Answers:

1. Diamond [Myfanwy (SPRAJO) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullinan_Diamond ]

2. Dan Brown [Myfanwy pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da_Vinci_Code ]

3. Tulsa [We at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON mostly guessed this (Stillwater is in Minnesota, Fort Smith in Arkansas and Montana); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa,_Oklahoma ]

4. Shrimp [I (REACH, LESTER) called this from "Mantis" and "Brine"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantis_shrimp , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brine_shrimp and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteleg_shrimp ]

5. Yachtsman [Richard (ACE2) called this one; see https://www.yachtingworld.com/special-r ... enon-66269 ]

6. Lucy [I pre-called this, pointing out that it was Donald Johanson, not the Leakeys, who discovered Lucy. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_(Australopithecus) ]

7. Carrie [We correctly guessed this. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rage:_Carrie_2 ]

8. Dutch [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KLM ]

9. Bird [I called this one, from "Indigo bunting"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigo_bunting ]

10. Kuala Lumpur [Myfanwy pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronas_Towers ]

11. Connecticut [I overrode wrong calls by deducing that a Charter Oak would be in a New England state which was settled by British immigrants long before Independence. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_Oak ]

12. Henry Rush [Andrew F (KVETA, DR LUV) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Close_for_Comfort ]

13. Madrid [Richard (ACE2) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Madr ... n_bombings ]

14. Transposons [I called this one, explaining that Barbara McClintock won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Medicine (unshared) for her work on jumping genes which she deduced from patterns of coloured kernels on corn (maize) and their chromosomes, as seen when stained under the microscope. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transposable_element and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_McClintock .]

15. Tumid [I called this one; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/tumid ]

16. Ohio [I called this as a guess; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutherford_B._Hayes ]

17. Arctic [We missed this one (perhaps not thinking of wildlife in the Arctic); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Na ... ife_Refuge ]

18. Napoleon III [Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sedan ]

19. Remoulade [Myfanwy called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remoulade ]

20. Moosehead [Dave called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moosehead_Lake ]

21. Foamer [We all missed this one (an Americanism? But how popular?), going with "Devo" (perhaps as a contraction of "Devotee"); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railfan .]

22. The Bad Seed [I suggested this, as the 1956 film starring cute blonde Patty McCormack as a child sociopath is a must-see; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bad_Seed_(1956_film) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty_McCormack . I mentioned that at the end of the film (Spoiler Alert!!!) she is killed by a lightning strike. In the 1954 book, she gets away with her murders; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bad_Seed . The story was controversial in the mid-1950s because the thesis is that genes (nature), not nurture, can produce a sociopath/psychopath. On the other hand, after WWII and the defeat of Hitler and everything he stood for, the Civil Rights movement in the USA largely justified equalizing opportunities (environments) in order to reduce crime and create well-behaved, productive citizens. Cultural relativism had been the credo of pioneer anthropologist Franz Boas and his students, including the famous Margaret Mead (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Boas and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Mead ). And the belief was that we are the products of our environments, so that the idea of the "bad seed" was akin to the discredited eugenics movement.
By the 1990s, Canadian psychologist Robert Hare argued in his book "Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us" that there is a small fraction (about 1%) of the general population that lack empathy, as part of their nature. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_D._Hare . Although 1% is small, in a general population of 300 million, that still means 3 million psychopaths. Hare points out that psychopaths do not necessarily kill people. Stupid psychopaths get caught and end up in jail, but smart psychopaths are more likely to defraud others, commit white collar crimes, and manipulate others to gain personal fortunes (e.g. in real estate or in investment banks and the stock market) or rise to power in major corporations (to become CEOs) or in politics (he smiled when asked if it might mean becoming Prime Minister of Canada (or President of the USA?) , and he refused to answer on camera). Without Conscience means you can lie without being troubled, and can say two contradictory things in the same sentence. This can give you a competitive advantage over people who hold back so as not to hurt others, or on ethical principles.
After this SHOWDOWN Game, we discussed a famous Canadian couple, Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Bernardo and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karla_Homolka . In addition to raping and murdering 3 young girls, Paul was also discovered to be the Scarborough Rapist. He explained how his DNA was found inside the body of one rape victim thus: he had had consensual sex with another woman, using a condom, and had put the used condom inside his jacket pocket, and placed the jacket in his car. The true rapist must have broken into his car, and used the contents of the used condom to frame him! Such is the mind of a psychopath - when caught, say anything, however implausible, in the hope that this will be believed. If not believed, then say something else; just make things up, since there is no feeling of guilt or shame when lying or saying total contradictions.
Because males vary much more than females, abnormal females who are psychopaths are relatively rare. By chance, Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo met, and instantly clicked, a meeting of like minds. Karla eventually wanted to get married to Paul, but Paul wanted a virgin (which Karla was not). So Karla participated in the drugging and raping of her beautiful younger sister so that Paul would have his sex with a virgin, removing the impediment to Karla's desired marriage. Tammy died when she choked on her own vomit.
One of Paul & Karla's victims was 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy. Leslie's mom had locked her out of the house for breaking curfew, and by chance, Paul found Leslie wandering around a deserted street in the early morning. She was abducted, raped and murdered, and her body was cut up with a circular saw, the body parts encased in concrete and dumped into a shallow body of water. Parts sticking out of the concrete led to their discovery. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Leslie_Mahaffy .
You can read more at https://archive.macleans.ca/article/199 ... told-story .
I include this case in this discussion because Paul Bernardo's father had been imprisoned for sex crimes (although this fact and the circumstances were not admissible in our courts of law). In the story of The Bad Seed, the mother of Rhoda' mom had been executed for being a serial killer.]

