Showdown Recap for 19 Dec 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

The quest for a refurbished set of boxes continues at the BWW Gibson. So once again the Ragged Rascals made the arduous journey up to Montgomery Blvd. At least there were no artificial roadblocks to contend with this week. The group was 12 strong, even without the presence of the magnificent DUFF. He has ignored BLZBUB’s dictum by letting his personal life to interfere with Trivia. But there were plenty of intelligent players to pick up DUFF’s slack.

Worn-up Round

1. It’s a pitcher of water with a wide spout: EWER.
2. In which field is ‘paywall’ a common term? INTERNET BUSINESS.
3. A super Tuscan is a: RED WINE.
4. On January 1, 2014, Bill de Blasio took the place of: MICHAEL BLOOMBERG.
5. Where did Reggaeton Music originate in the late 1990’s? PUERTO RICO.
6. The Cumberland River is a major waterway in this part of the United States: SOUTH.
7. If you went to a harness track, you’d see a lot of: SULKIES.
8. The word ‘Munchkin’ came to us from the fertile imagination of: L. FRANK BAUM
9. The ‘Cleveland Massacre’ resulted in this man’s control of the U.S. oil industry: JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER.
10. The residents of Rio de Janeiro are called: CARIOCAS.

The team ran through this round with the confidence of new college grads. This asw warranted, as the group went 9 for 10 correct. There was confusion over the designation of where the Mid-Atlantic states end and the South begins on WU 6, causing us to miss the points.

Ground-down Round

1. “Migrant Mother” is the title of a famous ___ by Dorothea Lange. PHOTOGRAPH.
2. The bifana is a staple of this European cuisine: PORTUGAL.
3. In info technology, lossy compression is also known as ___ compression. IRREVERSIBLE.

5. Asprosin is a protein hormone produced by: MAMMALS.
6. Thomas Gresham was the valued financier of this English royal dynasty: TUDORS.
7. What NFL team recently lost the services of quarterback Carson Wentz? PHILADELPHIA EAGLES.
8. In which part of the world do we find the Tajiks? CENTRAL ASIA.
9. Carla Fendi, who passed away earlier this year, was a pioneer in the field of: HIGH FASHION.
10. The large flying fox, despite its name, is one of the largest: BATS.
11. A bisque doll is one made of: PORCELAIN.
12. You’re gobbling up spoonful after spoonful of thick, rich aspic, what are you eating? COW-BONE JELLY. {BLZBUB can’t write a joke better than the alternate choices for answers to this question: Creamed Bear Colon; Minced Horse Entrails; Steeped Possum Kidneys; and Pigeon Gizzard Stew.}

The team got a solid 10 for 12 for 1000 points each. The third-clue saves came on GD’s 2 and 5.

Scatology Round

S1. U.S. BUSINESS v Greek mythology*
*With DUFF absent, we ran from this one like a deer from a brown bear
What was the first certified organic grocer in the United States? WHOLE FOODS MARKET. {SCOOTR}

S2. Chemical elements v WORLD CAPITALS
What city serves as the capital of Suriname? PARAMARIBO. {MEERA}

S3. MILITARY LEADERS v current music
The battle of Berezina was a disastrous defeat for this military leader: NAPOLEON. {CSICOP}

S4. WORLD CAPITALS v U.S. business
The capital city of Zagreb lies on the banks of the ___ River. SAVA. {MEERA (rejecting calls for Danube) and BRICK}

S5. Current music v CHEMICAL ELEMENTS
This silvery-white transition metal has an Atomic Number of 77: IRIDIUM. {BLZBUB and SCOOTR}

S6. Greek mythology (We’re still running) v MILITARY LEADERS
General of the Armies is a rank held by only two men; George Washington and ___. JOHN J. PERSHING. {BRICK with the call, and shooing away calls for Eisenhower.}

The team got all six of these questions with little or no hesitation.

