Showdown Recap for ___ at BWW Gibson in ABQ

Ah, the Ragged Rascals. Such a fine bunch of people. Magnanimous in victory. Stalwart in defeat. Tonight they came for Sandbagger Trophy immortality, but like this year’s Chicago Cubs, would not advance past the second round of the Playoffs.

To paraphrase Shakespeare,
For never was a story of more woe than this of Raggedette and their Tailgate foe.

Worn-up Round

1. This U.S. President was nicknamed ‘Old Rough and Ready’: ZACHARY TAYLOR.
2. Which item would you most likely find on a sailboat: SPINNAKER.
3. Singer Mary J. Blige is often referred to as the Queen of: HIP HOP SOUL.
4. John Profumo’s affair with a call girl helped bring down this British Prime Minister: HAROLD MACMILLAN.
5. To provide a service is to: PURVEY.
6. Miles Archer is the partner of ___ and the victim in ‘The Maltese Falcon.’ SAM SPADE.
7. Born in Russia in 1863, Konstantin Stanislavski made great contributions to the field of: ACTING! {He was a Master Thespian.}
8. Which U.S. island has the largest population: LONG ISLAND.
9. What actor was the first President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences: DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS SR.
10. In what year did Hannibal cross the Alps and invade Italy? 218 B.C.

The team got 9 of 10 correct without fault, but settled for a dicey split on WU9, with Barrymore as the distractor.

Ground-down Round

1. The mortise and tenon joint would be used by a: WOODWORKER.
2. ‘The Phantom ___’ is a famous 1961 children’s book by Norman Juster. TOLLBOOTH.
3. The city of Davenport, Iowa, lies on the ___ River. MISSISSIPPI.
4. Marmonta Monax is the scientific name for the: WOODCHUCK.
5. Who was the first Governor of Puerto Rico? PONCE DE LEON.
6. When two angles add up to 90 degrees, they are called ___ angles. COMPLEMENTARY.
7. Rice is the main ingredient in Nasi Lemak, the national dish of: MALAYSIA.
8. What is the southernmost state of Mexico? CHIAPAS.
9. Hyoscine, also known as Scopolamine, is used to treat: MOTION SICKNESS.
10. The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize went to Colombian President: JUAN MANUEL SANTOS.
11. The Pawnee are an Indian Tribe that used to make its home in the ___ River Valley. PLATTE.
12. Where would one most likely find a comprimario: OPERA.

There were either late calls or third-clue saves on GD’s 5, 10, and 12. The main body of this round was relatively painless, except for some random, odd dropouts on some of the boxes. On those, the box failed to register a score, but did not deduct the 250 point penalty. {HELLO BUZZIE, is this a known software glitch?}

Scatology Round

S1. World business v ARTISTIC STYLES
This artistic style was especially popular during the Italian Renaissance: INTARSIA. {DUFF’s artistic stylings of trivia answers was rewarded.}

S2. CITIES OF THE WORLD v vocabulary
What city serves as the capital of Guam? HAGATNA. {MEERA called off BLZBUB’s bad suggestion of ‘Apia,’ and put us in the correct city.}

S3. THE BOOK OF GENESIS v human anatomy
A reader of the Book of Genesis should know that ___ was the son of Cain. ENOCH. {CROEM, fighting off the uncertainty of the history brain-trust.}

S4. VOCABULARY v world business
What kind of personality does a splenetic individual have? ILL-TEMPERED. {DUFF pointed to BLZBUB as a Visual Aid.}

S5. Human anatomy v CITIES OF THE WORLD
The Plaza de Cibeles is one of this city’s most popular attractions: MADRID. {Splits with Montevideo tamped down some scores.}

S6. ARTISTIC STYLES v the book of genesis
Direct Carving is an artistic method revived in the early 20 th Century by: SCULPTORS. {A third-clue save was the best we could do on this one.}

This round took a bit of a bite out of our peak scores. This was especially true on S5 and S6, but delays in arriving at answers also affected S2 and S3.

Frightening Round

1. Will and John ___ created cornflakes and founded a business empire based on cereal. KELLOGG.
2. Which ethnic group just voted to secede from Iraq? KURDS. {Yes, WAY!.}
3. Bornholm is a Danish island in the: BALTIC SEA.
4. 2017 marks the 60 th Anniversary of this magazine’s founding: GQ.
5. An innocent and naïve person would best be described as: INGENUOUS.
6. From 1991 to 1995, Bill Belichick was the head coach of the NFL’s: CLEVELAND BROWNS.
7. The first female comic book title character was ___, Queen of the Jungle. SHEENA.

