Showdown Recap for 10 Oct 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The prodigal daughters returned from a one-week absence, and they would prove to be as helpful as we all hoped for this game.
The group tonight was 13-strong and playing 20 boxes, an auspicious number to BLZBUB.

Not so auspicious was Ken Z’s being nearly asleep and forgetting to turn on the video camera for the first round. As a small bit of
compensation for this oversight, BLZBUB has included credits for each question where those where discernible.

Worn-up Round

1. – 10. Missing in action
Most of the team got 9 of the 10 correct, be the devil only knows what they might have been. No wait, BLZBUB has no recollection of any of these.
They must be in the Oppositions files.

Ground-down Round

1. The Nile River’s draining basin encompasses exactly ___ countries: 11. {No one had any idea what to answer.}
2. Where in your body would you find a Zona Glomerulosa? ADRENAL GLAND. {We could eliminate retina and hemoglobin, but then it was splitsville.}
3. ‘Along Came a Spider’ introduced the reading public to this detective: ALEX CROSS. {DUFF}
4. Who is the youngest man ever to be Vice President of the United States? JOHN C. BRECKENRIDGE. {CHILL/DUFF}
5. ‘Despacito,’ the title of a hugely popular song, means ___ in Spanish. SLOWLY {REAPER}
6. When was the Fabian Society created in Great Britain? 19TH CENTURY. {DUFF}
7. The highest point in the state of Tennessee is: CLINGMAN’S DOME. {DUFF}
8. The macrobiotic way of eating was popularized in this country in the 1930’s: JAPAN. {MEERA}
9. Macondo is an immortal town in this modern classic: 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE. {DUFF pre-called this.}
10. An oblast is an administrative division of ___ and several nearby countries. RUSSIA {BLZBUB}
11. ‘Shuffleton’s Barbershop’ is a 1950 painting by this U.S. icon. NORMAN ROCKWELL. {BLZBUB}
12. An astronomer should know that Trappist -1 is a: DWARF STAR. {Third-clue save.} If you think BLZBUB is going to make a Peter Dinklage joke
here, well, you are correct.
The team went 9 for 12 on this round with the exceptions noted above.

Scatology Round

S1. WORLD HISTORY v vocabulary
Dangun, “The Grandson of Heaven,” founded the first ___ Kingdom. KOREAN. {DUFF, along with the rest of the team, got sucked in by the inclusion of
Mongolia on the list. CHILL, to his credit, soon suggested Korean and was vindicated as Mongolia was the first choice eliminated.}

S2. Asian cities v U.S. PRESIDENTS
Benjamin Harrison was elected U.S. President in 1888 as a member of the ___ Party. REPUBLICAN. {BRICK made the call.}

S3. LANGUAGES v country music
Where would you most likely hear someone speaking a Papuan language? NEW GUINEA. {JAX made the call.}

S4. U.S. PRESIDENTS v world history
Which U.S. President was elected as a member of the Federalist Party? JOHN ADAMS. {CHILL/BRICK}

S5. Country music v ASIAN CITIES
Guangzhou is the name of a Chinese city that used to be Romanized as: CANTON. {DUFF was on this before the choices appeared.}

S6. VOCABULARY v languages {now BLZBUB is just hoping it is not a vocabulary word from an obscure language}
Which fancy-schmancy word would describe someone who is morally tainted? SCROFULOUS. {We started on this one but got lured away by ‘contumacious’ for some reason.}
The team got 4 of the 6 without pause, but lost points dithering on S1 and S6.

Frightening Round

1. It announced in August that it would stop publishing its print edition: THE VILLAGE VOICE. {We blew this one.}
2. ‘Copy that’ is police radio slang meaning: HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD. {CHILL}
3. Hey, math whiz! What is the factorial of 6? 720. {DUFF, just beating 3 or 4 others to the answer.}
4. Omeprazole, used to treat GERD and peptic ulcers, is marketed as: PRILOSEC. {CROEM}
5. The acclaimed Suzanne Farrell ___ will be closing in December 2017. BALLET. {MEERA made a good call.}
6. George Fox founded the Religious Society of ___ in England in the mid-17 th Century: FRIENDS. {DUFF call for Quakers tuned JAX into the correct
answer.}
7. Colorado Springs, CO is the home to the ___ Hall of Fame. WORLD FIGURE SKATING. {BRICK made this call.}
The team got the last six, and was thankful L1 was only worth 400 points.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. “Dieu et Mon Droit” is the motto of the:
Choices: United Kingdom Monarch, YMCA, Province of Quebec, Habitat for Humanity, Roman Catholic Church
A: UNITED KINGDOM MONARCH {doh! We got suckered in by the French-speaking province of Quebec, forgetting about the Norman Conquest of England as a logical clue.}

P2. The island of Barbuda forms a single state with the island of: ANTIGUA.
Choices: Aruba, Haiti, Antigua, Trinidad, Panama
A: ANTIGUA. {MEERA pre-called this.}

P3. Reepicheep is an odd character in the works of:
Choices: H.P. Lovecraft; C.S. Lewis; T.S.Elliot; J.K.Rowling; R.B.Greaves
A: C.S. LEWIS. {REAPER made a great pre-call here.}

P4. The famous skeletons of Shanidar Cave in Iraq, found in the 1950’s and 1960’s were of:
Choices: Dinosaurs, Neanderthals, Great Apes, Wooly Mammoths, Saber-toothed Tigers
A: NEANDERTHALS. {BLZBUB tentatively gave support to this answer.}

P5. What term did American writer William Gass coin I n 1970?
Choices: Doomsday, Catfishing, Baby Boomer, Metafiction, Steampunk
A: METAFICTION. {There was an early call for the dreaded 5-way split. The team probably could have easily eliminated doomsday and catfishing, or also steampunk, but did not.}

In this round, only 3 boxes scored 4 of 5 for the round. The rest lodged at 3 of 5 correct.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: POETRY

It is a type of poem that has five stanzas of three lines and one stanza of four lines.

1. Tureen
2. Villanelle9:14 PM 10/11/2017
3. Organza
4. Impasse
5. Fanfaronade

The order of the eliminations was 5, 4, 1, and 3, leaving #2, VILLANELLE, as the correct answer. DUFF was pretty sure that this was the correct
answer, but did not boom it out to the rest of the team. Those within easy earshot of him went with this answer, because well, drowning people will
grasp at any straw. Our moderator, CHILL, did not hear it and thus was unable to echo it for the team’s benefit. Fortunately for all, DUFF was
indeed correct, thereby saving our scores.

The top individual scores for the night were 49099, 48332, 46822, 46426, 46075, and 45138 points.
The team average score was 46,982 points.
The team’s ranking was NINTH Place.

Tonight’s champions reside at the BWW Kent, OH (The Fellowship) with their 58382 points. The strong Second Place finishers were The Tailgate,
Minneapolis, MN with a score of 58100. They were followed by the (Grand Slam Team) at BWW Arlington, VA at 54946 points.

Raspberries to Torrey Pines in Las Vegas, NV for playing Borg-style.

Kudos also go out to West Park Station, Mad River, BWW Kalamazoo (the K-Zoo Krew), Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ, and the Stained Glass Pub of
Elkridge, MD for Top Ten performances.

6-for-6 on the alternative Scattergories? Thanks, LILJOL, for doing the heavy lifting - not, apparently, without personal regret.

The only one I shared with you was S1. Reviewing your list, I'm glad my group went in the other direction.
