKING
10. ‘Grub Street Hack’ is a term that would describe a type of: WRITER.
{The team got all but WU# 3 and WU#8 for the full pull. The first one caused a 2-way split with tennis. The latter of the two was a total miss, as we went for pharma.}

Ground-down Round

1. Geert Wilders is a controversial ___ politician. DUTCH.
2. Recent science indicates this heavenly body’s icy surface may conceal a vast ocean: PLUTO.
3. Natilie Babbit wrote this 1975 classic of children’s literature: TUCK EVERLASTING.
4. The Mnevis Bull was a sacred deity in ancient: EGYPT.
5. Trichromancy, a human trait, is a type of: COLOR VISION.
6. Which of these is a style of French dance? GALLIARD.
7. Filo dough is used to make this dessert: BAKLAVA.
8. Abdullah II is currently the king of: JORDAN.
9. Which state is named after a Native American tribe: IOWA.
10. Brabantian and Limburgish are dialects of: DUTCH.
11. Which word would best define ‘presage’? FORESHADOWING.
12. An extremely important historic event took place here on September 14, 1814: FORT MCHENRY.
{Wonder of wonders, the team got 11 of 12 for the maximum, but resorted to the dreaded 5-way split on GD# 3. Chalk that one up to the lack of people with parenting experience.}

Scatology Round*
*The Buzzies screwed up and put the category titles from last week’s game into this week’s game. Since these were available online prior to tonight’s contest, BLZBUB is able to use the appropriate titles for the choices of categories.

S1. WRITERS v U.S. Cities
Amos Oz is considered by many to be this country’s premier writer: ISRAEL. {SCOOTR made this good call.}

S2. Canadian Coins v LET’S DANCE
This Sevillian Gypsy style of dance is characterized by its fancy heel work: FLAMENCO. {CROEM called this with a flourish.}

S3. WORLD LEADERS v martial arts
Mahmoud Abbas became President of the ___ in 2005. STATE OF PALESTINE. {Greek chorus}

S4. LET’S DANCE v writers
This traditional round dance originated in the Balkans: HORA. {We were off dancing around a May pole, and needed the third clue save here.}

S5. MARTIAL ARTS v Canadian coins
What is ‘Grand Ultimate Boxing’ more popularly known as? TAI CHI CHUAN. {DRAT! Another third clue save was required here.}

S6. U.S. CITIES v world leaders
Which of these U.S. cities has the largest population? SEATTLE. {SCOOTR with the easy call. Four of six was alright, but we wanted more on S4 and S5.}

Frightening Round

1. Which dog breed was originally trained as a guard dog? DOBERMAN
2. Filmmaker Danny Boyle is responsible for such films as ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and: TRAINSPOTTING.
3. Which country is currently suffering from severe hyperinflation? VENEZUELA
4. Which tart fruit comes in black, red, and white varieties? CURRANT
5. Which member of the Royal Family has retired from public duties? PRINCE PHILIP.
6. Astrakhan is a ___ city not far from the Caspian Sea. RUSSIAN
7. ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ was a huge hit in 1967 for: FRANKIE VALLI
{The team flubbed #6 horribly. The rest were ‘easy.’}

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. In Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It,’ Jacques delivers a speech that begins with these words:
A: ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE. {DUFF was first to enunciate this.}

P2. He is known as the ‘Apostle of Cuban Independence.’
Choices: Zapata, Bolivar, Alexis Arguello, Che Guevara, Jose Marti
A: JOSE MARTI. {SCOOTR made the call.}

P3. The ‘Ghent Altarpiece’ is a famous work of art painted in the 15th Century by:
Choices: Titian, Jan Van Eyck, Peter Paul Ruebens, William Hogarth, Anthony Van Dyck
A: JAN VAN EYCK. {DUFF and SCOOTR collaborated to get this one for us.}

P4. St. Pierre and Miquelon, an overseas collectivity of France, are islands off the coast of:
Choices: India, Haiti, Reunion, French Guiana, Canada
A: CANADA. {BLZBUB correctly called Newfoundland, but the Buzzies went general instead of specific.}

P5. Frenchman Charles Plumier named a genus of flowers after this man:
Choices: Michel Begon, Thierry Henry, Joel Poinsett, Donald Zinn, Jean Cassia
A: MICHEL BEGON. {The team couldn’t decide, and only one box smelled the begonias. That last question was a stinker!}

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: AMERICAN NOVELS(?)…Again the Buzzheads used last week’s topic (20th Century History) instead of the proper Topic. BLZBUB can only hint at what it was supposed to be.

Which literary character was created by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.?

1. Sam Croft
2. Dwayne Hoover
3. Zooey Glass
4. Pig Bodine
5. Harry Angstrom

The order of the eliminations was 5, 3, 4, and 1, leaving #2, DWAYNE HOOVER, as the correct answer. The team did not do a good job on this question, as most of the names were unfamiliar to us. Most everybody went with their gut, until all but two answers had been eliminated. At that point there was a fairly even split between the last two candidates. A lot of the players who entered this question ranked in the top six dropped out of the top six, because of this question. The final individual scores in the top six were not horrific, but the team has come to expect more.

The top individual scores for the night were 49494, 46540, 42484, 42191, 39453, and 38737 points
The team average score was 43,149 points.
The team’s ranking was TWENTY-SECOND Place. Meh.

A hale and hearty congratulation goes out to the group at the BWW NEW ORLEANS with their score of 53,704. They barely nipped Teaser’s of Chicago with their 53,349. The next two finishers were the seldom-seen team from Broadway in Nepean, ON @ 52229 and Chaser’s of Oshawa, ON @ 51331. Kudos also to our friends at Danny K’s, finishing fifth with 51025 points.

Unless I'm mistaken, this will fill in all the [s]category questions, from just 3 people.

S1. writers vs. US CITIES.
This Virginia city is known for its large naval base. NORFOLK

S2. CANADIAN COINS vs. let's dance
A caribou is on the reverse side of the Canadian QUARTER.

S4. let's dance vs. WRITERS
Edgar Allen Poe, associated with Baltimore, was born in BOSTON.

(I am so glad I printed out the category matchups to take with me!)

Congrats must go to Teasers, which (probably because BWW-New Orleans had at least one unregistered board) claimed not only the #1 spot in the HOF, but also the most wins so far in 2017!