23.(a) Lion [Richard called this, and I mentioned the red lion rampant in the middle of the flag (from Scotland, "Nova Scotia"="New Scotland"). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Nova_Scotia ]

24.(a) Procyon [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procyon ]

25.(a) Luxembourg [We totally missed this one, a really obscure one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxembour ... tion,_2018 ]

26.(a) Joni Mitchell [I split my votes between Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_to_California , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IZ-jATBq9A and https://www.songfacts.com/facts/led-zep ... california ]

27.(a) Banksy [Myfanwy pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_with_Balloon ]

28.(a) Saint John [Andrew F called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Joh ... y_of_Fundy) ]

29. Polly Pocket [I split my votes, guessing right as LESTER; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly_Pocket ]

30. Blues Traveler [I split my votes, guessing right as LESTER; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_Traveler and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-yLH5wcEoQ for "Run Around", and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdz5kCaCRFM for "Hook".]

31. Iowa [I split my votes, guessing right as LESTER; see the section "U.S. settlement and statehood, 1830-1860" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa ]

32. Home goods [Patrick (MRRED) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayfair ]

33. Wales [Myfanwy, proud of her Welsh heritage, pre-called this one right away! See http://www.castlewales.com/ ]

34. Hyperhidrosis [We deduced this from "hyper"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhidrosis ]

35. 605 [Despite splits, we all missed our guesses, failing to get 2000 Points on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Needle ]

36. Machine Gun Kelly [I guessed this as LESTER; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Gun_Kelly ]

37. Ecuador [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador ]

38. Robert Bunsen [I pre-called this one; see the section "History" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubidium ]

39. Theodore Dreiser [I split my votes on this one, getting it right as LESTER; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_American_Tragedy ]

40. Positivism [I called for a split with this and "Naturism", getting it right as LESTER; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auguste_Comte . So 5 out of 5 on the Pyramid Round left LESTER with 36,078 Points, with the potential of a Player score of 54,117 Points if the full 50% Bonus were earned on the Final Question, Q41.]

41. Tortoise [See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoise . Because the big screen TVs could not be logged on to ntn Trivia at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON , we were forced to watch our tablet screens (traditionally a fraction of a second slower to respond than the big screen TV displays). To record the games for these recaps, I placed my camcorder off to the end of the table, focussed on LESTER's tablet. Although my tablet as REACH was a fraction of a second slower than LESTER's, it was right in front of me and in my hands, so I watched it throughout the game. Unfortunately the screen froze before the Choices appeared, and by the time others were suggesting possible Answers, I still had not looked at the Choices listed on LESTER's tablet. So I lost almost all possible Bonus Points for this Question. GRRRR!!!! At least we weren't playing the Championship Game in the Sandbag tournament, having been edged out by Mad River in last week's Tournament Semi-Final, so our mediocre #46 Site ranking was not a total embarrassment. We were also missing regulars Chris (CEEZED, KAYAED), Phil (BSLXPN), Andrew C (GRYFON, GRZLDA) and former regulars at the "New Edinburgh Pub" Wendy (EKWTSM, ANIL K) and Dai (BLADOR, DAI). Congratulations to the Mad River, New York NY team which ended up #8 Site with an average of 45,722 Points on their best 6 Player scores, edging out #10 Site Teaser's, Chicago IL (45,399 Points).]

I believe that Stillwater would be considered north central Oklahoma, but barely. It could be debatable.

I agree. I did mention to the team that both could be considered northeast, but Tulsa was more east than Stillwater. Plus, I pre called Tulsa, just trying to be funny.

To LILJOL and GOGETEM: Thanks for the info on Stillwater OK. During the game, I split my two boards (REACH, LESTER) between Tulsa and Stillwater because somewhere in my memory banks there was some fuzzy connection to Stillwater OK (maybe from some US College game), but I didn't say anything to the others because the call had been made for Tulsa. I had no idea where in OK Tulsa or Stillwater were located, and I was covering the possibility that Stillwater was in the NE and Tulsa elsewhere.

I mentioned only Minnesota in the Answer to Q3 because a Google search for "Stillwater" produced Stillwater, Minnesota first, and I did not go far enough down the first page to see an entry for Stillwater OK. Google can therefore bias searches on controversial issues by simply relegating sites that the Masters of the Universe dislike to the 6th page or further down....

REACH, you're correct about a sports game. The Oklahoma State Cowboys team is located in Stillwater. I do believe that another Oklahoma team located south in Norman usually doesn't recognize their existence.
