Wherein the little-team-that-could got its shit together and tried not to have a crappy game.

Warm-up Round

1. You would use a duck blind if you were __ ducks: HUNTING. 2. Joltin’ and Smokin’ were two epithets attached to this sports figure: JOE FRAZIER. 3. Which animal listed is a giraffid? OKAPI. 4. Figuratively, a logjam is a: DEADLOCK. 5. The 2005 YU55 is a/an __ that came close to Earth on Nov 8, 2011: ASTEROID. 6. The “grigio” in the pinot grigio grape refers to its: COLOR. 7. Sativa, indica and ruderalis are the three species of this plant: CANNABIS. 10. This term refers to a type of silk that has a rippled appearance: MOIRE.

Rumor has it that the BUZZIES are trying to develop the “Brown Question,” where all of the teams playing shit their pants simultaneously as they see the answer to the question revealed.

Ground-down Round:

1. Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegan founded this record label: ATLANTIC. 2. Which famous person was a contemporary of King Charles VII of France? JOAN OF ARC. 3. The Nautical Society of __ won the America’s Cup of yachting in 2003 and 2007: GENEVA. 4. Which opera and concert singer is an African-American: JESSYE NORMAN. 12. It has a stipe, a pileus and gills: MUSHROOM.

We soiled ourselves of Q’s 1, 7, 9, and 10, but splitting drawers 5-ways on those salvaged points.

BLZBUB heard a news radio report that forensic scientists have discovered that every person has enough uniqueness in their gut bacteria to provide a bacteriological fingerprint from their poop. Of course long-time trivia players will immediately realize that cops have been catching criminals for years with the aid of “stoolies.”

Scatocology Round:

1. WORLD ORGANIZATIONS v marine life
The IUCN is an org. known for its “Red List” of: ENDANGERED SPECIES. {Int’l Union for Conservation of Nature just doesn’t have the same ring as “U.N.C.L.E.”, now, does it?}

2. Boxing currents v BIG BUSINESS
Which company purchased Evolution Fresh, a fruit juice company: STARBUCKS {Or St. Arbuck’s if you are a practicing java worshipper.}

3. Geology v U.S. HISTORY
Lord Dunmore’s War was between the Mingo and Shawnee nations and this colony: VIRGINIA {Yes Virginia, there is a Shawnee Claus.}

4. BIG BIZ v world orgs.
After 18 years of trying __, has been accepted into the World Trade Organization. RUSSIA {OK, so if this was the BIG BIZ query, what was the World Orgs. Q???}

5. U.S. HISTORY v boxing currents
The 1778 Battle of Wyoming took place in a valley of this state: PENNSYLVANIA {CHILL was supposedly an eye witness, but he won’t say which side he took.}

6. Marine life v GEOLOGY
G. Brent Dalrymple wrote this classic: THE AGE OF THE EARTH {We calculate that it is only about twice as old as CHILL.}

We did OK on that round, although DUFF accused some of us of being anal retentive. Shoot, BLZBUB knew he was anal-retentive the first night he lay awake wondering if “anal retentive” is a hyphenated word.

Frightening Round:

1. Kona coffee is the market name for coffee grown here: HAWAII. 2. Which fabric is composed of twisted, parallel fibers? CORDUROY. 3. As a verb, to cashier means to: DISMISS FROM SERVICE. 4. Tripe is made from the __ of various farm animals: STOMACHS. 5. A fillip is a/an: HAND GESTURE. 6. The notorious Viktor Bout was recently convicted of this crime: ARMS SMUGGLING. 7. A Spitz is a type of: DOG.

Fortunately, the team laid no steaming loads of poop on that round.

Py-ram-it Round:

P1. “The Life and Death of Mr. Badman” and “Grace Abounding” are works by this Baptist writer:
JOHN BUNYAN. {A crappy 5-way split here.}

P2. The AUC, FARC, and ELN are terrorist groups operating out of: COLOMBIA {BLZBUB and CROEM teamed up to interdict the FARC.}

P3. This plant belongs to the mint family: LAVENDER {TNT, our Hopi horticulturalist, picked this one clean.}

P4. The influential 1798 “An Essay on the Principle of Population” is by: THOMAS MALTHUS {DUFF with a pre-call here.}

P5. The Phoenix Program was a CIA counterinsurgency agenda conducted during the: VIETNAM WAR {This came from PANCHO and was confirmed by the HEBEGB table.}

Final Tragedy, on the Topic of: OPERA

Both Jules Massenet and Giacomo Puccini wrote operas based on this 18th Century novel:
MANON LESCAUT {Ack, gag. Snort, wheeze.}

We went into the Final Tragedy with six boxes on 5 of 5 correct from Py-ram-it. Some of these were defaulted to #2 as their 5-way splits. Apparently enough people jumped to a guess of #2 once their 5-way assigned answer was eliminated. We finished with lower scores than we could have gotten with a lock on the Final Tragedy question, but salvaged a good grouping.

The team’s top six boxes scored 44967, 44559, 44245, 40731, 40243, and 39891. The team final average was 42,446 points. This was barely good enough for 38th place for the night. After getting mauled of the Final Tragedy, we considered ourselves lucky to hit the Top 50. At least our streak of all-Top 100 finishes for the year is intact.
