We had an unfortunate whiff on Q7, and declared two-way splits on Q3 and Q10.

The term “vascular” refers to: BLOOD VESSELS.

Damnation, it would be easier to say which questions did NOT need a five-way split on this round. We were pretty fast and accurate on Qs 4 and 9-12. We did run the eliminations on Q3 and Q5 fairly rapidly, but the others were saved only by the third clue.

Scatology Round:

1. Art v INTERNET CURRENTS
What file-sharing website was shut down by the F.B.I. last month? MEGAUPLOAD. {Precise call by HEBEGB.}

2. BIOLOGY v pop singers

3. GEOGRAPHY v buildings

In the first positive sign of the night, we managed to answer all seven of these.

Py-ram-it Round:

P1. In reference to gases, ___ means having greater pressure or weight.
HYPERBARIC {Good call by DUFF and BLLNST. Hmm, how would a Balloonist know that? Heh heh heh.}

P2. Morton Lauridsen is a highly regarded composer who is primarily known for his:
CHORAL MUSIC. {Alas, a five tone scale produced dis-chord on this one. There was no chorus of correct answers.}

P3. Given since 1943, the Lasker Awards are among the world’s most respected __ prizes:
SCIENCE {Dr. Science, where were you when we needed you?}

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Lasker_Award

Also see the 2011 award winners for some insight into the flubbed “artemisinin” query.

P4. In Aesop’s fable, “The Lion and the Mouse,” the lion is freed when the mouse: GNAWS THROUGH ROPES {BLLNST correctly de-thorning others’ missed calls.}

P5. Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid component used as a/an:
ABORTIFACIENT {Although it is used in the RU-486 “abortion pill,” it apparently works on memories in Albuquerque as well.}

FINAL TRAGEDY, on the topic of: GREEK MYTHOLOGY

This figure of Greek mythology is punished by being eternally bound to a fiery wheel.
IXION
{DUFF, with a call of Delphic ambiguity, was of little help here. Good enough, though, for most of us. We were able to quickly eliminate Sisyphus, Atlas and Daedalus. We were also lucky that Epimetheus was the second choice eliminated.}

We would consider ourselves truly lucky if we held onto a spot in the Top 50 for that game. Our top six boxes scored 42345, 39099, 38442, 37304, 36476 and 36181 points, due mainly to our 5-way split strategy. The team’s average was a miserable 38,307 points. When the game’s rankings finally came up, we were relieved to see ourselves in 33rd place.

Judging by some of the other scores, this game was not particularly difficult for many teams. It drove us bonkers, however. Congrats to The Fellowship on their win. Unfortunately, it looks like the Borg had a field day, based on the rest of the Top 10. So kudos to Varsity Grill, Danny K’s and Jilly’s for leading the kiddie page.
