Showdown Recap for 29 Nov 2016 at BWW Gibson in ABQ
The RAGGED RASCALS put out an all-hands-on-deck call for players for this week’s game. The team was hoping for an epic Showdown with Danny K’s of Orange, CA. The response was gratifying. A pumped up 18 players made the trek and were seated and ready to play.

Scatology Round
S1. World geography v 1960’s LITERATURE What 1960’s novel was written by James Leo Herlihy? MIDNIGHT COWBOY. {The group used a 2-way split with “American Dream” on this one.}
S2. PHILOSOPHERS v inventors This philosophical system was developed by Ayn Rand: OBJECTIVISM. {OOH, a touchy political query, if you will; answered by the Greek Chorus.}
S3. Let’s dance v DOG BREEDS It is one of four breeds of setters: ENGLISH. {KURGAN made the call.}

S6. Frank O’Hara’s “Lunch Poems” are classic paeans to life in this city: NEW YORK. {3RD clue save.}
*As stated above, the BUZZHEADS screwed us on S5 with yet another bone-headed mistake in writing the question. David Hume’s birth/death years are 1711 to 1776. The perspicacious reader will immediately recognize these as belonging to the 18TH god-damned century! Our chief history guru is somewhat of a savant for his memory of historic dates. For that reason he quite rightly ruled out David Hume as being a correct answer to the question asked.
Of course in typical Buzztime fashion only a couple of the alternate Davids (Ross and Nelson) could be considered philosophers, while the two other Davids (Brinkley and Corcoran) were right out. However BLZBUB would like to point out that when he was teaching at little military school in Colorado Springs for wayward boys and girls, it was obvious when He had written a bad multiple choice question. Whenever He stood before the class to review the results of an exam, if He found Himself explaining the desired answer was “the best among all of the choices,” He knew He’d screwed the pooch in writing the question.
Frightening Round

Its cities include Norfolk, Newport News, and Alexandria: VIRGINIA. {Yes Santa, there is a Virginia.} 5. ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ is a ___ that debuted this summer. STAGE PLAY. 6. Crackle is an online distributor of web and TV shows that is owned by: SONY 7. Just under ___ percent of Americans lived below the poverty level in 2016: 14.
OK, all of these were fair game for a trivia contest. Unfortunately the team knew nothing about L1 & 2 and had some trouble deciding upon a unique answer for L7.

The order of the eliminations was 5, 4, 1, and 3, leaving #2, TWELVE, as the correct answer. This question was answered by a guest player, invited especially for tonight’s game by one of our regulars. The whole team got their full wager of points for this round. This would give us some faint hope that the question would elude our stiffest competition for this night.
The top individual scores for the night were 50515, 47827, 47593, 47338, 46579, and 46411 points. The team average score was 47,710 points. The team’s ranking was THIRTEENTH Place, which was far ahead of our crosstown rivals. It would fall seven places below our Sandbagger Tournament foes for the evening. So congratulations go to Danny K’s of Orange, CA for another Sandbagger Trophy.
Noteworthy non-Borg scores were recorded by BWW Kent, OH (The Fellowship) at 59,537 points; BWW Kalamazoo, MI at 53,343; Danny K’s at 53,001; and also CK’s Tavern of Phoenix, AZ at 52,853 points.
