Showdown Recap for 25 Jul 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

This past weekend’s collection of triviots in Arlington, TX has put BLZBUB in a nostalgic mood. Many old acquaintances were renewed and some new friendships forged. But all of them remind BLZBUB that we, collectively, are a group with a bunch of common interests in need of occasional refreshment.

A large group arrived in time for this week’s edition of Showdown to quench that thirst. Many opted for chilly libations. Others for the softer versions. Thus fortified, the team count ran up to 17 people for tonight’s tilt.

Worn-up Round

1. Which of these is a name for a frightening apparition: HOBGOBLIN.
2. British brothers Gerald and Lawrence Durrell made their mark in the 20TH Century as: WRITERS.
3. In the world of food, the French expression sous-vide refers to a type of: COOKING.
4. Tchotchke is a ___ word for bauble, trinket , or miscellaneous item: YIDDISH.
5. William Levitt is considered the founder of modern American: SUBURBIA.
6. A 2016 Oprah Winfrey book club selection is titled after the: UNDERGROUND RAILROAD.
7. The caravel was a ship developed during and for the: AGE OF DISCOVERY.
8. One of the biggest icebergs on record severed itself from ___ earlier this month. ANTARCTICA.
9. Which of these creatures is a monkey? MANGEBAY
10. Which body of water is an inlet of the Irish Sea? SOLWAY FIRTH.

The team was fortunate enough to have on the participants of the recent Trivia Palooza join us on Tuesday night. Bobby Reeves is slowly wending his way back by car to Orange, CA, but made a pit stop in the ABQ to sit in for SHOWDOWN. He’s been using the Palooza as an excuse to go for a walkabout across the American southlands and had some good stories to share.

Ground-down Round

1. Set was the Egyptian God of: CHAOS.
2. ‘The Moon and Sixpence’ is one of many acclaimed novels by: W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM.
3. Researchers at this company invented nylon in the 1930’s: DUPONT.

5. Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Tlaxcala are states of: MEXICO.
6. Find the herb among the spices: DILL.
7. The 1896 Treaty of Addis Ababa ended the First ___-Ethiopian War. ITALO.
8. Which of these is a term used for a certain size of wine bottle? METHUSELAH, but according to Buzzie, ‘methusaleh’ (sic)
9. A salacious person is one who is: LECHEROUS.
10. Which country’s Parliament awards the Holberg and Abel Prizes: NORWAY.
11. Prime, seconde, tierce, and quarte are four fundamental moves in the sport of: FENCING.
12. Aepyceros Melampus is the scientific name of the: IMPALA.

We were also joined tonight, or should we say re-joined, by James Brickey aka BRICK. He used to play as a regular with us back in the days when we held court at the Coaches Sports Bar and Grill. This was before he left for a career in the Army. He has recently completed a MS in Nuclear Science and has been assigned to the local Air Force Base. [Army in the Air Force…no it is an assignment with a Joint Service Organization at the base; he’s still Army.] This sparked a discussion of the good old days when we wore our “Nerds? We Prefer ‘Intellectual Badasses’” T-shirts.

Scatology Round

S1. Classical composers v ANCIENT ROMANS
Gaius, a 2nd Century A.D. Roman, was responsible for the Roman: LEGAL CODE. [This one caused a mad scramble, essentially a 5-way split, although ‘air force’ was easy to eliminate.]

S2. CURRENT MOVIES v Greek food
In the new Spider-Man movie, the webslinger faces off against an evil opponent named: VULTURE. {Comic enthusiast WALACE made this call. BLZBUB recognizes the salute by the Buzzies sent out to the Ragged Rascals by making team members BEELZEBUB, REAPER, SHRIKE, and LOONEY choices on the list. Grazie!}

S3. BOSTON, MASS v astronomy
It’s a famous neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. BACK BAY [Guest player, Erica, was first with this suggestion.]

S4. GREEK FOODS v classical composers
The filling in a Greek Tiropita is: EGGS AND CHEESE. [Chef Kurgan cooked up this one.]

S5. Astronomy v CURRENT MOVIES
’47 Meters Down’ is a 2017 movie best classified in this genre: HORROR. [Greek chorus.]

S6. Ancient Romans v BOSTON, MASS
What sits at the crest of Beacon Hill and overlooks Boston Commons? STATE HOUSE. [This one caused Mass. confusion, resulting in an unorganized split.]

Brick made the team happy by his re-appearance in ‘burque, but also happy because he brought along two guests, Zack and Erica, who are also triviots. They were off to a good start. Zack knew all about ‘Set’ on the game’s first question, and Erica earned credit for her ‘BackBay’ call. If they stay with us as regular, they too will form memories to be nostalgic about in the deep future.

