Showdown Recap for 5 Sep 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

Was it to be another woo-woo week for the Ragged Rascals in the epic struggle against their own ignorance? Showdown had always seemed to put the team on edge, even when a fan-driven trophy was not at stake. Would this week have been any different if the stakes were higher?
Probably not. The sad litany would not begin until well after the…

Worn-up Round

1. If you are mulling over something you are ___ it: STUDYING.
2. Japan’s Mizuno Corporation specializes in: SPORTS EQUIPMENT.
3. Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo are the main characters in this 1965 novel by James Leo Herlihy: MIDNIGHT COWBOY.
4. Hurricane ___ just paid a deadly visit to the Texas Gulf Coast. HARVEY.
5. A Swiss physician invented this breakfast food circa 1900: MUESLI.
6. ‘Section 8’ was a term that was made popular by this organization: U.S. ARMY.
7. The late George Romero is often called the Father of the modern ___ film. ZOMBIE.
8. Runes are letters in ancient ___ alphabets. GERMANIC.
9. The great-granddaughter of Martha Washington became the wife of this famous American: ROBERT E. LEE.
10. The Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom, is off the coast of: NORWAY. {The best we could do was a split with Denmark. The team got the first nine correct, but the effort flagged a bit on WU10.}

Ground-down Round

1. Pavo, Octans, and Mensa are the names of three: CONSTELLATIONS. {splits}
2. ‘Light in Your Eyes’ is a song recorded in 2003 by this Missouri native: SHERYL CROWE. {Late, but correct.}
3. Kakaako and Ala Moana are districts of this city: HONOLULU.
4. Queen Maxima, reigning Queen-consort of ___, was born in Argentina. THE NETHERLANDS. {Mostly a two-way split.}
5. Humans lack carnassials sectorial: TEETH.
6. ‘Free Women, Free Men’ is a 2017 book from this controversial author: CAMILLE PAGLIA.
7. On the spectrum, which color refracts the least? RED {The list of choices did not include violet, rendering this question trivial. Reflect on that. What a ‘refractionary’ idea.}
8. Habib Bourguiba became the first President of ___ when it became independent of France: TUNISIA.
9. Bulleit is a notable 90 Proof brand of: BOURBON WHISKEY.
10. In Christianity, Mt. ___ is the sacred site of the Transfiguration of Christ: TABOR.
11. A cyanometer measures the: BLUENESS OF THE SKY.
12. ‘Fetch,’ used as a noun, refers to a stretch of: WATER.

There were some delays arriving at the answers for GD’s 1, 2, 4, 5, and 12, including some 2-way splits and third-clue saves. The rest were handled promptly.

Scatology Round

S1. Vocabulary Test v IN THE KITCHEN
A gourmet chef would know that mushrooms are the main ingredient of this mixture: DUXELLES. {Chef KURGAN rescued us from a poisonous mushroom answer.}

S2. Old Testament v MILITARY LEADERS
General George McClellan served as commander of the Army of the: POTOMAC. {CHILL claimed to save us from sure defeat on this one. The Greek chorus demurred.}

S3. U.S. National Parks v OSCAR-WINNING MOVIES
Who directed ‘Argo,’ the movie that won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2012? BEN AFFLECK. {DUFF, who pronounced it Ben Asscrack.}

S4. MILITARY LEADERS v vocabulary test
Which famous leader’s greatest victories came at Issus, Gaugamela, and the Granicus? ALEXANDER THE GREAT. {DUFF again with the joke, ‘Alex the Pretty Good.’}

S5. OSCAR-WINNING MOVIES v Old Testament
Which Best Picture winner was set and filmed in India? SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. {Looks of pre-call speculations. One actually made it to the list.}

S6. IN THE KITCHEN v U.S. National Parks
A 7-bone roast is more commonly called a ___roast. CHUCK. {Ooooh, Chef KURGAN boned us on this one.}

Well five for six with one third-clue save is good for this round. We had accurate pre-calls on S1, 2, 3, and 4, and only one viable choice on S5.

Frightening Round

1. Not counting old King Hamlet, exactly how many characters die in Shakespeare’s Play? EIGHT.
2. Coney Island is at the southern tip of: BROOKLYN.
3. Jon Jones is currently hailed as a champion: MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST.

5. Gamay is the name of a French: GRAPE.
6. The Dove Awards are given by the ___ Association of America: GOSPEL MUSIC.
7. John Schnatter is more commonly known as: PAPA JOHN.

The team went 7 for 7 on this round, even though BLZBUB misinterpreted the question on F2.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. All Periodic Table elements with an atomic number greater than ___ are radioactive:
Choices: 119, 44, 82, 23, 222
A: 82. {Greek chorus}

P2. Which famous painter was about 88 when he passed away in 1576?
Choices: Donatello, Titian, El Greco, Rembrandt, Da Vinci
A: TITIAN. {It didn’t take DUFF long to paint this one by the numbers.}

P3. Its name comes from the Greek words for ‘unfading’ and ‘flower’:
Choices: Chrysanthemum, Eucalyptus, Amaranth, Begonia, Hibiscus
A: AMARANTH. {DUFF got this one, proving he understands ‘Old Geek.’}

P4. Jane Austen’s Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Dicken’s Mrs. Skewton are classic examples of:
Choices: Misers, Psychotics, Kleptomaniacs, Snobs, Monomaniacs
A: SNOBS {Duff strikes again.}

P5. The Golden Law, established on May 13, 1888, abolished ___ in Brazil:
Choices: Banks, Absinthe, Strip Mining, Slavery, European Migration
A: SLAVERY. {BRICK was the first to make this call for the team.}

The team got six boxes through on 5 for 5 in this round, due to a split on P3 between Chrysanthemum and Amananth.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: VITAMINS

The primary function of Vitamin C is the manufacture of:

1. Glucose
2. Lecithin
3. Thiamin
4. Collagen
5. Beta Blockers

The order of the eliminations was 5, 2, 1, and 3, leaving #4, COLLAGEN, as the correct answer. The team was confused (or perhaps better to say ignorant) about the answer to this teaser. Only two of the six boxes coming into this round with 5 for 5 in Pyramid got the correct answer here, and they were the ones ranked #5 and #6. That knocked down a wonderful potential score.

The top individual scores for the night were 57380, 52577, 49669, 49014, 48620, and 45737 points.
The team average score was 50,499 points.
The team’s ranking was a surprising THIRD Place.

It seems that the Final Tragedy lived up to its name tonight. The top team, Tailgate Sports of Minneapolis scored 55, 346. They were trailed by Houlihan’s of Westbury, NY with 51,919 points, to place second. Scooter’s of Las Vegas nearly nipped the Ragged Rascals for third at 50,277 points.

Heading into the Fall, fan-sponsored tourney, a lot of new faces are making their appearance in the Top 10, and a lot of former champs are struggling to hit the Top 20. Should be interesting…
