Showdown Recap for 8 Aug 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The team amassed an unlucky/lucky thirteen players for the game of Aug 8th. The rock solid stalwarts of the team were all in attendance and seemed ready to do battle with the Buzzheads. And an uphill battle it would prove to be, as the Buzzies flubbed another attempt to get their own format presented correctly. This turned the supposed ‘category’ round into a classic example of a “Scatology Round.” But before we all get to that, here’s the…

Worn-up Round

1. Something or someone described as doddering would be: SHAKY.
2. What city hosted last month’s G20 Summit meeting? HAMBURG.
3. Which musical instrument is *not* classified as a woodwind? CORNET.
4. Most people born under the sign of Scorpio are born in the month of: NOVEMBER.
5. Which of these items would a stamp collector be most interested in? PLATE BLOCK.
6. A major world city was named after this man in 1976: HO CHI MINH.
7. Stout is a ___ beer: DARK
8. A discophile is someone who collects and studies: PHONOGRAPH RECORDS. {Which inevitably led to a discussion of pornographic records…}
9. If you like the beach, you may want to have your honeymoon on the Outer Banks of: NORTH CAROLINA. {Nothin’ could be finer}
10. What is the technical term for the big toe? HALLUX
The team went 10 for 10 on this round, a promising start to this game.

Ground-down Round

1. In what year did Vermont become a state? 1791.
2. This year marks the ___ anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War. 50TH.
3. The Pascal is the S.I. unit of: PRESSURE. {dum-dum-dum da-dah Dum Dum}
4. Newspeak is the language created by the ruling party in this futuristic novel: 1984.
5. ‘Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)’ is a highly regarded album by: DAVID BOWIE {OMG, and we were just singing ‘Under Pressure.’}
6. A ‘Mosiac’ assessment is a tool designed to measure levels of: THREAT FROM ANOTHER. {Ack, the first 3rd clue save of the game}
7. Amelia Bloomer became famous in the 19th Century for her role in: WOMEN’S RIGHTS. {Yeah, but what about her left-handed sisters?}
8. In which sport would a participant execute a Flying Mare? WRESTLING.
9. The Saronic Gulf is part of which body of water? AEGEAN. {How sardonic.}
10. The Jade Emperor is an important deity in: TAOISM.
11. Sacramento, California processes more of this product than any other place in the world: ALMONDS.
12. Which historical figure roamed the Earth first? CICERO. {Obviously the Buzzies have never met our team mate CHILL.}

That round also went well, although not perfect. There were 3rd-clue saves on GD 6 and 10.

Scatology Round*
*and here we go again. The Buzzheads posted six topics on their website, but were those the six that appeared on the screens tonight. NOOooo! They put up last week’s categories instead. BLZBUB will use the intended topics for this week’s game in the recap below.

S1. U.S. GEOGRAPHY v anatomy
Evansville, Gary, and Fort Wayne are cities in: INDIANA. {Greek chorus}

S2. CURRENT SPORTS (like kayaking?) v mythology
Last month’s Wimbledon women’s singles title went to: GARBINE MUGURUZA. {MEERA, for the ace.}

S3. Litch-raw-chure v RUSSIAN HISTORY
The Rus’ people, from which we derive Russia, were from: SCANDINAVIA. {CHILL}

S4. Mythology v U.S. GEOGRAPHY
This state’s six natural regions include the Highland Rim and the Unaka Mountains: TENNESSEE. {BLZBUB never learned that while going to school there, so the team split 5-ways.}

S5. Roosky hist’ry v CURRENT SPORTS (like electric football?)
Who was MVP of last month’s Major League All-Star Game? ROBINSON CANO. {Mighty WALACE did not strike out.}

S6. Anatomy v LITERATURE
‘The Prisoner of Sex’ is a controversial 1971 book written by: NORMAN MAILER. {DUFF called some eliminations, but it came down to a 2-way split with Bukowski.}

That was a bit more challenging. The regions of TN never came up in BLZBUB’s Physics or Numerical Analysis courses. So much for getting a good education at the Univ. of TN Space Institute.

Frightening Round

1. Dr. Roizen of the Cleveland Clinic is a guest and collaborator of this TV doctor: DR. OZ. {The rest were easy to eliminate.}
2. Lego, the toy company, is a ___ concern: DANISH. {They are also a step-hazard concern.}
3. Singer-songwriter Lorde hails from this country: NEW ZEALAND.
4. A deliberately misleading story would be called a: CANARD.
5. Which boxing weight class is between heavyweight and light heavyweight? CRUISER.
6. In what year did Peter Carl Faberge make his first Faberge Egg? 1885.
7. Which convicted criminal was released from prison in May of this year? CHELSEA MANNING.

The team got all of these except for L6. We ascribed the wrong Tsar to being his biggest benefactor.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. In the distant past, Beringia was a land mass that connected what is now:
Choices: Asia and North America, Greenland and Iceland, England and France, Finland and Sweden, Africa and Brazil
A: ASIA AND NORTH AMERICA. {We successfully made the linguistic connection between Bering and Beringia.}

P2. Requiem, weasel, and barbeled are three varieties of:
Choices: Earthworms, Stingrays, Ground Sharks, Coral, Eagles
A: GROUND SHARKS! {We should have just gone to the 5-way, rather than just guess as we did here.}

P3. ‘The Musical Offering’ is a classical work composed in 1747 by:
Choices: John Dryden, Claudio Monteverdi, Jean Sibelius, J.S. Bach, Richard Wagner
A: JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH. {DUFF pre-called this one.}

P4. The sassafras is a member of the ___ family:
Choices: Oak, Pine, Eucalyptus, Palm, Laurel
A: LAUREL. {Cajuns all over the U.S. know this instinctively. Put a sassafras leaf before them, and soon you’ll have gumbo. BLZBUB cooked up this one.}

P5. Born in England in 1858, Beatrice Webb went on to coin this familiar term:
Choices: Gold standard, Nuclear winter, Demon Rum, Lost in translation, Collective bargaining
A: COLLECTIVE BARGAINING. {Most folks split between the 3rd and 5th choice.}

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: ??? {When BUZZIE fucks up and gets the wrong categories posted for the Category Round, he/she also posts the wrong Topic for the Final Tragedy. Based on the ensuing query, BLZBUB supposes the topic might have been CHILDREN’S LIT.