Frightening Round

1. This famous poem by Robert Frost was first published in 1916: THE ROAD NOT TAKEN.
2. The Likud is a political party in: ISRAEL.
3. The Washington Examiner and The Weekly Standard are ___ opinion publications. CONSERVATIVE.
4. A chemist should know all about iridium. What is it? TRANSITION METAL.
5. Kellogg, General Mills, Post and ___ are the four largest U.S. cereal manufacturers: QUAKER.
6. Which city’s average temperature in January is below zero Fahrenheit: BARROW.
7. ‘Folsum Prison Blues’ is a famous song written in 1953 by: JOHNNY CASH.

The team finished this round with a gratifying 7 of 7 correct. That right there makes it a future nostalgic memory.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Next to Honolulu, the southernmost state capital in the United States is:
Choices: Tucson, Sacramento, Orlando, Austin, Baton Rouge
A: AUSTIN [CHILL gets the call. The team spent the next 25 seconds quaking in their boots, hoping the Red Stick didn’t whack us. It didn’t.]

P2. Which famous woman was married in 1509?
Choices: Queen Isabella, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Catherine of Aragon, Charlotte Bronte,
Marie Antoinette
A: CATHERINE OF ARAGON. [CHILL/DUFF]

P3. Which beverage will fluoresce in direct sunlight or ultraviolet light?
Choices: Instant coffee, orange juice, tonic water, champagne, green tea
A: TONIC WATER. [BLZBUB was all sparkly on this one.]

P4. The Basilique de Notre-Dame de la Paix, Africa’s largest church building, is located here:
Choices: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Suriname, Kenya, Ivory Coast
A: IVORY COAST. [CHILL cut through all the non-French names to worship this one.]

P5. Everyone knows about the Hamilton-Burr duel of 1804 but few know about the ___ duel of 1826.
Choices: Clay-Randolph, Lincoln-Douglas, Clinton-Knox, Hopkins-Adams, Jackson-Tyler
A: CLAY – RANDOLPH. [BLZBUB called a good two-way split to end the discussion going on at the table.]

The team got five boxes on 5 for 5 on this round, with the rest going 4 for 5.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: TRADITIONAL SONGS

“Gaudeamus Igitur” is a song frequently sung at:

1. Supreme Court Hearings
2. Weddings
3. Funerals and Wakes
4. Summer Camps
5. College Graduations

The order of the eliminations was 2, 1, 3, and 4, leaving #5, COLLEGE GRADUATIONS, as the correct answer. DUFF got the essence of the Latin translation, “go forth joyfully” but then got hung up on weddings as the only viable choice. No one, especially our moderator, who is supposed to scan all the answers for viable alternatives, realized that graduations also fit the bill. The rest of the team got hooked on #2 and only switched to #5 when the first wipeout took weddings off the board.

The top individual scores for the night were 60675, 55035, 54052, 53340, 51978, and 49333. {In the crying over spilled milk game: had the top six boxes going into the final tragedy gotten the full 50% bet, the team’s final score for the night would have been 59997 points. <sigh>}
The team average score was 54,068 points.
The team’s ranking was EIGHTH Place.

Two teams beat the hard-to-obtain threshold of 60,000 points. The Fellowship (BWW Kent, OH) edged out the Mad River Bar (NYC, NY) for the win. Their 60,565 won closely over Mad River’s 60,490 points.
Next were three teams over 55,000 points;
Danny K’s Billiards @ 56,054,
BWW Blacksburg, VA @ 55,921, and
Tilted Kilt Scottsdale @ 55, 080 points.

Congratulations on the wonderfully nostalgic memories you’ve just created for your selves.

I don't think I remember hearing **anything** ever sung at a college graduation--not even the Star Spangled Banner or an alma mater. All the music I remember was instrumental, usually from a string quartet.

(The song that should have been sung at my college graduation was Ray Stevens' "The Streak." But that was over too quickly for any sort of musical accompaniment.)

As a new member, I just wanted to thank BLZBUB for the weekly Showdown postings. They are a riot, and very helpful. I also appreciate
the usual suspects who add information to that posting every week.

Many thanks.

Welcome DWYKRO. Glad to have some more New Smyrna players on here. That small town has some good trivia bars.

I was there in December, stopped by Merk's, Surf Club, Om Bar and Peanuts. I'll guess you play with Chicau at Surf Club or Siko at Merk's.

In Gaithersburg MD we are always looking for what New Smyrna bars are out playing.