The group had a very good performance for this round, but it was marred by a problem with L4. Several people fell for the Siren Call of Playboy. The team scored solid perfectos on 6 of the 7 queries, excluding L4.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. On the geologic timescale, the ___ Epoch is part of the Paleogene Period.
Choices: Jurassic, Permian, Saline, Aquitanian, Eocene
A: EOCENE. {Given that DUFF is usually about 90% correct on all of his calls, it was no surprise that most of the team heeded his call that Eocene could be eliminated. It was a rare miscue on his behalf, but it would prove very costly to our final score. For the record, CROEM made the correct call on this question, to no avail.}

P2. Which Shakespeare play is considered a problem play because it is part tragedy and part comedy?
Choices: Coriolanus, Measure for Measure, As You Like it, The Tempest, Twelfth Night
A: MEASURE FOR MEASURE. {This started off as a 5-way split. There was an early suggestion that it might be #2, but that got no support. We were able to eliminate #4 before time ran out, but almost everybody was already locked into their choice by then.}

P3. ___ Chemistry is the study of non-carbon based compounds.
Choices: Quantum, Applied, Nuclear, Inorganic, Statistical
A: INORGANIC. {This was essentially a Greek Chorus pre-call from the group.}

P4. The first ballet was performed in 1581. Where was it staged?
Choices: French Court, Lincoln Center, Covent Garden, Prague National Theater, La Scala
A: FRENCH COURT. {HEBEGB or WALACE was he first to offer the correct suggestion. It took a while, but the rest of the group accepted this correct choice.}

P5. The Bowhead ___ has the largest mouth of any animal.
Choices: Ostrich, Lizard, Hippo, Rhino, Whale
A: WHALE. {Greek Chorus. Finally, a gawd-damned-pink-fuzzy-venomous animule question that BLZBUB can answer and they make it so the whole team knows it as well.}

The team suffered greatly on this round with the breakdown on P1, and the split on P2 killing our scores. Only five of our boxes scored as high as 4 of 5 on this round, the rest languished at 3 of 5 correct.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: MUSIC LESSON

A music professor would tell you that the relative key of F Major is:

1. B Flat Minor
2. L Minor
3. A Major
4. G Sharp Major
5. D Minor

The order of the eliminations was 2, 1, 4, and 3, leaving #5, D MINOR, as the correct answer. It only took CROEM a few seconds once the five choices had been revealed to make the correct call. Unfortunately, it was not relayed to the team in a timely fashion, resulting in many boxes dumping about one-third of their wagered points.

The top individual scores for the night were 47283, 44367, 44274, 43596, 42240, and 41975 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 44,005 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was EIGHTEENTH Place.

The Ragged Rascals congratulate the group at Tailgate in Minneapolis, MN for their victory over the Rascals in the Round of Eight in the Sandbagger Tournament with their 13 TH Place finish with a score of 46,087 points.

Top honors for this game go to Danny K’s of Orange, CA with 60,194 points. Teaser’s squeaked by The Fellowship to place Second. It was Teaser’s of Chicago @ 58537 to the Fellowship of BWW Kent, OH @ 58,376 points. The next highest score was Scooters of Las Vegas @ 52,308 points; well below the Top Three.

For other comparisons within the Sandbagger Tourney, look to ANON’s posts on SCARatings or BadBart.

S.1. WORLD BUSINESS vs. artistic styles
The Hanjin Group is SOUTH KOREAN.

S.6. artistic styles vs. THE BOOK OF GENESIS.
The 4th son of Jacob was JUDAH.
(It might have been a tough question, but none of the other choices were sons of Jacob.)

PS Congratulations to the Tilted Kilt, for sending us packing in the Sandbag.

Thank you, Sir. Question by question, the results you posted for the Ragged Rascals were uncannily similar to those we had at the Tailgate, right down to the bobble on the Final Showdown.

And Teaser's was eliminated from the Sandbag Tournament with a 58K by the only site which outscored them. No justice.

Unless I'm misremembering, the second Human Anatomy question asked for the name for the outer ear. We had loud precalls for "pinna" from several quarters, but when that did not show up as a choice, we bled a negligible amount of points before all getting on AURICLE. "Pinna" then showed up as the factoid as an alternate name after the answer.

In any game BT offers, choosing not to answer results in a score of 0. This holds true for final tragedy and the Flashback round of Spotlight among other unusual rounds.

Back in the day in the Flashback round of SL, any incorrect answer resulted in a -250 even if you were 1 year off. Naturally most players just sat there for the 8 questions and didn't punch anything for fear of the negative.

That was back in the day when I played many nights a week and experienced all the games, even the ones I didn't like...

I wasn't particularly good at SL, but despite that the Flashback round was one of my favorite rounds of the week. While everyone else in the bar kept hands safely away from the Playmaker, I usually scored over half the points possible for that round and scoffed at the non-participators while doing so... like, "What's up, don't like a challenge?"

I'd typically get between 6 and 7k solo, in the beginning almost all the clues were either the big 4 Oscar winners or basic history so it was much much easier than it is now. The very first clue of the very first game was "Panama Canal opens". Then I'd go around suggesting that if the others weren't going to play they should turn their box back in so others could use it. :shock: :lol:

I didn't make many friends. And not much has changed over the years. :D

They had a suggestion that entailed neither the keeping nor the returning of the box?
