Showdown Recap for 24 Oct 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

Worn-up Round

1. Which person was an award-winning writer in the 20TH Century? UPTON SINCLAIR JR.
2. All these states except ___ share a common border with Mexico. LOUISIANA.
3. Which work by Shakespeare is often referred to as ‘The Scottish Play’? MACBETH
4. An event that is risky or uncertain would best be describes as: DICEY.
5. Which historical figure died by getting a haircut by a Guillotine? ROBESPIERRE.
6. The 2015 romance thriller ‘See Me’ is the 18th novel from this popular author: NICHOLAS SPARKS.
7. In days of old, it was the section of a ship in which passengers paid the lowest fare: STEERAGE. {Probably because they were treated like cattle.}
8. Which groundbreaking black comedian died this year at the age of 84? DICK GREGORY.
9. Which flightless bird is now extinct? MOA.
10. What is the title of Leni Riefenstahl’s film about the 1934 Nuremberg Rally? TRIUMPH OF THE WILL.

It is pretty much irrelevant to try to assign credit for the correct calls of answers on this round. Most of them were pre-calls or Greek Chorus answers. Being the first among many who could have made the accurate call on each of these questions is just good teamwork.

Ground-down Round

1. In the United Kingdom, a ‘Sloane Ranger’ is the equivalent of a ___ in the United States. PREPPY.
2. Named after a Hawaiian Goddess, Haumea is a ___ discovered in 2004. DWARF PLANET.
3. Which store did Amazon.com recently purchase for $13.7 Billion? WHOLE FOODS.
4. In Islamic tradition, this Archangel was the prophet Muhammad’s source of inspiration: GABRIEL.
5. Blockbuster, a term now associated with movies, originally meant a: LARGE BOMB.
6. He is one of two U.S. Senators from the state of Vermont: PATRICK LEAHY.
7. Muirfield voted this year to allow women members. What kind of club is it? GOLF.
8. Norman Bridwell wrote the popular series of children’s books featuring: CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG.
9. It is a large type of sweet cherry: OXHEART.
10. Amharic is the official language of: ETHIOPIA.
11. This Broadway star originated the roles of Maureen in ‘Rent’ and Elphaba in ‘Wicked’: IDINA MENZEL.
12. It was called the Medical College of Louisiana when founded in 1834: TULANE

Although the team had to scramble around for the answers to #’s 5, 8, and 11, all of the queries in this round were nailed down for major points. At this point of the game, four boxes were on a perfect 17,000 points and an additional seven were above 16,500 points. This was an unprecedented event for the Ragged Rascals.

Scatology Round

S1. LEGENDS OF JAZZ v world rivers
With what trumpeter did Gil Evans record the 1960 album ‘Sketches of Spain’? MILES DAVIS. {MEERA beat all of us to this pre-call.}

S2. What is it? v FRENCH HISTORY
She was France’s first female Prime Minister: EDITH CRESSON. {BLZBUB gets the credit here, while most of the team complained that this was too recent to be ‘history’.}

S3. Trees v CURRENT MOVIES (like ‘The River Wild’?)
‘Tulip Fever’ is a 2017 movie set in: 17TH CENTURY AMSTERDAM. {SCOOTR makes the call.}

S4. French history v LEGENDS OF JAZZ
This jazz great’s 1971 autobiography is titled ‘Beneath the Underdog’: CHARLES MINGUS. {This one consumed some time arriving at the answer, but we got it.}

S5. CURRENT MOVIES v what is it?
The 2017 movie ‘Atomic Blonde’ can best be described as a: SPY THRILLER. {MEERA made the best pre-call by saying, “adolescent male fantasy.”}

S6. World rivers v TREES
Which tree is a member of the Poplar family? ASPEN. {Ouch, this one was a 3-rd clue save, pulling us off the birch.}

The team held its ground too long on ‘birch’ on S6, and had to work the eliminations hard on S4. The other questions were in our wheelhouse.

Frightening Round

1. ‘From Peru to Cebu…’ sings ___ on her hit song ‘Orinoco Flow.’ ENYA.
2. Which U.S. President graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy? JIMMY CARTER.
3. Tintoretto was a noted Italian painter of the ___ Century. 16 TH.
4. Of these chemical elements, which has the lowest Atomic Number? BERYLLIUM.
5. Chameleon was the first of the supervillains to be pitted against: SPIDER-MAN. {Oof! Biff! Pow, we got knocked down.}
6. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. combat troops were withdrawn from: VIETNAM.
7. Designer Stella McCartney is the ___ of Paul McCartney. DAUGHTER.

Another great round! The team got 1-4 immediately, but had splits on F5. After that it was a run for the goal-line on 6 & 7. Six boxes finished with 7 for 7, while the rest had 6 for 7 (6300 points).

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. H.H. Asquith was the British Prime Minister during this period:
Choices: Swinging 60’s; World War II; Edwardian Era; French Revolution; Cold War
A: EDWARDIAN ERA. {DUFF was pre-calling for ‘the 19-aughts’ before the choices appeared. The rest was easy.}

P2. Computus is a calculation that determines the calendar date of:
Choices: Ramadan, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter, Halloween
A: EASTER. {After eliminating the fixed feast days, the answer was obvious.}

P3. A zoologist would describe an animal without a tail as:
Choices: Demersal, Hypoxic, Tunicate, Anurous, Limnic
A: ANUROUS. {JAX, our field ornithologist, put us on this one rapidly. BLZBUB was disappointed to see his pre-call, ‘excaudate,’ not on the list.}

P4. Which country’s flag has a dragon in it?
Choices: Thailand, Tonga, Bhutan, Uganda, Romania
A: BHUTAN. {All eyes turned to BLZBUB, and he responded by pre-calling the correct answer. Mini-Sheldon is he when it’s time for ‘fun with flags’.}

P5. What is the name of the main character in the Anthony Burgess novel ‘A Clockwork Orange’?
Choices: Pompey, Alex, Nero, Julian, Herbert
A: ALEX. {This was nearly a Greek Chorus answer.}

Wonderful! The team handled every question in this round with little difficulty.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: BODIES OF WATER

Which body of water is named after a British seal hunter?

1. Gulf of Bothnia
2. Weddell Sea
3. Bering Sea
4. Andaman Sea
5. White Sea

The order of the eliminations was 1, 5, 3, and 4, leaving #2, WEDDELL SEA, as the correct answer. After running through the first five rounds virtually unscathed, the team decided to play a safety on the Final Tragedy. Well…everyone except BLZBUB, who waddled on down to the Weddell, after deciding “Bering” was just too far-fetched to be the correct answer.

The top individual scores for the night were 62956, 62875, 60634, 56614, 54643, and 54201 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 58,653 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was ELEVENTH Place.

Once again, The Fellowship at the BWW in Kent, OH put up monster numbers to finish in First Place with their score of 62,507. Nipping at their heels was the team from Teaser’s of Chicago at 62,287 points. Third Place went to the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ, finishing at 61,642 points. Well played, folks.
