Kudos to the NTN monkeys for crafting a difficult to borg final question tonight. Paraphrased: Who was a 10th Century mathematician, poet, astronomer, philosopher, etc.?

Last week, the cheating bastards took positions 1-5. Unless the results tomorrow look differently, 3rd was the best they could do tonight.

agree that it was a good game with a trickily worded final question. I remembered the Rubáiyát which gave me poet so I went with it.

Okay, the results are posted now so I can crow about the game. The Home Turf Bar in Portland that won Showdown the past four weeks running finished a dismal 87th last night. Apparently they couldn't find a effective search argument to get at Klayyam quickly enough.

A loaf of bread,
a jug of wine,
A playmaker beside me,
And In The Zone is paradise enow.

With the understanding that I'm not trying to defend Home Turf (which I've visited only a few times, none during Showdown), there just might be another reason for their lower finish last night. IIRC their regional Showdown Traveling Trophy tournament ended last week (as did the few others ) , and it's been my understanding that Home Turf uses only during those times.

Yes, good FS question. But I would call BT out on some sloppy wording in the first Pyramid Round question, which asked for the "island" outside Japan on which Japanese is a recognized language. Borneo, Australia and Taiwan were the only islands out of the five possible answers. The correct answer they were looking for was Palau, which is a nation made up of islands, none of which is called Palau. It's like calling Indonesia or the Philippines an island. Not accurate.

"Island nation" would have done the trick.

It gets better: According to Wikipedia, Japanese is only an official language in the state of Anguar, an island of Palau that is 3 sq. mi. and had a population of 188 in 2002. Otherwise, the official languages of Palau are English and Palauan.

1-5? You mean Puyallup, too?

That would mean a wetware win for us, if so, so, if so, yay! And thanks for the uptotheminute borg info.

And congrats on last night. We were breathing down your neck, from 206 spots away.
