Gotta love it when all 7 borgs in the top 10 last week bit the dust this week on a basic geography question.

Anybody got the Nobel Peace Prize and Languages questions?

Maybe they all decided to play honestly for once?

Languages were easy. The second one was about where xoishan (sp?) was spoken. Southern Africa.

And maybe I don't drink Dr. Pepper any more.

That language question has been used in SD probably 3-4 times that I know of. Thanks.

Nobel Prizes were slam dunks:

1. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, president of ____, was a winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prze
2. Tawakkul Karman of _____ shared the 2011 NPP

Languages:

1. Which language is part of the North Caucasian group? (the answer was CHECHEN, others were geographically unlikely)
2. Khoisan is a group of languages found in this part of the world

We were enjoying that immensely. Kudos to the Showdown content staff for making it tougher to Google the final question.

I typed out all of the answers, but now see that a couple people beat me to the punch. Anyone have the film composers or the second theater actors question? We choked on the first actors question and shied away from the category the second time.

The second one was something like Who played Nixon and Dracula on Broadway? And the answer, as you probably know, was Frank Langella. How did you come up with the "Monster" answer for the not-quite-science Showdown question?

Thanks!

We didn't, really. We eliminated a couple and then split among the rest. I'm kind of embarrassed about it, actually, because I probably should have known it. I've read about the "hopeful monster" hypothesis, but the name Goldschmidt didn't ring any bells. I must be getting old.

Although I think that Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is the name she normally uses, we saw it as Ellen Sirleaf Johnson in the question. Not likely to confuse anyone, but it did cause us a tiny hesitation or double take.

I would consider it to be a fairly easy question to look up on the web--just go to Google Maps and type in Slovakia, and you can see which countries border it.

That said, I also thought that one of the bluffs was particularly good. While it is easy to remember that Slovakia borders Poland--it's a fairly long border--I also thought that Slovakia had a border with Belarus. When both were there, it was easy to go with the "sure" answer of Poland, but it gave me a second's pause.

And, afterward, we did look at Google Maps, and were mildly surprised to see Poland's border with Ukraine--something that had to be if Slovakia doesn't have a border with Belarus.

Almost forgot, what was the deal with that Sherlock Holmes question? One teammate declared they couldn't be Sherlock Holmes books, but as it turns out they were all actually movies. Was the word book said or implied in the question?

I don't remember this. Was it in the category round?

Well, I sure thought it was SD and can't see how it would have been in the category round. Only other game it could have been was CD before the specialty games. I could be losing my mind.

I believe that question was in Speed after Showdown, and think it said: Which of these wasn't a Sherlock Holmes title? Didn't really specify either way.

I am 100% sure it was not in Speed.

Definitely wasn't in BrainBuster, Speed or the post-Speed Countdown. Wasn't in Showdown either unless it was a category round question that we didn't choose, but it doesn't seem to fit any of the categories that were on offer.
