Showdown Recap for 17 Oct 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The Ragged Rascals assembled 14 strong players for this week’s edition of Bust Your Brainbox. We were happily surprised to see two visitors who were formerly regulars on the team while we played at Coaches Sports Bar many years ago. Dr Jason and his lovely wife Jennifer were in town to visit family and took the opportunity to drop by to sit in with the team and renew acquaintances. There were many jocular references to the likelihood of there being medical or anatomical questions set for tonight’s game. Jen was also prompted to be on top form for the usual onslaught of lit-raw-chure questions that were surely coming her way.

Worn-up Round

1. Who would most likely win an Edgar Award? WRITER
2. Which of these would you most likely see at a baseball game: SLUGFEST.
3. Who created the fictional character Lisabeth Salander? STIEG LARSSON.
4. Mt Pinatubo is an active volcano located here: THE PHILIPPINES.
5. The first female Supreme Court Justice was appointed by: RONALD REAGAN.
6. This popular fish is also known as the Millionfish or the Rainbow fish: GUPPY
7. The capital of this state is a seaport: ALASKA.
8. How did Japan’s Akira Kurosawa become famous in the 20TH Century? MOVIE DIRECTOR.
9. Thunderbird, Night Train, Cisco, and ___ are notorious cheap wines. MAD DOG/20-20.
10. By definition, an obdurate person is one who is: STUBBORN.

The team completely missed WU 6 and got a late correct call on WU 7, because someone forgot that Portland is not the capital of Oregon.

Ground-down Round

1. Chalcography is the art of engraving on: COPPER PLATES.
2. ‘Frabjous’ is one of many words invented by: LEWIS CARROLL. {Jennifer made her first crucial call on this one.}
3. Who or what is Vanessa Atalanta? BUTTERFLY.
4. The original ghetto was located on an island within this European city? VENICE.
5. Which animal is native to South America? ALPACA.
6. Which mathematical term refers to a side of a right triangle? HYPOTENUSE.
7. The ___ River starts in Saskatchewan and flows for 1,000 miles? CHURCHILL.
8. This one-act play was written in 1957 by Harold Pinter: THE DUMB WAITER.
9. At present, the highest murder rates are found in ___ and African countries: LATIN AMERICA.
10. Rhodium is a member of the ___ group of elements: PLATINUM. {SCOOTR made a good call on this one.}
11. Early colonial New England’s largest industry was the production of: RUM.
12. In classic French cuisine, what is a sable? COOKIE.

The group played well as a team on this round but still missed GD’s 3, 7, 11, and 12, save but for the third clue.

Scatology Round

S1. LITERATURE v Italian cuisine
Bigger Thomas is the protagonist of this classic novel by Richard Wright:
NATIVE SON. {DUFF pre-called this.}

S2. Geology v 1950’s MUSIC
“Rollin’ Stone” is a famous 1950’s blues song by:
MUDDY WATERS. {DUFF, CHILL and PANCHO collaborated on this one.}

S3. Basketball v WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
Where do the majority of the Cree people live? CANADA. {JAX and SCOOTR deduced the answer to this one.}

S4. 1950’s MUSIC v Lit-raw-chure, harrumph
Mike Stoller and Jerry Lieber wrote a 1950’s song about a cat named Joe who lived:
DOWN IN MEXICO. {HEBEGB was the first to suggest this, and SCOOTR confirmed it.}

S5. WHERE DO THEY LIVE v geology
The Tohono-O’Odham people live in these two countries:
UNITED STATES – MEXICO. {MEERA made this non-trivial call.}

S6. ITALIAN CUISINE v basketball
A lover of Italian food should know that radiatori are: PASTA SHAPES. {JAX made a somewhat tentative call for this, but since we had no better idea, the team went with it.}

The team smashed this round. Going six for six on the Scatology Round is usually a good harbinger for this group.

