Showdown Recap for 26 Dec 2017 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

BLZBUB should probably change the masthead of these recaps to reflect the continuing unresponsiveness of the BUZZHEADS to the BWW Gibson’s request to repair or replace the Playmakers at our favorite site in Albuquerque. So here we were again at the BWW Montgomery Blvd location, trying to cope with the noise of the dining room while playing Showdown. At least the staff there give us a nook way in the back of the restaurant portion of the establishment with plenty of TV screens to view the questions. Small favors count.

The Ragged Rascals seated 11 players, and fielded 15 Playmakers, one of which would die before the Lightning Round.

This week’s recap will be sparse of details and sophomoric humor, due to the late hour of the day and BLZBUB’s other plans for the evening.

Worn-up Round

1. A cistern is used to store: RAINWATER.
2. What do the initials ‘P.T.’ stand for in the name of circus promoter P.T. Barnum? PHINEAS TAYLOR.
3. ‘Nolo contrendere’ is a ___ term. LEGAL.
4. This part of a bird’s anatomy is used to store food: CROP. {Relax JAX, because MEERA got it.}
5. Which of these items is something a normal person would eat? FRITTATA.
6. The International System of Units is the modern version of the ___ system. METRIC.
7. Which U.S. religious figure was killed by a mob while awaiting trial? JOSEPH SMITH.
8. Another word for ‘nickname’ is: SOBRIQUET.
9. In what eastern city is Brown University located? PROVIDENCE.
10. This incendiary device was used by the Byzantine Empire to defeat invading Arabs: GREEK FIRE.

The team got a glorious 10 for 10 on this round. Remember, this triggers a superstition that the end rounds will be score crushers.

Ground-down Round

1. Where in nature will you find an ablation zone? GLACIER.
2. In what year did David Lloyd George become Prime Minister of England? 1916.
3. Which musical instrument is in the zither family? AUTOHARP.
4. Saint Genevieve serves as this city’s patron saint: PARIS.
5. The state of Utah is home to ___ National Monument. BEARS EARS.
6. By definition, a dissolute person is one who is: IMMORAL. {Oddly, no one pointed to BLZBUB and shouted “visual aid.”}
7. Germany and ___ are the leading producers of Ice Wines. CANADA. {DOH!}
8. Hippocrates believed there were four fluids called: HUMORS.
9. Eliza crossing the ice flows of the Ohio River is a classic scene in this book: UNCLE TOM’S CABIN.
10. The ___ shark is the world’s longest living vertebrate. GREENLAND.
11. In which sport has Shalane Flanagan of the United States attained great prominence? DISTANCE RUNNING. {Damn, splitsville}
12. Mount Agung is one of many volcanoes in: INDONESIA.

The team got 10 of 12 correct, and settled for third-clue saves on #s 7 and 11.

Scatology Round

S1. Vocabulary test v 20TH CENTURY HISTORY
The Czech Republic and Slovakia replaced the dissolved Czechoslovakia on January 1 of: 1993. {DUFF was fastest to this, as usual.}

S2. Ask a lawyer v BIOLOGY
What sort of creature is a filaria? ROUNDWORM {Third-clue save}

S3. TRIP TO SPAIN v religion
On a visit to Spain, what would one definitely see at a corrida? BULLFIGHT. {CROEM, and others knew this.}

S4. Biology v VOCABULARY TEST
To remove or do away with something is to ___ it. EXTIRPATE. {DUFF and CHILL}

S5. RELIGION v ask a lawyer
GANESHA is a major deity in ___ religion. HINDU. {MEERA}

S6. 20TH CENTURY HISTORY v trip to Spain
The 1929 Lateran Pacts were made between Mussolini and the: HOLY SEE. {DUFF}

The team got all six of these, although S2 required a third-clue save to lock it in for minor points.

