Answers:

1. Dumpster [see https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/dumpster+fire ]

3. Elegy [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elegy ]

4. Panera [Myfanwy (SPRAJO) and Richard (ACE) were among those calling this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panera_Bread ]

5. Golf course [see the section "Fairway and rough" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golf_course ]

6. Dallas [We all missed this one, as we were trying to clear our minds of Grande Prairie, Alberta, which was not one of the Choices. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prairie,_Texas and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grande_Prairie .]

7. Mike Fink [I think Chris (CEEZED, KAYZED) or Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Fink ]

10. Musician [I explained that it is a guitar pick; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plectrum ]

11. Eat it [I actually called a Japanese Question right! See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakutori (note the correct spelling). Unfortunately, my tablet as LESTER froze, and I couldn't enter the right answer.]

12. Athenian hill [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Areopagus . I knew this from having read Milton's "Areopagitica", a 1644 essay on free speech; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Areopagitica .]

13. Alaska [I wrongly pre-called "Yukon" because Mt. Fairweather is in the north of BC, and the Choice "Alaska" was close enough; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Fairweather ]

14. Persiflage [I guessed right on this one; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/persiflage ]

15. 22 [Patrick (MRRED) pre-called this one; see the section "Structure - Bones" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skull ]

17. Allegiant [I called this because it resembled and rhymed with the previous two titles; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegiant_(novel)) . My tablet as LESTER froze, and I couldn't enter the answer.]

18. Australia [Except for Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) and Joe (REBEL) who got 1000 Points, we went first with Jamaica, losing most of the Points on this Question. My tablet as LESTER froze again, so I couldn't make the early split. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Deakin (1856-1919; in office 1903-04, 1905-06, 1909-10) , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Watson (1867-1941; in office, 1904) , and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Reid (1845-1918; in office 1904-05). ]

19. Monkeys [Chris and I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-and-white_colobus ]

20. Dark Knight [We wrongly went with "Lord of the Rings" (Howard Shore) because we didn't know there was a Dark Knight trilogy, losing most of the Points on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_Trilogy and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Zimmer ]

21. Armenia [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerevan ]

22. Rip van Winkle [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rip_Van_Winkle ]

23.(a) Oliver Cromwell [From "Worcester", I pre-called "English Civil War" as a guess; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Worcester .]

24.(a) Plasmid [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasmid ]

25.(a) Brooklyn Nine-Nine [Chris called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Nine-Nine ]

27.(a) Modern Family [We split our guesses on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Family ]

28.(a) Richard Ford [Most of us, except me, got most of the Points for this one; see the section "Early career" and "Mid-career and acclaim" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Ford ]

Round winner: Chris as KAYZED.

36. John Tyler [Because of a wrong call for Andrew Jackson, all but I as LESTER missed this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tyler . Phil (BSLXPN) would probably have got this, but couldn't make it today.]

37. Barnaby Rudge [I went with the Dickens novel I had never heard of, because the other Choices did not include Gordon Riots; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnaby_Rudge ]

38. Brussels [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Parliament ]

39. Asparagus [Because of wrong calls, we all missed this one, but as soon as I saw the right answer, I immediately recognized "asparagine" as an amino acid, which I should have deduced. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amino_acid and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagine .]

40. Beethoven [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violin_So ... (Beethoven)) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COGcCBJAC6l (0:49-45:01).

Round Winner: LESTER (4/5 Right), but because of the previous history of frozen screens, still a mediocre total score.

41. 14 [We guessed, some right, but mostly wrong. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borders_of_China ]

The link in the answer to Q40 should have read https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COGcCBJAC6I (does anyone know how to get one's computer to distinguish between capital "I" and small letter "l" when searching YouTube links? I usually have to try both spellings to get it right, and forgot to correct my notes before typing this one.)

In Q40, "Kreuzer" should have been spelled "Kreutzer" ("Kreuz"="cross" in German).

Douglas ADAMS, not ADKINS. I hate to be a scold, LILJOL, but you spend too much time dieting and too little hitch-hiking.

28b: PHILOSOPHERS: His 'Prison Notebooks' were a major contribution to 20th C political theory: Antonio Gramsci. (There were some interesting distractors, most notably Adolf Hitler and Primo Levi.)

Less certainly (and both of these are from memory, which in my neighborhood has a short half life)

27b: SCIENCE: Which of the following is classified as a fungus? Yeast, as opposed to Amoeba or Plankton, e.g.

Like REACH, I stumbled a bit with (14) Persiflage and (33) Expatiating. For me, both words connote speech, rather than writing. One is led to imagine that the inner sanctum of the temple where these questions are written is a strangely silent place.
