The Ragged Rascals went on the road again this week to play Showdown. They returned to the BWW on the west side of the Rio Grande at the intersection of Coors and Iliff roads. Twelve people manned 17 boxes for the game. It would prove very challenging.

The team played this round to an average that we have established over many years. We got 8 of 12 for the full points, but had to use splits or third-clue saves on four of them. These were #s 1, 2, 9, and 11.

Scatology Round

S1. 2017 NOBEL WINNERS v European cities
Two Americans and one German shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in: PHYSICS {BLZBUB}

Other than the one late save on S5, the team was pre-calling the answers to all of these questions.

Frightening Round

1. The ___ wildfire that began in 2017 is the largest one in California history: THOMAS.

Some of the team turned in an amazing performance on this round, including JAX on F2, CHILL on F3, HEBEGB on F4, and CHILL again on F7. There was a high likelihood of lost points without their answers.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. Kadesh was the scene of a famous battle between the Egyptians and the:
Choices: Vikings, Moors, Hittites, Cossacks, Gauls
A: HITTITES. {DUFF, as per usual got the history question first.}

Choices: Blackbird, Meadowlark, Waxwing, Bluebird, Ibis
A: IBIS. {JAX flew right to this answer.}

Choices: Rich & Poor; Christians-Jews; Left-Right; Men-Women; France-England
A: RICH AND POOR. {DUFF pre-called this answer, presumably because he’s read it.}

Thirteen of our 17 boxes in play finished this round with 5 for 5 correct. The other four got 4 of 5 correct. No it’s ‘finger-crossing’ time while awaiting the Final Strategy query.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: STAGE ACTRESSES

Mame Dennis, Mama Rose, and Madame Arcati are among the stage roles performed by:

1. Patti Lupone
2. Angela Lansbury
3. Cicely Tyson
4. Barbara Cook
5. Glenn Close

The order of the eliminations was 1, 3, 4, and 5, leaving #2, ANGELA LANSBURY as the correct answer. The team was flummoxed by this question. Most preferred Patti Lupone, but since a 5-way split was called few went to it before it was eliminated. Similarly, few went to Lansbury. Still, enough migrated after the first two answers were eliminated to score valuable points on this question.

The top individual scores for the night were 59143, 57631, 56385, 55252, 51002, and 50827 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 55,050 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was THIRD Place.

The top team for this unforgiving game was The Fellowship, with 60,352 points. They were followed by the Old Barn of Portland, OR at 56,846 and the Ragged Rascals in Albuquerque. Fourth, a scant 2 points behind the Rascals, was the bunch at Mad River of New York City at 55,048.

Then came:
Houlihan’s of Westbury, NY @ 51111
Danny K’s of Orange, CA @ 50824
Broadway Bar & Grill of Nepean, ON @ 50755
Tailgate Sports of Minneapolis, MN @ 49522
A suspected Borg unit in Portland, OR
Players of Jacksonville, FL @ 47855,
and BLZBUB’s friends at the BWW in New Orleans @ 47438.

We’ll be looking to beat the usual suspects next week. Cheerio!