Frightening Round

1. The DBS Volante is a fancy sports car introduced in 2009 by: ASTON MARTIN.
2. Which commodity is currently selling for about 16 dollars per ounce? SILVER.
3. Where is the U.S. Seventh Fleet headquartered? JAPAN. {HELLFIRE…BLZBUB put the team on Hawaii. This would come back to bite us.}
4. An agreement was signed this year to ban commercial fishing from the Central: ARCTIC OCEAN. {This required a 5-way split.}
5. Brandon Boyd is the lead singer of this American rock band: INCUBUS.
6. Founded in 1975, ___ Associates is one of the world’s largest hedge funds. BRIDGEWATER, {or Blige-water as one of our wags claimed.}
7. What famous structure lies on the south bank of the Yamuna River? TAJ MAHAL.

Jim put us onto the correct seat on the Aston Martin for L1, preventing ejection. The Greek chorus bought silver for L2. The team totally went down with the ship and BLZBUB on L3. Then L4 was a split response. MEERA made a great call on L5. BLZBUB somewhat redeemed himself with correct calls on L6 and L7.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. The diameter of this heavenly body is about 7,520 miles:
Choices: Triton, Mercury, Venus, Phobos, Neptune
A: VENUS. {DUFF beat the Greek chorus to the punch with a pre-call on this one.}

P2. Which U.S. President was a Major General in the Civil War?
Choices: Jackson, Cleveland, Pierce, Hoover, Garfield
A: JAMES GARFIELD. {CSICOP made the instant call.}

P3. This 1956 book by William H. Whyte argued that Americans were basically conformists:
Choices: The Organization Man, Catch-22, Silent Spring, The Giving Tree, Travels with Charley.
A: THE ORGANIZATION MAN

P4. The ‘Goldberg Variations’ is a musical work by Bach that is written for:
Choices: Trombone, Cello, Clarinet, Violin, Harpsichord
A: HARPSICHORD. {DUFF played this tune well.}

P5. Which of these islands is located in the Aegean Sea?
Choices: Corsica, Cyprus, Rhodes, Malta, Sicily
A: RHODES. {Ever the quick navigator, DUFF landed here first.}

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: PAINTINGS (oh boy, feast or famine time)

Which famous painting has a bridge spanning a riverbed in the background?

1. American Gothic
2. The Blue Boy
3. Mona Lisa
4. The Third of May
5. The Starry Night

The order of the eliminations was 5, 2, 4, and 1, leaving #3, MONA LISA as the correct answer. There were no pre-calls on this question. Fortunately DUFF’s mind works fast enough that he could make the proper call in time for many (eight) of the players to get all of the points they wagered.

The top individual scores for the night were 59520, 58988, 58756, 58657, 58461, and 58447.

The team’s average score for this game was 58,804 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was SECOND Place.

Once again, the juggernaut that is Danny K’s of Orange, CA beat our top effort, and it’s not even a tournament game. What’s up with those folks? At any rate, their score of 58,849 nipped the Ragged Rascals by 45 points. Thus, had ANY one of our top six boxes scored 300 points higher, the roles would have been reversed. EGAD!!!

The 3rd place finish went to the Borg infestation on the north side of Albuquerque. They cheated the team at Broadwater, Nepean, ON out of their just position. Nepean’s team scored 54,019 points. Next up were the fearsome team from the Tilted Kilt of Scottsdale, AZ at 53810 points.

Congrats to all who have played fair and square without the use of little silicon buddies this year.

S2: ASK A LAWYER: A document known as a H-1B is useful for someone pursuing: (a divorce, real estate, etc) VISA.

S3: RELIGION: Saint Genenieve is the patron saint of which city? PARIS (the only francophone answer in the drop-down box).

When Spectator's edged past BWW-Montgomery on the 4:30 PST Countdown quiz, it drew a chuckle from me. The guy next to me wanted to know what was so funny. I made mention of the hostile rivalry and added, "I bet that doesn't happen again tonight."

It didn't.
