Showdown Recap for 16 Jan 2018 at BWW in ABQ

The group is beginning to feel a bit like a band of gypsies. The fallback location at the BWW on Montgomery Blvd, has not fared well with respect to the Playmakers. Our heavy-duty usage there has had a noticeable effect on the battery life of the machines. This was exacerbated by the breaking of the electric plug for one of the charging units. The clueless staff there kept putting the Playmakers back into a charger that was no longer connected to the electrical system, thereby killing those poor, hapless Playmakers.

As a result, the Ragged Rascals migrated once again. Our newest venue is the BWW at Iliff Road, which is on the west side of the Rio Grande River, Coincidentally, this is nearly the longest drive that needs to be made to get to play trivia for many members of the team. And it means running the gauntlet of a major choke-point in the traffic for the metro area. However, most of the team took up the challenge and made the arduous trek to the new location. We had 10 people, manning 15 machines for this game.

Worn-up Round

1. Both chiropodists and podiatrists are ___ doctors. FOOT.
2. Ursula K. le Guin is a noted name in the world of: SCIENCE FICTION WRITING.
3. What kind of horse is a bronco? UNTRAINED.
4. 16th Century locksmith Peter Henlein is one of several people credited with inventing the: WATCH.
5. What exactly is a cabal? CONSPIRATORIAL GROUP.

9. What city recently had an amazing snowfall of 34 inches on Christmas Day? ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
10. ‘Marcha Real,’ the National Anthem of ___ has no official lyrics. SPAIN.

The team hit all of these for long distance, a fast start for this game (and triggering the superstition that the final two rounds will be stone-crushers.)

Ground-down Round

1. What historic figure gave himself the title of ‘prefect of morals’? JULIUS CAESAR.
2. Chiapas is a state of Mexico that lies on the country’s border with this country: GUATEMALA.
3. A grimoire is a type of book used by: MAGICIANS.

11. Which element was discovered in 1782 and given its name in 1798? TELLURIUM. {Sherlock would not have proclaimed this ‘elementary.’}
12. In European history, the ___ state was gradually replaced by the territorial state. FEUDAL,

This round was a bit more towards our average. The team got eight of 12 correct, and had third-clue saves on GD’s 5, 6, and 11. GD 8 was a total brain cloud, with most of the team scoring negative points for the first time in months.

Scatology Round

S1. ANCIENT HISTORY v 1980’s TV shows
In A.D. 313, Constantine the Great handed down the Edict of: MILAN. {DUFF handed down the Edict of Correct Answer.}

S2. Obscure awards v MEDICINE
A Tine Test is given to aid in the diagnosis of: TUBERCULOSIS. {BLZBUB}

S3. MOON WALKERS v painters
Of the seven astronauts with ‘the Right Stuff,’ the only one to walk on the moon was: ALAN SHEPARD. {DUFF stepped out lively on this one.}

S4. Medicine v ANCIENT HISTORY
What ruler of Judea was known for both his cruelty and his building projects? HEROD THE GREAT. {DUFF again, avoiding cruelty to and building up our scores.}

S5. PAINTERS v obscure awards
This abstract expressionist painted the Seagram Murals: MARK ROTHKO. {DUFF pre-calls this one.}

S6. 1980’S TV SHOWS v moon walkers
On the 1980’s TV series ‘The A-Team,’ B.A. Baracus had an intense fear of: FLYING. {Greek chorus for the pre-call.}

For this round, the team chose wisely for our talents. Every question saw a pre-call for the correct answer.

Frightening Round

1. The famous speech informally called ‘the Seven Ages of Man’ is from this play: AS YOU LIKE IT.
2. The extinct language AKKADIAN was spoken in Ancient: MESOPOTAMIA. {CHILL got this, because he’s old enough to have been a native-speaker.}

4. Alfred Stieglitz is best known as a 20th Century: PHOTOGRAPHER.
5. Which state is 10,565 square miles in area and has a population of about 6.8 Million? MASSACHUSETTS. {Many went to Delaware, unaware of its lower population.}
6. To remove something is to ___ it. ABLATE.
7. Laurie Anderson is a pioneer in ___ music. ELECTRONIC. {There was a nice call here by MEERA.}
The team mostly missed L6, but none of the other questions posed a serious difficulty for the team.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Which Rudyard Kipling story is set in the United States?
Choices: Kim, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, The Light That Failed, Stalky & Co., Captains Courageous
A: CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. {AW FIDDLE-FARTS! Missed it.}

P2. Where in the universe would you most likely find a Casparian Strip?
Choices: Surface of Mars, Inside a Plant, Race Track, South Pole, Asteroid Belt
A: INSIDE A PLANT. {Chastened by the prior missed query, we opted for a split here.}

P3. Constructed in 1821, the Lachine Canal goes through this major North American city:
Choices: Las Vegas, Montreal, Mexico City, San Francisco, Vancouver
A: MONTREAL. {We got it, only because it sounded French}

P4. In European painting, Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honore Fragonard exemplify this movement:
Choices: Romantic, Baroque, Medieval, Symbolism, Rococo
A: ROCOCO. {DUFF, and probably MEERA, too, get the credit for this one.}

P5. First performed in 1918, “Bluebeard’s Castle” is an opera composed by:
Choices: Arnold Schoenberg, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Johannes Brahms, Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok
A: BELA BARTOK. {BLZBUB called this opera about the wife-murderer with glee (Not GLEE.)}

The team got mauled by this vicious round. Only three boxes stood on 4 of 5 correct at the conclusion. There were another 6 boxes on 3 of 5 correct, and 6 more on only 2 of 5 correct. The pressure is on to do well on the final question.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: FORMER CAPITALS

Until 1983, the city of Abidjan served as this country’s capital:

1. Azerbaijan
2. Ivory Coast
3. Sri Lanka
4. Guyana
5. Somalia

The order of the eliminations was 5, 3, 1, and 4, leaving #2, IVORY COAST as the correct answer. On questions of capitals of nations, we trust MEERA and DUFF with our points. They came through beautifully on this question.
Every damned box got credit for their full wager tonight.
The top individual scores for the night were 49782, 48781, 48580, 47071, 46134, and 44283 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 47438 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was FOURTH Place.

The top team for the night was The Fellowship at BWW Kent, OH with 56,576 points, the only team to break the 50,000 point barrier. The next team on the list was a suspected Borg conglomerate from Las Vegas. Second place thus goes to Mad River of New York City with their 47,560 total. The Ragged Rascals get third place in the wetware-only division, followed closely by Big Guys of Winnipeg, MB at 47,130 points.

Shannon’s of Long Beach, CA
Sooner Legacy of Norman, OK
Moose McGuilicuty of Ottawa, ON
Stadium Café of Dallas, TX, and Tailgate of, Minneapolis MN round out the Top 10.

Thanks and praise to everyone who persevered through this brain-crunching game without the aid of little silicon buddies.

Hopefully 12th was not a choice as well. If that is correct I guess he was both the first and last man on the moon during 17?

Indeed, as Mission COmmander, Cernan was first on the moon on Apollo 17 and the last man off. 12th was not a choice.