Frightening Round

1. The late Tom Petty was frontman for the: HEARTBREAKERS
2. Salvelinus Alpinus is the scientific name of the: ARTIC CHAR.
3. Who plays the title role in the 2017 movie ‘Roman J. ISRAEL, ESQ,’? DENZEL WASHINGTON.
4. Infrangible is a synonym of: UNBREAKABLE.
5. Clariant is one of the world’s leading ___ companies. CHEMICAL.
6. Where in the world would you find the Perito Moreno Glacier? ARGENTINA.
7. Television host Matt Lauer was unceremoniously fired last month by: NBC

The group managed to get all seven correct, but not without heated debate over the Arctic Char.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Who did President James Polk give a partial pardon to in 1848?
Choices: Aaron Burr, Daniel Boone, Eli Whitney, Ulysses S. Grant, John Fremont
A: JOHN FREMONT. {Ack, gag, snort, wheeze! We got shot by Aaron Burr.}

P2. What famous imaginary place is an island off the coast of South America?
Choices: Shangri-La, Oz, Abyssinia, Sybaris, Utopia
A: UTOPIA. {BLZBUB, tremulously made this call. It was correct.}

P3. “The Four Seasons” is a famous series of violin concertos by:
Choices: Wagner, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Vivaldi, Bernstein
A: ANTONIO VIVALDI. {SCOOTR, with the pre-call}

P4. It is one of the 60 moons of Saturn:
Choices: Sirius, Galatea, Europa, Aldebaran, Mimas
A: MIMAS. {CROEM or ZKEEZX}

P5. Which of these is a Greco-Egyptian god?
Choices: Serapis, Loki, Ishtar, Demeter, Taranis
A: SERAPIS. {Missed it…an early call for Ishtar took us down the Babylonian Garden path.}

This was a worse than average round for us, as we scored only 3 of 5 correct. After the game finished DUFF texted us that he’d also only gotten 3 of the 5 correct. His answer for P1 was also Burr, but he got P5 (Serapis) correct. His other errant answer was (not taking) Mimas as his choice for P4. So in the crying-over-spilled-milk analysis, had he not put family over trivia, the team would have finished 4 for 5 on this round. Bad DUFF! Naughty DUFF!

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: VOCABULARY

Which word describes something circular or oval in shape?

1. Rhomboid
2. Nummular
3. Pinnate
4. Acerose
5. Cretaceous

The order of the eliminations was 3, 4, 1, and 5, leaving #2, NUMMULAR as the correct answer. BLZBUB rapidy called for the elimination of 1 and 5. JAX immediately followed with the elimination of 3, seconds before it was erased from the board. Our moderator, CSICOP, instantly called for a split between 2 and 4, but 4 was the next choice erased. As a result most of the team scored big points on this question.

The top individual scores for the night were 49778, 49776, 49359, 47885, 45995, and 44898 points

The team’s average score for this game was 47,948 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was SIXTH place.

Congratulations and kudos go to the OLD BARN of Portland, OR for their First Place finish with a score of 49,634 points. Our runners-up were at Scooters Pub in Las Vegas, NV with 49189 points. They were followed by the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ at 48989, just edging out Houlihans of Westbury, NY at 48973 points. The Kazoo Krewe at the BWW in Kalamazoo, MI scored 48809. Then came the Ragged Rascals, closely followed by Mad River of NYC, NY with their 47594. Teaser’s of Chicago, the Stained Glass Pub of Elkridge, MD, .and the BWW Blacksburg, VA rounded out the Top Ten.

The Borg were shut out of the Top Ten. HUZZAH!

S2: CHEMICAL ELEMENTS: What is the heaviest element which occurs in nature? URANIUM.

Regrettably, the content crew chose to place Plutonium (the correct answer) in the drop-down box. While Plutonium is not primordial, it occurs naturally through the beta decay of U-238, constantly replenishing Pu-239's trace amounts. Since the half life of U-238 is about 4.5 billion years, this process isn't going to stop anytime soon. Pu-244 has a half-life of 80M years, and our solar system is dusted with the stuff. It can be found on the seabed and falls out of the sky in meteorites.

I can only hope that this particular question didn't prevent any of you from reaching your target score.
