Showdown Recap for 19 Jun 2018 at BWW Gibson in ABQ

[BLZBUB needs help with the Pyramid Round Questions. They didn't make it onto the video record.]

The Ragged Rascals arrived thirteen strong to play Bust-Your-Brainbox once again. There would be 17 working Playmakers active for this game. This night would feature a lot of side discussions, but it is unclear whether or not it affected team play. The game would prove rather difficult in some rounds, while almost trivial in others.

Worn-out Round

1. Something described as facile would be: EASY. {As was this question.}
2. The Klondike is a region of this part of Canada: YUKON TERRITORY.
3. The Shroud of ___ is a linen cloth said to bear the image of Christ. TURIN. {Amazingly the team was not stuck by lightning immediately after the jokes this question spawned were finished.}
4. Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Falmouth are places you will find on: CAPE COD.
5. Where would you most likely find a greenskeeper? GOLF COURSE.
6. A physics professor could teach you all about the Planck: CONSTANT.
7. Which of these choices would an Anglophile be most interested in? TEA AND CRUMPETS.
8. The sari is a woman’s garment that is a symbol of style and grace in: INDIA.
9. Varieties of pork chops include rib, loin, sirloin, and: BLADE.
10. In the 16th and 17th Centuries, the ___ Empire was at its peak. OTTOMAN.

The team went 10 for 10 on this round, but does this trigger the “early success, late demise” superstition for this game?

Ground-down Round

1. Which musical direction dictates music to be played moderately fast? ALLEGRETTO.
2. Aconite, daphne, and Naked Lady are deadly: FLOWERING PLANTS.
3. “The Vanity Fair Diaries,” by ___, chronicles the years of 1983 to 1992. TINA BROWN. {Third-clue save}
4. In which part of the U.S. was the Creek War fought? SOUTHEAST.
5. Which of these things is a type of rock? GANISTER. {Another third-clue save}
6. The key component of Silly Putty is ___ acid. BORIC.
7. Which organization has its headquarters in the Baxter Building? FANTASTIC FOUR.
8. Which of these is a breed of sheep? POLLED DORSET. {Third-clue save}
9. The Webb Ellis Cup is a coveted trophy in the sport of: RUGBY. {Another third-clue save}
10. ‘A Dance to the Music of ___’ is a series of 12 novels by Anthony Powell. TIME. {Third-clue save}
11. In what century did construction on China’s Grand Canal begin? 5TH CENTURY A.D. {Yet another third-clue save}
12. Which famous work of art is by Edvard Eriksen? THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Fortunately, we finished that round on an up note, because taking six saves by the third clue is discouraging.

Scatology Round

S1. PAINTINGS v world cities
‘Grain Field’ is an impressionist painting done in the 1870’s by : BERTHE MORISOT {ACK! A third-clue save to begin this round does not auger well.}

S2. HAVE A COOKIE v litch-raw-chure
Two currently popular brands of gourmet cookies are ‘Famous Amos’ and: MRS. FIELDS. {JAX}

S3. Psychology v MOVIE TIME
In the movie “Hostiles,” Christian Bale plays a: U.S. ARMY OFFICER {HEBEGB/REAPER}

S4. Litch-raw-chure v PAINTINGS
The last painting done by Italian Master Rafael was: THE TRANSFIGURATION. {Yet another third-clue save}

S5. MOVIE TIME v have a cookie
“The Death Cure” is the latest installment in the ___ film series. MAZE RUNNER. {REAPER}

S6. WORLD CITIES v psychology
Palmyra is a city in this Middle Eastern country: SYRIA. {Greek chorus}

This round was less than stellar. The team only got 4 of 6 for the full points.

Frightening Round

1. What country recently changed its name to ‘Eswatini’? SWAZILAND.
2. Who was ‘Superrappin’’ in a 1979 song? GRANDMASTER FLASH. {HEBEGB!!!}
3. Kingfisher is a popular brand of beer made in: INDIA.
4. Which celebrity chef committed suicide this month? ANTHONY BOURDAIN.
5. By what name was EBay originally known when it was founded in 1995? AUCTION WEB. {Maybe that’s why a name change was in order.}
6. Lee Childs (sic Buzzie, sic) created and continues to feature this hero in his novels: JACK REACHER. {The nom de plume is Lee CHILD, not Childs, dumbasses.}
7. In military time, 2100 hours is: 9 P.M.

The team was grateful for an unbroken string of correct answers on this round. It was salve for the wounds inflicted in Scatology.

Py-Ram-It Round {Questions not recorded, and no sketchy notes, only sketchy memories.}

P1. OXYGENATION

P2. WORDSWORTH

P3. What color are the eyes of a tiger?
YELLOW

P4. What humanitarian organization was founded in 1866?
ASPCA

P5. Which of these islands lies farthest South:
FIJI

The Ragged Rascals finished this round with five boxes on 5 of 5 correct for this round. The rest of the boxes finished with 4 of 5 correct.

FINAL TRAGEDY
Topic: COMPOSERS

Who gained fame by composing some 100 operettas?

1. Philip Glass
2. Frederic Chopin
3. Jacques Offenbach
4. Modest Mussorgsky
5. Hans Holbein

The order of the eliminations was 1, 5, 2, and 4, leaving #3, JACQUES OFFENBACH, as the correct answer. There was a slight delay until DUFF called this answer definitively. The top boxes lost from 5 to 12% of the points wagered.

The top individual scores for the night were 56803, 53442, 52784, 52108, 50729, and 49554 points.

The team’s average score for this game was 52,570 points.

The Ragged Rascals’ systemwide ranking was SIXTEENTH Place overall and THIRTEENTH in the wetware-only competition.

Congrats to this week’s champion of all wet-ware only locations:
Houlihans of Westbury, NY @ 59563, followed by
BWW KENT, OH (The Fellowship) @ 59457, and
Stained Glass Pub of Elkridge, MD @ 58912.