Frightening Round

1. A Sumo wrestler figure skating and a running of the bulldogs can be seen on TV ads for: GEICO. {Aside from a lack of grammatical finesse, the Buzzies wrote an entertaining question here. BLZBUB would have used ‘site’ marks on the key phrases.}
2. Which word would best describe a rude person? CHURLISH.
3. ‘Bluetiful’ is the name of a new: CRAYOLA CRAYON.
4. ‘Losing My Religion’ and ‘Shiny Happy People’ are among the best known songs of: R.E.M.
5. A scientific name for your forehead is: SINCIPUT. {And Dr Jason saves the round and possibly the game with this call. Huzzah!}
6. Which royal relation married millionaire financier Spenser Matthews this year? PIPPA MIDDLETON.
7. Origami is the Japanese art of: FOLDING PAPER. {Greek chorus, or perhaps in this case Kabuki Theater. Or not?}

Wow, that was gratifying. Going 7 for 7 on Frightening after a 6 for 6 on Scatology is awesome. Now, dare we hope to do as well on the…

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher (that’s a mouthful) was a battlefield opponent of:
Choices: Bonaparte, U.S. Grant, Attila the Hun, Geo. Washington, Horatio Nelson
A: NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. {DUFF pre-called this answer.}

P2. This condition, due to a lack of vitamin B3, is common in the developing world:
Choices: Asthma, Sciatica, Pellagra, Gout, Melanoma
A: PELLAGRA. {And the team lauds Dr Jason on the timing of his visit.}

P3. ‘A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds’ is part of a famous quote by:
Choices: Herman Melville, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer
A: RALPH WALDO EMERSON. {DUFF waved off a bad pre-call for H.L. Mencken by BLZBUB, but the Horned One was the first to ID Emerson as the correct choice.}

P4. On December 14, 1780, he married Elizabeth Schuyler in Albany, New York:
Choices: Alexander Hamilton, James Fennimore Cooper, Joseph Smith, Benedict Arnold, Tom Thumb
A: ALEXANDER HAMILTON. {Although it started as a speculation, DUFF’s answer proved to be the best on this list.}

P5. ‘The Italian Concerto’ is a 1735 keyboard work by ___for two manual harpsichords.
Choices: Brahms, Verdi, Wagner, Bach, Beethoven
A: BACH. {…Ahh Bach! exclaimed DUFF while gently waving his Hawkeye-like hand in the air.}

Well wonder of wonders, the Rascals managed to run the board on this round as well as the prior two rounds. This comes as a sweet respite from the drubbings we have been taking over the last three week’s worth of Showdown games. Of course this means we will probably have to pay the piper in the…

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: FLOWERS

This genus of flowering plants was named after a naturalist born in Scotland:

1. Rhododendron
2. Solanum
3. Gardenia
4. Erica
5. Acacia

The order of the eliminations was 1, 2, 5, and 4, leaving #3, GARDENIA, as the correct answer. This was a perplexing question, and the team did not do very well with it. At the end, there were 4 boxes on the correct answer for the full bonus, and a few more that switched to it after the first one or two choices had been expunged from the board.

The top individual scores for the night were 58458, 58143, 58074, 56359, 48035, and 47157.
The team average score was 54,371 points.
The team’s ranking was SEVENTH Place.

This week, nearly all of the Top Ten teams are participants in the Sandbagger Tourney.
Top Honors went to the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ at 59,750 points.
Second was Danny K’s of Orange CA at 59,230.
Third was Bug Guys of Winnipeg, MB at 58,358.
4. BWW Kent, OH; The Fellowship at 58,347
5. Tailgate Sports, Minneapolis, MN at 56,284
6. BWW Chrystal City, VA; The Grand Slam at 54,613
7. The Ragged Rascals (see above)
8. Blue Goose Café, Cincinnati, OH at 54,111
9. Players, Jacksonville FL at 53,403
10. BWW Elmwood, New Orleans, LA at 52,875

Breathing a sigh of relief at still being a Top Ten team...we are the RAGGED RASCALS

S2. GEOLOGY vs. 1950s music
The real rare mineral is XENOTIME.

(And I do believe that gives us all 12 of the questions.)
