The team has moved into the knockout round of the Sandbagger Tournament. This was apparently important enough for all of our most important team members to make it down to the BWW on Gibson Blvd in time for Showdown. Expectations for a good game were high, starting with the…

Worn-up Round

1. In what state did the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates take place in 1858? ILLINOIS
2. The hornbill is a type of tropical: BIRD
3. In ancient Scandinavian societies, a thrall was a: SLAVE.
4. Which countries track and field team was barred from competing in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games? RUSSIA.
5. The word ‘fetch’ has many meanings, one of which is: TO SELL FOR.
6. Known around the world for its beauty, Havasu Falls is located in: ARIZONA.
7. It is one of the two most common clefs on a musical scale: G.
8. Which of these is created by the lithification of mud? SHALE.
9. The hat known as the toque is popularly called a: KNIT CAP.
10. In geography, this is a purely cartographic feature: EQUATOR.

The team was off to a fast start on this round. The only question to slow us down was #8, where we couldn’t remember the association between the ‘G’ and the treble clef.

Ground-down Round

1. You would find a chuppah at a ___ wedding: JEWISH.
2. Born in 1885, his novels include ‘Ann Vickers,’ ‘Kingsblood Royal,’ and ‘Mantrap’: SINCLAIR LEWIS.
3. Where would you most likely see a chyron? TV SCREEN.
4. In Hippocratic medicine, blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm are the four: HUMORS.
5. A pitifully meek or stupid person would best be described as a: SCHNOOK.
6. In U.S. business, a start-up firm valued at one billion dollars or more is called a: UNICORN.
7. Frappato di Vittoria is the name of an Italian: WINE GRAPE.
8. The Phi Betta (sic) ___ Society was founded in1776 at the College of William and Mary: KAPPA.
9. Chermoula is a marinade widely used in ___ cooking: NORTH AFRICAN.
10. Which head of state was removed from office in August of 2016? DILMA ROUSSEFF
11. What dark liqueur is added to make a Tequila Sunset? BLACKBERRY BRANDY.
12. Oregon’s Crater Lake is the ___ lake in the United States. DEEPEST.

This was a pretty good round with 8 of 12 immediately answered correct. It was GDs 2, 7, 9, and 11 which forced splits.

Scatology Round

S1. Up a Lazy River v FAMOUS FEMALES
Emmeline Pankhurst was a noted British: POLITICAL ACTIVIST. {DUFF}

S2. VACATION IN MOSCOW v Film scores
Moscow’s famous ___ Park opened in 1928. GORKY. {BLZBUB leads the Greek chorus.}

S3. Astronomy v VOCABULARY
To nettle someone is to ___them: ANNOY. {DUFF & more Greek chorus.}

S4. FILM SCORES v up a lazy river
‘Paris Blues,’ ‘Anatomy of a Murder,’ and Change of Mind’ are films with music scores by: DUKE ELLINGTON.

S5. Vocabulary v VACATION IN MOSCOW
Moscow’s landmark ___ bell tower rises to 266 feet above the Kremlin: IVAN THE GREAT.

S6. FAMOUS FAMILIES v astronomy
In 2009, Dalia Grybauskaite became the first woman President of: LITHUANIA.

This round was way below par for our group. Although the first three did not trouble us, we had brain lapses on the final three. Fortunately there was only a small delay in getting to the correct answer for S6, but S4 and S5 could only be called by third clue saves.

Frightening Round

1. ‘Montage of Heck’ is the subtitle of a controversial new film documentary about: KURT COBAIN.
2. The Concorde, the first supersonic jetliner, took its first test flight in: 1969.
3. Bert Sperling’s famous publication is ‘___ Ranked and Rated.’ CITIES.

5. Which of these creatures is a fish? PORBEAGLE.
6. Oodle, Pawngo, Adoos, and Hoobly are rivals of: CRAIGSLIST.
7. Nathan Detroit is a central character in this musical play: GUYS AND DOLLS.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. What person coined the word ‘cell’ for describing biological organisms?
ROBERT HOOKE. {DUFF pre-called this answer.}

P2. The Alhambra Decree of 1492 ordered the expulsion of ___ from Aragon and Castile: JEWS. {Another pre-call by DUFF.}

P3. Theodore Rousseau and Jean-Francois Millet are associated with the ___ art movement: BARBIZON SCHOOL. {DUFF and MEERA confirmed.}

P4. The Straits of Tiran separate the Gulf of Aqaba from the ___ Sea:
RED. {HEBEGB pulled this one out for us.}

P5. This dramatic term was first used by the Greek philosopher Aristotle:
CATHARSIS. {DUFF completes the sole hat trick with this answer.}

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: 19TH CENTURY NOVELS

First published in 1851, this book contains a total of 135 chapters:

1. The Pearl
2. Moby Dick
3. A Tale of Two Cities
4. The Scarlet Letter
5. The Bostonians

The order of the eliminations was 5, 3, 4, and 1, leaving #2, MOBY DICK, as the correct answer. Based on the year alone DUFF pre-called Moby Dick. Then the five choices appeared as did sweat on his brow as he worried over The Scarlet Letter.

The top individual scores for the night were 56889, 56164, 56140, 55761, 55609, and 55467 points.
The team average score was 56,005 points. That total left us hopeful for a high ranking.
The team’s ranking was FIFTH Place.

The usual suspects grabbed the top of the leader boards, Congratulations go out once again to The Fellowship with a 1st place score of 59,634. The next three locations were Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale @ 59030, Houlihans of Westbury @ 56956, and BWW Kalamazoo @ 56,049.

Whilst this lil old grump is unaware of any strange alignment of planets that may have occurred this past Tuesday :shock:, the likelihood of me and the last remaining fellow player of what was once a decently competitive Showdown team in Buzztime's Site-Poor Backyard picking all six alternate questions is probably slim to none. :( And, since BLZBUB seemed to forget :o, one of the alternate choices for Ground-Down Round Q5 just had to be my lil infamous handle - which made this lil old grump consider paying an unannounced visit to Buzztime's offices. :lol:

No question, Joel, your divergence from the Ragged Rascals in the Scattergories Round was statistically weird, and the likelihood of mutual success was vanishing slight. With 20/20 hindsight I liked your selections better. At the Tailgate, we went with the Rascals 4/6, and got burned once (by Duke Ellington).

Running the last seven questions of the quiz, we popped, like a ripe zit, onto the first page. Fond as I am of repeating myself, this quiz is not for the squeamish.
