Showdown Recap for 3 Oct 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

It often seems that things that can go wrong – will go wrong. This Tuesday would add credence to that nostrum. First, the area that we generally claim as our own was reserved by the UNM baseball team for a recruiting event. Next, there was to be a glitch in the system during the Pyramid Round of the Showdown game. While the first was only a minor inconvenience, the second would be deadly to the team’s score for the night. BLZBUB is still in high dudgeon over that, so this recap will be a bare-bones recap of the questions.

Worn-up Round

1. “January: an exceptionally bad start,” is the beginning of this popular 1996 novel: BRIDGET JONES DIARY.
2. Which word is a synonym of urbane? SOPHISTICATED.
3. The quaking ___ is the most widely distributed tree in North America. ASPEN.
4. The Battle of ___ was one of the bloodiest Civil War battles. SHILOH.
5. What was the ancient name of France? GAUL.
6. First they were the ‘café society’ and then they were the: JET SET.
7. Which National Park is located in South Dakota? BADLANDS.
8. The surname of Joseph Stalin, dictator of the Soviet Union for many years, is Russian for: STEEL.
9. Created in 1960, a ‘REIT’ is a type of: INVESTMENT TRUST.
10. Sinology is the study of the: CHINESE.
The team got all except WU6 where we opted for the ‘lost-points generation.’

Ground-down Round

1. The progressive loss of hearing due to aging is called: PRESBYCUSIS.
2. Tumuli are also known as barrows and: BURIAL MOUNDS.
3. Japan’s Festival of Happiness celebrates this flower: CHRYSANTHEMUM.
4. ‘Unforgettable’ has been a huge hit song this year for this rapper born in Morocco: FRENCH MONTANA. {We guessed this one purely on the basis that Morocco was a French colony.}
5. It is classified as number 813.52 in the Dewey decimal system: THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA.
6. A Roman-fleuve is a series of: NOVELS.
7. Mustique is a private island and resort that is part of the Grenadine chain in the: WEST INDIES.
8. By definition, a smarmy person is one who is overly: FLATTERING.
9. Pepe the ___, a popular internet meme, has become controversial due to its use by bigots: FROG.
10. Gas giant exoplanets are called: HOT JUPITERS.
11. What type of boat is a Zodiak boat: INFLATABLE.
12. Hereford is a breed of cattle that originated in: ENGLAND.
The team did well, scoring 8 of 12 for the full points. The Dewey decimal system has been lost to the dust of the ages on our brains, so a 5-way split on that one resulted. There was a delay in answering GD’s 6 and 7, as well. On GD 8, there was a split between ‘flattering’ and ‘grateful.’

Scatology Round

S1. U.S. GEOGRAPHY v Canadian TV shows
Washington and Kent are two of this U.S. state’s five counties: RHODE ISLAND. {BRICK/BLZBUB}

S2. Pop music v PHILOSOPHY
To which school of German philosophy did Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel belong? IDEALISM. {An early call for materialism cost too many points, so we eventually matured into Idealism for this answer.}

S3. World business v GREEK MYTHOLOGY
This figure of Greek mythology is a seer and prophet of Apollo: TIRESIAS. {This was a brilliant pre-call from the adequate DUFF.}

S4. Philosophy v U.S. GEOGRAPHY
The Pearl River flows through which state capital? JACKSON. {BLZBUB pre-called Mississippi, but blanked out on its capital, which HEBEGB supplied.}

S5. Greek mythology v POP MUSIC
‘If it Makes You Happy’ is a ___song frequently played on radio stations. SHERYL CROW. {BLZBUB was happy to sing out here.}

S6. Canadian TV shows v WORLD BUSINESS
This prestigious Italian fashion group was co-founded by Marco Baldassari in 2007: ELEVENTY. {Those scoring well on this question were good “GUESS-ers”}

Most of the team got big points on 4 of the 6 in this round. Some got lucky on S2 and S6.

