6. Siberia [Andrew C (GRYFON) and others pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamchatka_Peninsula ]

7. Yellow vest [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_vests_movement ]

8. Yawl [Andrew C and I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yawl ]

9. Archduke [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavrilo_Princip ]

10. Spaniard [I explained "demonym" is the name of a people, so most of us ended up with the full 5000 Points for this Round; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demonym ]

11. Eyelids [I called this one, but there was a slight delay after I entered my guess; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myasthenia_gravis ]

12. J.Crew [I guessed right on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.Crew ]

13. Drink it [Richard (ACE) and I couldn't translate the German "Einspanner", but I guessed right anyway; see https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dicti ... einspanner ]

14. Plant [I pre-called "Herb", and everyone got this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennel ]

15. South Atlantic [Jean (LESTER) pre-called this one first; see https://globalnews.ca/news/4672970/miss ... rine-found ]

16. Captain of my Soul [Andrew C (GRYFON) called this one, from his knowledge that Nelson Mandela used the poem for inspiration while imprisoned on Robben Island; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus and https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/Invictus . This might also have been the inspiration for Prince Harry's "Invictus Games"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus_Games . ]

17. Invective [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/invective ]

18. Chili peppers [Sue (SWIFT) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrabbiata_sauce ]

19. 1642 [I pre-called "1600s"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Burgesses ]

20. Childbirth [I couldn't see any connection between "Light" (cf. "Lucid") and Childbirth, but the other Choices were even worse, so I guessed this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucina_(mythology) ]

21. The Handmaid's Tale [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid's_Tale ]

22. Australia [I think Myfanwy (SPRAJO) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Commonwealth_Games ]

23.(a) Netherlands [A wrong pre-call for "Portugal" hurt us all except for Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) who got full Points for this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Brabant ]

24.(a) Wind [A suggestion for "Anemone" distracted us, but then I recognized "Anemometer" as the device that measures wind speed; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemophily and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemometer . I still couldn't see the connection to the sea Anemone, until I Googled "Anemone" and realized that the sea Anemone is named after the flower Anemone which is also known as the Windflower; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/anemone .]

25.(a) Luxury fashion house [Myfanwy, Sue, Andrew C and others knew this; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burberry ]

26.(a) Pate [We totally missed this one, first going with "Meatloaf" because of the spread-out ground meat, and then "Croquette" for the same reason; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rillettes ]

27.(a) Animal suborder [We all missed this one, as I guessed that "Macropod"="Big Foot" might refer to clams, which are Marine invertebrates. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macropods (which are marsupials like kangaroos and wallabies) and http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Macropod . For the "powerful burrowing foot" of a clam, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam and for a 0:55 video of the foot in action, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsBVvlJjNtc for "clam digs into sand". ]

28.(a) Mexican [Myfanwy pre-called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cozumel ]

29. Smash Mouth [Phil (BSLXPN) and Patrick (MRRED) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smash_Mouth , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Star_(song) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walkin'_on_the_Sun . For performances of these songs, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_jWHffIx5E for "All Star" (1999) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQj--Kjn0z8 for "Walkin' on the Sun" (1997) .]

30. Six ants [Chris called this in time (6x6 = 36) , whereas 4 spiders have 4x8 = 32 legs, 7 horses have 7x4 = 28 legs, 5 grasshoppers have 5x6 = 30 legs, and 15 humans have 15x2 = 30 legs]

31. 27,240,000 [I guessed right on this truly useless Question (almost as pointless as asking for the 15th telephone number on p.42 of the New York City telephone directory of 1963); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Ocean .]

