Showdown Recap for 29 Nov 2016 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The RAGGED RASCALS put out an all-hands-on-deck call for players for this week’s game. The team was hoping for an epic Showdown with Danny K’s of Orange, CA. The response was gratifying. A pumped up 18 players made the trek and were seated and ready to play.

Worn-up Round

1. Passeriformes is an order that makes up more than half of all ___ species: BIRD.
2. Deepwater Horizon was in the headlines in 2010. What was it: OFFSHORE DRILLING RIG.
3. Bottles of bock beer often have the picture of a ___ on the label: GOAT.
4. Speaking of goats, The ‘GOAT’ debate usually takes place in this field: SPORTS.
5. It’s a small piece of cloth that is used as a sample: SWATCH.
6. The fifth of the Ten Commandments says to honor thy: FATHER.
7. ‘Riki-Tiki-Tavi” is a short story written by: RUDYARD KIPLING.
8. Which word would best describe a meddlesome person: OFFICIOUS.
9. Which of these is a region of Spain? ANDALUSIA.
10. The Stanford Axe is given to the team the winner of the annual football game between Stanford and: CALIFORNIA.

The team went through this round unscathed by the BUZZHEADS. HUZZAH!

Ground-down Round

1. In banking, generating fictitious accounts is called: SANDBAGGING.
2. Most experts say the country of Brazil was named after a: TREE.
3. ‘The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo’ is a ‘femoir’ from this current favorite: AMY SCHUMER.
4. Eugene Victor Debs was a ___ Party candidate for U.S. President five times: SOCIALIST.
5. The planet Neptune has exactly ___ distinct rings: FIVE.
6. He was one of three brothers who signed the Treaty of Verdun in A.D. 843: LOUIS THE GERMAN.
7. Augustus Gloop and Bruce Bogtrotter are characters created by: ROALD DAHL.
8. When Africa separated from the Arabian Peninsula, the ___ was formed: RED SEA.
9. Players of this popular video game series know all about a weapon called an Ashbringer: WORLD OF WARCRAFT.
10. The ___ artichoke is an edible vegetable also called the sunchoke: JERUSALEM.
11. Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ opera is famed for its ___ chorus: WEDDING MARCH.
12. It occupies land once owned by Martha Washington’s grandson, George W. Custis: ARLINGTON CEMETERY.

For this round, the normal pattern of ‘get-one, miss-one’ was decisively broken. The team managed to get 10 of 12 without the help of the third clue. The exceptions were GD’s 1and 5. There were a few questions that drew some specious pre-calls, but the offenders were quickly shouted down.

Scatology Round

S1. World geography v 1960’s LITERATURE
What 1960’s novel was written by James Leo Herlihy? MIDNIGHT COWBOY. {The group used a 2-way split with “American Dream” on this one.}

S2. PHILOSOPHERS v inventors
This philosophical system was developed by Ayn Rand: OBJECTIVISM. {OOH, a touchy political query, if you will; answered by the Greek Chorus.}

S3. Let’s dance v DOG BREEDS
It is one of four breeds of setters: ENGLISH. {KURGAN made the call.}

S4. Inventors v WORLD GEOGRAPHY
Lake Malawi serves as a border between the nations of Malawi and: TANZANIA. {Greek Chorus.}

S5. Dog breeds v PHILOSOPHERS
Which David was a famous skeptical philosopher of the 19TH Century? DAVID HUME.* {We got screwed by Buzzie here.}

S6. Frank O’Hara’s “Lunch Poems” are classic paeans to life in this city: NEW YORK. {3RD clue save.}

*As stated above, the BUZZHEADS screwed us on S5 with yet another bone-headed mistake in writing the question. David Hume’s birth/death years are 1711 to 1776. The perspicacious reader will immediately recognize these as belonging to the 18TH god-damned century! Our chief history guru is somewhat of a savant for his memory of historic dates. For that reason he quite rightly ruled out David Hume as being a correct answer to the question asked.

Of course in typical Buzztime fashion only a couple of the alternate Davids (Ross and Nelson) could be considered philosophers, while the two other Davids (Brinkley and Corcoran) were right out. However BLZBUB would like to point out that when he was teaching at little military school in Colorado Springs for wayward boys and girls, it was obvious when He had written a bad multiple choice question. Whenever He stood before the class to review the results of an exam, if He found Himself explaining the desired answer was “the best among all of the choices,” He knew He’d screwed the pooch in writing the question.

