Showdown Recap for 24 Apr 2018 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The team was severely depleted this week. There were only nine people in the house for the start of the game known as Showdown, but BLZBUB thinks of as SHUTDOWN, for what frequently happens to our minds on literature questions. Furthermore, the team could only scrounge up 12 boxes for this game.

Worn-up Round

1. This Scottish bard has a cocktail named after him: ROBERT BURNS.
2. Groundhog Day is based on a superstition that comes from this North American group: PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH. {Missed it, prompting BLZBUB to say, “Well we can quit and go home, because there’s no chance of a perfect game anymore.”}
3. ___ horses are bred to carry heavy loads. DRAFT.
4. You could see Germany’s legendary Lorelei if you are travelling: ON THE RHINE RIVER.
5. The trans-Pecos is a portion of this U.S. state: TEXAS. {Home of Judge Roy Bean, law west of the Pecos.}
6. Potation is the act of: DRINKING
7. In military history, ‘Jeb’ Stuart was known as a cavalryman who fought notably under: ROBERT E. LEE.
8. A heated rivalry between two magicians is the focus of this 2006 movie: THE PRESTIGE.
9. Dalton’s, Rutherford’s, and Thompson’s are all famous models of the: ATOM.
10. Which Las Vegas mogul revitalized the Golden Nugget and built the Mirage and the Bellagio? STEVE WYNN.

Well nine of ten correct is a pretty good start.

Ground-down Round

1. ‘What a piece of work is a man’ is a familiar line spoken by what character? HAMLET.
2. The Qing dynasty was begun in the 17th Century by the: MANCHURIANS.
3. The northern terminus of the Intracoastal Waterway is in: BOSTON. {Arg!}
4. ‘Witches Sabbath’ is a painting completed in 1798 by: FRANCISCO GOYA.
5. Where is the famed Slane Castle located? IRELAND.
6. The bark of the willow tree was once used as a precursor to: ASPIRIN.
7. Which of these is something you would sing? CANZONET.
8. Which legendary figure fought in the Hundred Year’s War? JOAN OF ARC.
9. A geology student should know that petalite is an ore of: LITHIUM.
10. Ceres is the Roman equivalent of this Greek goddess: DEMETER.
11. ‘The ___ of Lammermoor’ is a 19th Century novel by Sir Walter Scott. BRIDE.
12. Kola Nuts come from a genus of trees native to this part of the world: AFRICA.

The team had its usual problems with this round. There were splits and third-clue saves of GD’s 3, 7, 9, 11, and 12. Fortunately 7 of 12 correct sounds better than 5 of 12 incorrect.

Scatology Round

S1. NAME THAT SCIENCE v French cuisine
Wormholes and wormhole theory belong to this Science: PHYSICS. {BLZBUB and DUFF were pre-calling synonyms like Astrophysics.}

S2. WRITERS v Disneyland rides
Paula Wolfert, Marcella Hazan, and Richard Olney all gained fame as noted ___ writers. FOOD. {Well this query was no E Ticket attraction. Saved by clue 3.}

S3. ANAGRAMS v German leaders
‘A famous German waltz god’ is an anagram of: WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART. {BRICK got this.}

S4. Disneyland rides v NAME THAT SCIENCE
In which branch of science is ‘CRISPR’ an important tool? GENETICS. {Again the team offered pre-calls of synonyms, lead primarily by CROEM and HEBEGB.}

S5. GERMAN LEADERS v writers
Who did Adolf Hitler lose to in the election for German President in 1932? PAUL VON HINDENBURG. {DUFF pre-called this answer.}

S6. “It’s urine’s equal” is an anagram of: TEQUILA SUNRISE. {HEBEGB was first to this.}

Five for six is a good result for this round. The team used the 5-way split and third-clue save on #2.

Frightening Round

1. Something described as iniquitous would be: WICKED. {As this is the third week in a row where something like “wicked” was an answer, BLZBUB is beginning to think the BUZZHEADS are trying to curry favor with him}
2. Apotex, the generic drug giant, is a ___ company. CANADIAN. {Oof!}
3. The classic version of ‘Minecraft’ was first released to the public in: 2009. {Rats!}
4. ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’ is an acclaimed ___ by Bela Bartok. OPERA.
5. Which country dominated the 2018 Winter Olympics by winning 39 medals? NORWAY.
6. For which movie did Viola Davis win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress? FENCES.
7. Exactly how many internal angles does a simple hexagon have? SIX.
Well blowing L2 and L3 kind of sucked, but the team managed to get five for seven correct.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Rama’s Bridge, also known as Adam’s Bridge, once connected ___ to ___.
Choices: Taiwan – Mainland China: Madagascar – Africa; Italy – Sicily; Turkey – Greece; India – Sri Lanka
A: INDIA – SRI LANKA {HEBEGB & CROEM bridged us from confused to correct.}

P2. This bird with a large beak nests in colonies on coastal cliffs:
Choices: Grackle, Junco, Puffin, Ibis, Albatross
A: PUFFIN. {BLZBUB pre-called (suggested it could be) the Puffin.}

P3. The Toyota War of 1987 was fought between these two countries:
Choices: Honduras and Belize; Bolivia and Paraguay; Fiji and Vanuatu; Cambodia and Thailand; Chad and Libya
A: CHAD AND LIBYA. {HEBEGB called for Chad/Libya, but the moderator did not make it the go-to answer.}

P4. It is named after a Papal county seat near Rome, Italy:
Choices: Apricot, Cantaloupe, Nectarine, Pomegranate, Fennel
A: CANTALOUPE. {Starting with a 5-way split, the team got few on this answer.}

P5. This grayish-white metal is an excellent semiconductor:
Choices: Polonium, Neon, Germanium, Francium, Argon
A: GERMANIUM. {This time BLZBUB definitely called “germanium or silicon” before the five choices appeared.}

The team had a good deal of success with the guesses in this round. Seven of the 12 boxes in play finished with 4 of 5 correct.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: LITERARY CHARACTERS

Which literary character takes a trip to Africa in a hot air balloon?

1. Pippi Longstocking
2. Otto Lidenbrock
3. Dorian Gray
4. Huckleberry Finn
5. Percy Blakeney

The order of the eliminations was 3, 2, 1, and 5, leaving #4, HUCKLEBERRY FINN as the correct answer. This question is proof positive that we should stick to our 5-way splits and not call out, “it can’t be number X,” when nobody can pre-call or deduce the answer immediately.

The top individual scores for the night were 16191, 16089, 15957, 15639, 15476, and 15253 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 15,767 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was 55TH Place.

The Top Score tonight was by West Park Station, in Cleveland @ 45,258 points.
Second -> Danny K’s of Orange, CA @ 43,242
Third -> BWW Arlington @ 43039 points
Other notable Badbart locations include: The Fellowship @ 31328; Houlihan’s Westbury @ 22411; and Stained Glass Pub of Elkridge, MD @ 20893.

As you can see, the Final Tragedy question took its toll on numerous locations’ scores. Better luck/skill next week friends.

So, in 2012 I am working on a project in Toronto in the Jane & Finch neighborhood, and on the drive from my hotel to the plant I would pass, in no particular order:
4 Tim Horton's
2 Massage Parlors
Multiple giant generic looking buildings for some company I have never heard of and never bothered to look up.

The company? Apotex. I've never been so excited to know the answer to question #2 in the Lightning Round :D

The founder and his wife were found hung in their mansion last December. It has been ruled a double homicide.
