Showdown Recap for 14 Nov 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The team that assembled for this game was about average in size for this location. Twelve players manned 16 boxes for this tilt. Missing tonight were our bio-chem student, our chef, our ornithologist, and our chemical engineer. Their addition to our mix would probably have paid dividends in our final score for this game. This would certainly have been so if any of them would have been able to overrule any one of several bad calls that would soon be made by BLZBUB.

“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven..”
― John Milton, Paradise Lost

Worn-up Round

1. ‘Ode to a ___’ is a famous poem by John Keats. NIGHTINGALE.
2. Other than a baseball pitch, a slider is a: SMALL, SQUARE SANDWICH.
3. The Gutta-Percha is a type of tree that is native to: SOUTHEAST ASIA.
4. Which city is known worldwide for a section known as the Latin Quarter? PARIS.
5. Hydraulic action is the predominant process in the creation of ___ along the ocean. CAVES.
6. The Genesee River flows 157 miles before emptying into Lake: ONTARIO. {BLZBUB misfires.}
7. If someone calls you ‘meshugganah,’ then you’re probably: A LITTLE CRAZY.
8. The tsetse fly is a pest native to this area: AFRICA.
9. Jonathan Harker’s journal is a fictional document that is a part of this famous book: DRACULA.
10. The New Deal of 1933 created the ___ Valley Authority. TENNESSEE.

Eight for ten was the accomplishment for this round. ‘Escarpments’ drew some attention away from ‘caves’ during the discussion of WU 5, resulting in a split. BLZBUB committed a mortal sin, referred to as “A Zebra” on WU 6. For those not familiar with the culture of the Trivia Palooza, ZEBRA is a long-time player and attendee at those events. If (and inevitably when) a question comes up and he confidently calls an answer that turns out to be wrong, yet is given among the five choices, it can derail the team. This error has been dubbed “A Zebra.” On WU 6, BLZBUB confidently called ‘Champlain’ only to see the Genesee dump his hopes into the Ontario.

Ground-down Round

1. In corporate finance, a ___ is a long-term debt instrument to borrow money. DEBENTURE.
2. He was arrested in England in 1670 for preaching the Quaker religion: WILLIAM PENN.
3. An expert in ___ would know what an affricate is. PHONETICS.
4. In Carlo Collodi’s ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio,’ Pinocchio kills this character: THE TALKING CRICKET.
5. Benne seeds are more commonly called ___ seeds: SESAME.
6. An allele is one of a number of alternative forms of the same: GENE.
7. Former FBI agent Joe Pistone did undercover work under this pseudonym: DONNY BRASCO.
8. The Arab Federation of Iraq and ___ was formed in 1958. JORDAN.
9. In theology, which word is used to refer to a trivial, forgivable sin? VENIAL.
10. Alopecia Areata is also known as: SPOT BALDNESS.
11. Blefuscu is the name of a fictional ___ that first appears in print in 1726. COUNTRY.
12. In the world of sports, Jeff Horn is an Australian: BOXING CHAMPION.

The team scored a mere seven of 12 for the full points. There was a late call on GD 3, and third-clue saves on GD’s 11 and 12. A two-way split on GD 8 (with Syria) and a full-on 5-way split on GD 5, account for the rest of the missing points.

Scatology Round

S1. Battles of Long Ago v U.S. GEOGRAPHY
The Ohio River flows from Pittsburg, PA to Cairo, ___. ILLINOIS. {Greek Chorus for the pre-call.}

S2. Poetic lines v INDIA
In India, the wife of a Rajah would be called a: RANI, {MEERA made this pre-call.}

S3. 20 TH CENTURY MUSIC v astronomy
Which singer sang of the ‘Van Lear Rose’? LORETTA LYNN. {HEBEGB made a nice pre-call here.}

S4. India v BATTLES OF LONG AGO
Fought in 1631, the Battle of Breitenfeld took place during the ___ War. THIRTY YEARS’ {DUFF made this pre-call}

S5. ASTRONOMY v poetic lines
Kowal, McNaught, and Lagekvist are: PERIODIC COMETS. {BLZBUB made the call for a two-way split with this answer and ‘asteroids.’}

S6. U.S. GEOGRAPHY v 20 th century music
The largest U.S. swamp is the Atchafalaya Swamp in: LOUISIANA. {BLZBUB made the pre-call, and related to the team that this was where he was first introduced to the leach.}

The team got five pre-calls on this round, and the one 2-way split. Big points.