Frightening Round

1. In the 1870’s, Sandford Fleming came up with the idea of worldwide: TIME ZONES.
2. ‘The Powder and the Glory’ is a 2007 film about business rivals Elizabeth Arden and: HELENA RUBENSTEIN.
3. Team ___ won the America’s Cup in 1995, 2000, and 2017. NEW ZEALAND.
4. Which film starring Jerry Lewis was directed by Martin Scorsese? THE KING OF COMEDY.
5. Antifa is a political group currently most active in this country: UNITED STATES.
6. Lian Yu is an island where this superhero was stranded for several years: ARROW.
7. The city of Basra is the main port of: IRAQ
The team whiffed on the powder puff query but ran the rest of the round thanks to BLZBUB’s insistent yelling.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Which classic book is set in the Hill Country of Texas just after the Civil War?
Choices: Old Yeller, Black Beauty, Tom Sawyer, Little Women, Lassie
A: OLD YELLER. {It took a while, but DUFF convinced us of this.}

P2. Which term was coined in 1824 by inventor John Isaac Hawkins?
Choices: Bifocals, Rolodex, Telegraph, Ballpoint, Aeroplane
A: BIFOCALS. {This was a split choice question.}
AT THIS POINT the system froze for two minutes before resuming with P3. BLZBUB was hopeful that the scores form here out would still register.

P3. This symphony was composed by Hector Berlioz in 1834?
Choices: Carl in Tunisia, Alfred in Germany, Harold in Italy, David in Switzerland, Thomas in Morocco
A: HAROLD IN ITALY. {5-way split}

P4. The Southern Elephant Seal is the largest member of this animal order:
Choices: Edentata, Chiroptera, Carnivora, Marsupialia, Cetacea
A: CARNIVORA. {Edentata took a bite out of us.}

P5. ‘A Cotton Office in New Orleans’ is a noted:
Choices: Sculpture by Rodin, Song by Gershwin, Essay by Rand, Short Story by Mailer, Painting by Degas
A: PAINTING BY DEGAS. {After due deliberation, most of the team agreed that ‘painting’ was the most likely choice.}
UPON REVIEW of the video record, it appears that the team got credit for six boxes on 2 of 5 correct for this round. However, it is not clear to BLZBUB that this was not in fact legitimate. The splits and guesses for P3-5 may have indeed knocked down the individual scores into this range, even though it looked like we’d been robbed by the Buzzies’ system failure.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: Ambrose Burnside was the first President of the National:

1. Honor Society
2. Baseball League
3. Guard
4. Geographic Society
5. Rifle Association

The order of the eliminations was 3, 4, 2, and 1, leaving #5, RIFLE ASSOCIATION, as the correct answer. The team did a terrible job of working the eliminations on this question. We should have been able to narrow down the range of choices based upon Burnside being a Civil War General and the implication that his Presidency would have been after 1865. But no, too any of the choices were of the Gilded Age.

The top individual scores for the night were 39009, 34688, 32825, 31545, 29827, and 28716 points.
The team average score was 32,761 points.
The team’s ranking was SIXTIETH Place. That’s not a misprint, unfortunately.

Tonight’s top location was the BWW Arlington, VA (the legendary Grand Slam team) with their 59,931 points
Second Place was garnered by The Fellowship at BWW Kent, OH with a score of 53,583 points.

The next nearest competitors in the unofficial fan-based tournament were the teams at Big Guys of Winnipeg, MB at 47959 and BWW- Kalamazoo, MI (The K-Zoo Krew) at 44987 points. Given the difficulty of this game, those are good scores.

Technical glitches (such as BLZBUB reports), bad sight lines, and the failure to answer either-or questions (loss of confidence) are my three bugaboos. Presented with any one of them, I'll almost invariably drop points on succeeding questions I would otherwise intuit with gusto.

Which seems, in Albuquerque, to have been so significant an issue as to elicit my sympathy. Best of luck to the Ragged Rascals, foremost that they be permitted to play in tranquility.