Frightening Round

1. What is the volume of a cube whose edges add up to 48 Inches? 64 CUBIC INCHES.
2. ‘Cosmic Hallelujah’ is the title of a 2016 CD released by this country star. KENNY CHESNY.
3. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade started in this year: 1924.
4. Its cities include Norfolk, Newport News, and Alexandria: VIRGINIA. {Yes Santa, there is a Virginia.}
5. ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is a ___ that debuted this summer. STAGE PLAY.
6. Crackle is an online distributor of web and TV shows that is owned by: SONY
7. Just under ___ percent of Americans lived below the poverty level in 2016: 14.

OK, all of these were fair game for a trivia contest. Unfortunately the team knew nothing about L1 & 2 and had some trouble deciding upon a unique answer for L7.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. ‘The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot’ are words made famous by:
Choices: O. Henry, Patrick Henry, Norman Mailer, Aaron Burr, Thomas Paine.
A: THOMAS PAINE

P2. This National Park, which dates from 1880, consists of a chain of islands:
Choices: Arches, Mesa Verde, Capitol Reef, Gates of the Arctic, Biscayne
A: BISCAYNE.

P3. What did Marguerite Perey discover in 1939?
Choices: Crystal Skull, Indonesian Tribe, Dinosaur Fossil, Chemical Element, Moon of Neptune.
A: CHEMICAL ELEMENT.

P4. Through the character of Bazarov, this Russian novel introduced the world to Nihilism:
Choices: Resurrection, Eugene Onegin, Dead Souls, A Hero of Our Time, Fathers and Sons.
A: FATHERS AND SONS.

P5. Which word was coined by English scientist Richard Owen in 1824?
Choices: Dinosaur, Armageddon, Equator, Molecule, Stratosphere
A: DINOSAUR

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: HUMAN ANATOMY

Typically humans have ___ pairs of cranial nerves:

1. Seven
2. Twelve
3. Five
4. Nine
5. Three

The order of the eliminations was 5, 4, 1, and 3, leaving #2, TWELVE, as the correct answer. This question was answered by a guest player, invited especially for tonight’s game by one of our regulars. The whole team got their full wager of points for this round. This would give us some faint hope that the question would elude our stiffest competition for this night.

The top individual scores for the night were 50515, 47827, 47593, 47338, 46579, and 46411 points.
The team average score was 47,710 points.
The team’s ranking was THIRTEENTH Place, which was far ahead of our crosstown rivals. It would fall seven places below our Sandbagger Tournament foes for the evening. So congratulations go to Danny K’s of Orange, CA for another Sandbagger Trophy.

Noteworthy non-Borg scores were recorded by BWW Kent, OH (The Fellowship) at 59,537 points; BWW Kalamazoo, MI at 53,343; Danny K’s at 53,001; and also CK’s Tavern of Phoenix, AZ at 52,853 points.

Failing to recognize my leadership abilities, my group rejected not once but twice my request for Philosophers in the Pick-Your-Poison Round. The alternatives were of no interest to me, but might have been thus and so (and please note, I'm susceptible to mnemonic invention):

S2: INVENTORS: In 1908, James Murray Spangler invented what handy household device? VACUUM CLEANER (It's a little more complicated.)

S5: DOGS: This breed originated in Croatia: DALMATIAN

Was I offended that my fellow players are not of a philosophical disposition? "Take the money," Thom Yorke advises Radiohead fans on the album, Kid A. "Take the money and run."

Played solo Tuesday, didn't have to worry about anyone outvoting me ;)

S1. WORLD GEOGRAPHY vs 1960's Literature
Yasuni Biosphere Reserve and National Park is found in what country? ECUADOR (Just went there in June!)

S2. INVENTORS vs Philosophers
Born in 1902, Felix Wankel invented a ___________. ROTARY ENGINE

S4. INVENTORS vs World Geography
This man shared the Nobel Prize for his work inventing the transistor. WALTER BRATTAIN

P.S. I don't recall seeing the Spangler/Vacuum Cleaner question on Category Q2 during Showdown and missed most of Brainbusters while the system at Time Out was rebooting. Maybe it was from that game?

We also went inventors on Q2, it was the Wankle question. I don't remember seeing the vacuum cleaner question at any time on Tuesday.

Mea culpa. Apparently I've been playing too many of these quizzes to recall which question came from which quiz. Thanks for the correction.