32. Rose [Andrew C pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_(1997_film) ]

33. Sugarcane [I and most of the others guessed wrong on this one; see https://faridbinmasood.wordpress.com/fo ... ane-juice/ ]

34. Hannibal [Jean (LESTER) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannibal_(TV_series) ]

35. Bennu [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/101955_Bennu ]

36. Tiberius [I called this one (from c. 30 AD); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius ]

37. Ukraine [Andrew C called this one as a guess; the other Choice we considered was Spain. Ukraine (603,628 sq km; 233,062 sq. mi.) is only slightly larger than Spain (505,990 sq km; 195,360 sq. mi.); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain . When I Googled Morocco, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco said its area is 710,850 sq km; 274,460 sq. mi., larger than Ukraine. However, this total must include the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara (266,000 sq km; 103,000 sq. mi.) so an older reference source might have put Morocco behind Ukraine and Spain. Another useless Question, and even contentious. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecuador and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia , these are smaller areas (283,561 sq km; 109,484 sq. mi.) and (330,803 sq km; 127,724 sq. mi.) respectively.]

38. Krupp family [Jean pre-called this one; see the section "Gustav's era" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krupp .]

39. Scarlet Pimpernel [Andrew C called this one, explaining that Jean Valjean didn't have a wife, so he, Chris, Jean, Myfanwy, Patrick and Phil ended up with 4 of the 5 Pyramid Round Questions right, for 7000 Points. I and several others went with Jean Valjean, ending up with 3 of 5 Pyramid Round Questions right, for only 4000 Points out of 12000. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scarlet_Pimpernel .]

40. Chipmunk [We all got wiped out on this one; according to the section "Diet" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipmunk , it eats insects and small frogs, etc. in addition to seeds, nuts, etc. We went with "Hyena"; according to https://www.quora.com/Are-Hyenas-omnivo ... carnivores , they are omnivores, but without concrete examples, it is not clear whether scavenging is considered part of omnivorous behaviour instead of carnivorous. However, according to https://animals.mom.me/hyenas-diet-3337.html , the Striped Hyena Diet includes fruit, the Brown Hyena Diet includes melon, and the Spotted Hyena is referred to as "These omnivores". So maybe another bad Question, but perhaps equally punishing for all the good Sites.
I also mentioned that mother rabbits eat the placentas after giving birth, to recycle nutrients and to reduce smells, so they are not strictly herbivores. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0iHCv_bG_o and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJiBPuPIPYI and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placentophagy .]

41. Hydrogen [A bad pre-call for "Methane" diverted most boards, but I called for "Hydrogen", especially as a split. In fact, the gas giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are mostly hydrogen and helium. See the section "Composition" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Uranus which states that methane is in fact #3 in abundance at approx. 2.3%. The helium/hydrogen ratio by number of molecules is 0.152 +/- 0.033 , and since the He gas molecule at 4 g/mol is twice the 2 g/mol for H2 gas, the mass ratio of helium/hydrogen is higher by a factor of 2, at 0.304/1. But hydrogen is still the most abundant gas by either measure. By mass, the hydrogen/(hydrogen + helium) ratio would be 1/1.304, and so the percent by mass hydrogen would be approx. 100/1.304 = 77%.

Note that the usually abundances of gases in the Earth's dry atmosphere (21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, 1% argon) are proportional to the number of molecules, which by Avogadro's Hypothesis means they are proportional to volumes at the same pressure and temperature. Hence CO2 abundance in the Earth's atmosphere is now expressed as 410 ppmv (parts per million by volume), or 0.04% by volume. OTOH, exhaled air is approx. 3% CO2 by volume, a factor of 75 times greater. ]

I also post the GLORY DAZE Q&A in the appropriate folder at http://www.scaratings.com , but I'll have to get some sleep before I type up this week's Q&A.

LILJOL, once again, went 6/6 on the Pick-Your-Poison Round. It must have required heroic courage for him to throw his body on these two grenades. I've heard of Kanye West and Chance the Rapper, and only those two among all the musical references, but help me here - why are these ephemera in Showdown?

There are Carnivores, there are Omnivores, and there are Opportunists. I had to delete a couple of lame jokes from this entry - a failed attempt to cheer myself up after making the same mistake that Buster's did. If in fact we did err: I'm unconvinced.
