This week the team consisted of eleven players, manhandling 17 boxes. It was to be a very good game, with minor exceptions.

Now, in the interest of mental health preservation, there will be no theme this week, so it’s directly on to the…

Worn-up Round

1. The string of narrow islands and peninsulas off the North Carolina coast is called the: OUTER BANKS.
2. Which type of creatures are chiggers? ARACHNIDS.
3. ‘Fear of Dying’ is a 2015 novel from this controversial author: ERICA JONG.
4. A road called the Tamiami Trail crosses the: EVERGLADES.
5. Which event in U.S. history took place on January 24, 1848? GOLD FOUND IN CALIFORNIA.
6. ‘Shall We Dance’ is a musical number from: THE KING AND I.
7. Captain Kirk, Popeye, and Snowman are slang terms in this sport: GOLF.
8. ‘CGI’ is a common initialism that stands for ___ Generated Imagery: COMPUTER.
9. This artist’s Formation World Tour began last month: BEYONCE.
10. An ingot is a piece of material, usually: METAL.

{The team ran the boards for this round with pre-calls on eight of the ten questions. The exceptions were on WU 5 and 7, which were dispatched with ease.}

Ground-down Round

1. Where would one most likely find the Loop of Henle? IN THEIR BODY.
2. Gal Godot (sic) has been in the news lately thanks to her job as: MOVIE ACTRESS. {Sorry Buzzie, its ‘Gadot.’}
3. In the mid-19th Century, Urbain Le Verrier posited the existence of a planet he named: VULCAN.
4. In U.S. Japanese sushi restaurants ‘Omakase’ means: THE CHEF SELECTS.
5. The razorbill is the closest living relative to this extinct creature: GREAT AUK.
6. The island of Cape Breton contains four of the eighteen counties of this Canadian province: NOVA SCOTIA.
7. In what year did the infamous Attica prison riot take place? 1971.
8. ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’ is an Edgar Allan Poe short story set during the: SPANISH INQUISITION.
9. “Hello Showdown players. My name is Mauricio Macri and I am the ___” PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA.
10. What exactly is ‘Dynel’? SYNTHETIC FIBER.
11. The Ladies in White is an opposition movement founded in this country in 2003: CUBA.
12. In legal terms, if a defendant is remanded, he or she is: SENT BACK TO A FACILITY.

We were beginning to feel like a major league pitcher working on a shut-out. Eleven of these twelve were retired without wasting pitches. The exception was on GD 11, where the Buzzies got a base hit off of us.

Scatology Round

S1. World business v SUNKEN SHIPS
This ship was loaded with over 29.000 pounds of taconite pellets when it found a watery grave: EDMUND FITZGERALD. {BLZBUB light-footed the team over here.}

S2. Debonair actors v JOAN OF ARC
Joan of Arc was a heroine in this war: HUNDRED YEARS’ WAR. {DUFF was there fastest.}

S3. Filipino food v U.S. PRESIDENTS
Which U.S. President retired to his farm in Gettysburg? DWIGHT EISENHOWER. {DUFF, again.}

S4. JOAN OF ARC v world business
Joan of Arc said this Saint spoke to her first: MICHAEL. {HEBEGB and SCOOTR fought for this answer, correctly.}

S5. U.S. PRESIDENTS v debonair actors
In 1892, Benjamin Harrison became the first President to attend a: BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL GAME. {DUFF hit this one outta the park.}

S6. SUNKEN SHIPS v Filipino food
This luxury liner was destroyed by fire in Hong Kong harbor in 1972: QUEEN ELIZABETH. {DUFF was in love with Liz.}

The team was in the zone by now, retiring all six stumpers efficiently.

Frightening Round

1. Who currently serves as U.S. Secretary of Defense: ASH CARTER.
2. The new film ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ is a sequel to this comedy of the 1990’s: DAZED AND CONFUSED.
3. In what year was Pope John Paul II, the first Polish Pope, born? 1920.
4. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are the: POWERPUFF GIRLS.
5. Flooding of Biblical proportions struck this city last month: HOUSTON.
6. Pandora is a music streaming service available only in the U.S., Australia and: NEW ZEALAND.
7. Jon Snow, Cersei, Sansa, and Arya are characters on this hit TV show: GAME OF THRONES.

The majority of the team was correct on all seven of these queries. There was some confusion whether the possible answer to F6 was South Africa.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. ‘Ode to the ___’ is a famous literary work by Percy Bysshe Shelley:
WEST WIND. {DUFF could probably recite swaths of this poem if we let him…we didn’t. The answer was sufficient.}

P2. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was one of the first to use this term in its modern sense:
BIOLOGY. {JAX and DUFF get the credit here.}

P3. “Tryst with Destiny” is a famous speech delivered by ___ on August 15, 1947.
JAWAHARLAL NEHRU. {We eliminated Wm. Jennings Bryan and Juan Peron, but could not positively rule out Churchill or Stalin.}

P4. Makassar is the largest city on this Indonesian island:
SULAWESI. {By process of elimination we ruled out East Timor, Mindanao, Kiribati, and New Caledonia to lock in on Sulawesi.}

P5. “Portrait of Dr. Gachet” is one of many impressionist paintings by:
VINCENT VAN GOGH. {DUFF managed to scrape this one off his palette in time.}

As can be observed from the above commentary, the only fault with the team arose on P3. This left the team with four boxes on 5 for 5 correct, while the remainder of the team went 4 for 5 correct.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: MOTHERS

Jeanette Jerome, born in Brooklyn in 1854, became the mother of this celebrated man:

1. Winston Churchill
2. P.T. Barnum
3. Charlie Chaplin
4. Harry Houdini
5. John F. Kennedy

The order of the eliminations was 2, 5, 3, and 4, leaving #1, WINSTON CHURCHILL, as the correct answer. History-boy, DUFF, pre-called this answer before the appearance of the five choices. Since the team went into this round with those four boxes on five for five from Pyramid, we got huge scores there. The last two of our six for the team average were mid-50’s.

The top six boxes read 61987, 61983, 60708, 60303, 55053, and 54660 points. The team score was 59,115 points. Alas, we suspected that the loss of point on pyramid would hurt us, and it did. The team finished in FOURTH Place for the night. Not bad for a little team in the hinterlands of this great nation.

Congrats go out to BWW Westbury with 60,958 for #1; The Fellowship with 59,191 at 2nd; followed by BWW Bloomingdale fir 3rd with 59,143. Our 4th place score of 59,115 narrowly edged out the Concert Pub @ 5th with 58,773 points.

No wonder we came in third on Tuesday! For us, it was a repeat game from 5 weeks ago. So we were very surprised the scores weren't higher.

Not sure how that happens.
