Showdown Recap for 20 Feb 2018 at BWW ABQ

The team was a bit short-handed this past Tuesday, but they soldiered on with 10 players running 15 boxes. It was to be a very challenging night

10. The country of Grenada became independent from ___ rule in 1974. BRITISH.

The team was off to a great start on this round, getting 10 for 10 correct. This game the superstition that early round success leads to late round failure would hold true.

This round was mostly handled easily. There were third-clue saves on GD’s 4 and 5. Oddly enough we correctly answered GD 11 despite no one on the team being under 40 years old.

Scatology Round

S1. Name that (g-d-p-f-v) animal v WORLD GEOGRAPHY

The team got 5 for 6 immediately, but needed the third-clue save on #4.

Frightening Round

6. From which country is Juanes, one of today’s foremost Hispanic singers? COLOMBIA
7. In fashion and art, a pale cobalt blue is commonly known as ___ blue. POWDER.

This round started off nicely, bit it ended in near-disaster. The L6 provoked a 5-way split, while the L7 got off with just a 2-way split. But since these two are the high-value queries for the round, they took a bite out of our scores.

Py-Ram-It Round

P1. What famous writer was born in West Virginia in 1892?
Choices: Erskine Caldwell, Margaret Mitchell, William Faulkner, Bret Harte, Pearl Buck
A: PEARL BUCK {Dammit, we hate starting this round with the dreaded 5-way split.}

P2. The Celestial Masters School was the first organized form of:
Choices: Shintoism, Neo-classicism, Scientology, Zen Buddhism, Taoism
A: TAOISM. {Now the team is stuck on a 2-way split. Dang it!}

A: DEER. {BLZBUB got it.}

P4. What artist was a declared draft dodger during the Franco-Prussian War?

P5. What Canadian city was formed in 1970 by the merging of Fort William and Port Arthur?
Choices: Hamilton. Yellowknife, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Halifax
A: THUNDER BAY. {Disorganized splitting occurred here.}
The team bit the dirt on this round, as foretold by the great success in the first round.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: THE EUROPEAN UNION

Which of these entities is part of the European Union?

1. Labrador
2. Switzerland
3. Galapagos Islands
4. French Guiana
5. Bermuda

The order of the eliminations was 1, 5, 3, and 2, leaving #4, FRENCH GUIANA, as the correct answer. There was an early call for FRENCH GUIANA by BRICK. However, looking at the scores earned by many on the team, this call was either not heeded or it wasn’t heard by the other players. Of the six boxes that scored the highest, only one got 100% of the points wagered. The rest got around 80% of those points.

The top individual scores for the night were 43383, 43002, 42406, 41789, 41439, and 41140 points.
The team average score was 42,196 points.
The team’s ranking was SEVENTEENTH Place.
Kudos go out to The Fellowship for the highest non-Borg score with a 51635 total. They were closely followed by the Kazoo Krew in Kalamazoo, MI at 51564. Those were the only two teams to crack the 50,000 barrier.
Stavros Sports of Calgary, MB; the Grand Slammers at BWW Arlington; Big Guys of Winnipeg, MB; Tailgate of Minneapolis, MN; Scooters of Las Vegas; Whispers of Ottawa, ON; and Pegasus of Toronto, ON rounded out the rest of the Top Ten. A tip of the hat to Mad River of NYC, NY; Beef o’Bradys of Prattville, AL; and West Park Station of Cleveland, OH for bettering the score of the RAGGED RASCALS in Albuquerque.

Last question: Which of these entities is part of the European Union?

The Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador, so not them.

Labrador is part of Canada (since 1949) and also not part of the EU.

Switzerland is not part of the EU, as they, as usual, remain neutral and hoard the gold.

French Guiana is the correct answer chosen, as France has done a Hawaii thing and made French Guiana (as well as Guadeloupe, Martinique and Reunion) a part of what they call Metropolitan France.

And then there is Bermuda, the pondering of which cost us 1-2K points. Bermuda is also correct as a British Overseas Territory with executive authority fully vested in Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith and exercised on Her behalf by the appointed Governor. As Brexit has not yet been completed, Bermuda is also correct.

Is it too much to ask that Buzztime consider its answers? Norway would have been a nice distractor.

Or is Buzztime just too clever for me, actually splitting a hair between an EU-OMR (Outermost Region, French Guiana) and an EU-OCT (Overseas Country and Territory, Bermuda)?

Back to reading the fine print on the Maastricht Treaty.

Thanks, MERKIN, for fleshing out what, in the moment, seemed to me a failure on the part of the content crew to perform due diligence. Your proposed inclusion of Norway would have been beguiling - probably would have lowered the overall scores, but has the merit of being factually accurate.

At the Tailgate, ARKUAT pounced on French Guiana, and my weak protest regarding Bermuda was laughed down when that option was our first elimination.

Congratulations to LILJOL, who succeeded in going rogue against the Rascals on five of six Scattergories. I'm embarrassed not to recall S2: Foreign Foods. Apparently The Tailgate digested that question without so much as a fart.

I can't remember exactly what the first food question was--my best guess is that it asked how meat served Galantine style is prepared. What I do know is that the answer was "de-boned and stuffed."