Iola Martin and Callie Shaw are the girlfriends of this familiar pair of fictional brothers:

1. Tom & Sid Sawyer
2. Holden & D.B. Caulfield
3. Sonny & Fredo Corleone
4. Frank & Joe Hardy
5. Brent & Stuart Tarleton

The order of the eliminations was 5, 2, 3, and 1, leaving #4, FRANK & JOE HARDY, as the correct answer. Our moderator, and Honored Ancient One, CHILL, pre-called this answer before any of the choices appeared. All that was required of the team was to punch (caress, tickle, or fondle) the tablet in time to earn the full amount of points wagered.
With the missed L6, P2, and split on P5, the team went into the Final with only six machines on 4 for 5 from Pyramid, while the rest of the team languished at 3 of 5 correct. We NEEDED that pre-call to push all six of our top tablets into a Top Ten finish.

The top individual scores for the night were 51667, 51382, 51214, 50680, 49599, and 49359 points
The team average score was 50,650 points.
The team’s ranking was EIGHTH Place (for the third week in a row).

It looks like Danny K’s is hitting their stride of late. They notched another victory with their 56084 points. This was a good distance ahead of The Fellowship (BWW Kent, OH) with their 55246 points. Then came the Borg. The wetware third place goes to the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ at 52388 points.

Congrats to the wetware-only teams on a good game.

S2. current sports vs. MYTHOLOGY.
HECTOR was killed by Achilles.

S3. LITERATURE vs. Russian history.
"Love From Boy" was a letter written by ROALD DAHL to his mother.

S5. RUSSIAN HISTORY vs. current sports.
The upper nobility during the feudal era were BOYARS.
(I never realized that Chef Boyardee was Russian!)

S6: ANATOMY vs Literature: IT'S A MORE TECHNICAL NAME FOR THE BIG TOE: HALLUX

This question strongly resembles a previous one from a Showdown quiz perhaps seven years ago.

I've seen it perhaps half a dozen times in CD over 25 years.

As always, thanks for the recap, Ken!

I can't remember the exact phrasing of Category Q1 but it went something like this:

S1. U.S. geography v ANATOMY
It is a repetitive nucleotide sequence at the end of a chromosome: TELOMERE.

We were expecting VOCABULARY, so this question didn't seem out of place. After they asked a Wimbledon question for HBO SHOWS I knew something was amiss.

At this late hour, nobody has come up with the MYTHOLOGY question for S5. I reviewed the quiz as BLZBUB posted it to see whether I might have misplaced my best conjecture. It's not posted, but I play too many of these quizzes and so my nomination may have come from a different quiz altogether.

S5: MYTHOLOGY: Matsya, Kalki and Krishna are avatars of what deity? VISHNU.

I might or might not be correct about the avatars named, or about the subject of the question more generally, but I was certainly wrong about the HALLUX being the subject of S6: ANATOMY. HALLUX was the subject of the final question in the Warm-Up Round. My only excuse? I knew this question fell at the end of a round. You must grant that it's unusual to have two anatomy questions end two different rounds in the same quiz.

So regardless whether I'm right about S5, S6 is back up for grabs.

We got the same questions, but the previous week' categories. Did this happen to anyone else?

Given the choices, I suspect it was more likely "American Literature" or "Literary Brothers" as the category.

A couple of buddies and I reunited to play this game for the first time in years.
One of them asked me upon arrival: "Is NTN still fucking up premium games?"
I told him that I had stopped playing premiums for the most part years ago because of how
common and infuriating the errors were becoming, so I didn't like our chances.
Sigh... once again my "NTN monkeys" avatar buffers its street cred.
Incompetence, thy name is Buzztime.

I honestly don't know how you guys put up with this nonsense.
Is this only happening when I play? Is that even possible?
Should I post warnings on here to prepare folks for tomfoolery on the rare occasions that I sneak
in a premium game just in case BT is trying to get me for all of the NTN monkey comments?
A full half of the premiums that I have played over the last six years (about three dozen
games or so) have had ridiculous and avoidable content or programming errors.
Sadly, I'm not exaggerating.
Sure, some have been minor like category misrepresentation or two choices of the same answer present,
but others have had some shockingly egregious errata ( e.g. T3 enzymes with vertebra as an option,
mucking up a Frederick the Great question, the classic roman numeral fiasco during the Six tourney,
etc. ad nauseam). Either way, when I have less confidence in your ability to provide
an accurate trivia game than I do some random bonehead running a live trivia game in the pub,
you may have issues...

And the greatest tragedy is that I pre-called "lit" as the final category because "there hasn't
been nearly enough lit" and then never got to bask in the glory of having it show up as the topic.
I spent most of the time wondering how any of the answers were relevant to "1796".

It's back to Saturday afternoons only for me, thank you.
At least BT only fucks up Countdown minimally.
Thanks for that, I guess...