Frightening Round

1. As two is the binary, so ___ is to vigesimal. TWENTY.
2. What lyricist and songwriter received the 2017 Pen/Allen Service Award? STEPHEN SONDHEIM. {Another Zebra by BLZBUB!}
3. The French Drop and the Double Lift are: MAGIC TRICKS. {Our resident prestidigitator, CHILL, pointed out that they are actually ‘sleights (of hand)’ and not tricks. They are a move within a trick.}
4. It is traditional to serve a margarita in a modified version of a: CHAMPAGNE COUPE. {BLZBUB strikes again ;-( }
5. A hortatory speech is one that is: ENCOURAGING. {It was encouraging to see DUFF lift our score after BLZBUBian tragedy.}
6. ‘There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold’ is the first line of this song: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.
7. In the immigration policy ‘DACA,’ the ‘C’ stands for: CHILDHOOD.

The team suffered from BLZBUB’s mental lapses in this round. On F2, he jumped on the ‘Hamilton’ bandwagon and ignored the other possible answers. On F4, the had a strange mental glitch where upon seeing ‘Highball glass’ among the choices, somehow made the false assumption that it implied a stemmed glass. The actual stemmed glass was, of course, the champagne coupe which is similar to a martini glass. ARRRGGH! Damn you BLZBUB!

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Two globes and a sundial are among the objects depicted in this 1533 painting:
Choices: The Ambassadors, The Bathers, The Outcast, The Bagpipe Player, The Milkmaid
A: THE AMBASSADORS. {DUFF made an early call on this one.}

P2. The Gulf of Genoa is part of the ___ Sea.
Choices: Baltic, Adriatic, Black, Ligurian, Aegean
A: LIGURIAN. {“Won’t get fooled again” is our new theme song for Italian Seas.}

P3. Cladonia is a moss-like lichen that is the main source of food of this northern animal:
Choices: Reindeer, Arctic Fox, Polar Bear, Snowy Owl, Walrus Seal
A: REINDEER. {BLZBUB got a small measure of redemption upon making this call for the team.}

P4. Which famous woman was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI?
Choices: Catherine de Medici, Lucrezia Borgia, Joan of Arc, Marie Antoinette, Lavinia Fontana
A: LUCREZIA BORGIA. {DUFF pre-called this one.}

P5. American writer O. Henry coined this term in 1904:
Choices: Iron Curtain, Gay Nineties, Tin Lizzie, Ivy League, Banana Republic
A: BANANA REPUBLIC. {Kablooie! BLZBUB completes his Trifecta of Futility by calling for the elimination of this answer from consideration. The whole team, minus one lucky skeptic, got taken down by this egregious error.}

BLZBUB is still in self-flagellation mode for his horrible answers during this game, and silently vows to just Shut the Fuck UP during the Final Tragedy round to prevent further demolishing the team’s score.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: CITY ETYMOLOGY

Which U.S. city is named after a Revolutionary War general?

1. Greensboro,
2. Harrisburg
3. Savannah
4. Worchester
5. Pittsburgh

The order of the eliminations was 4, 3, 5, and 2, leaving #1, GREENSBORO, as the correct answer. Our history-braintrust gurus (DUFF & CHILL) were quick to settle on this fertile answer. This allowed all of the team to just punch it in and wait for the big points to be added to their scores.

The top individual scores for the night were 52879, 50893, 49583, 48989, 48942, and 48856 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 50,023 points. The Ragged Rascals’ quest to better the scores of the two finalists for the Sandbagger Trophy (The Fellowship and the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ) fell short of the mark.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was FIFTH Place, overall, and FOURTH in the wetware-only ranks.

Once again, The Fellowship, playing from the BWW in Kent, OH took Top Honors, this time with their score of 55,890 points. Congrats to the Champions of the Sandbagger Tournament. They defeated the team at the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ with their 48,618 score.
The Next place team was the seldom-seen Beef o Brady’s of Prattville, AL at 55,188 points. They were followed by a well-known Borg Collective.
True THIRD PLACE goes to the Old Barn of Portland OR at 51941 points.

Thanks as always, BLZBUB! And don't beat yourself up unduly--we have all been there. Fortunately, my teammates are the forgiving sort, which helps mitigate the pain I feel over my own unfortunate past calls.

The other India question we missed completely, so I can't remember exactly what it was. It gave a bunch of words and asked what they related to. The answer was CALENDARS.
