Answers:

1. Hawaii [I (REACH) pre-called this one first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muumuu ]

2. Mickey Mouse [Except for Jean (LESTER) who recognized that this was the only Disney creation, we at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON ALLl got confused by wrong calls (in my case, I thought UB IWERKS was some corporate giant collaborating with Disney on some update of a classic cartoon character); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ub_Iwerks ]

3. Canada [Some advantage to Canadian Sites on this Question; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banff_National_Park ]

4. Motor neuron [Andrew C (GRYFON) called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyotroph ... _sclerosis ]

5. Fish [I pre-called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrod ]

6. Building [I pre-called "Tower"="Building"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Khalifa ]

7. Edgar Allan Poe [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_W ... hort_story) ]

8. Henry Deringer [after pre-calls for "Colt" and "Smith & Wesson", we all recognized this, if not the spelling of Derringer; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Deringer ]

9. Oklahoma [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma ]

10. Trite remark [GRYFON called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platitude ]

Winner of Warm-up Round, with 5000 Points: LESTER

11. Jose de San Martin [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_de_San_Martin ]

12. Tennessee [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumberland_Gap ]

13. Google [We guessed wrong on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkut ]

14. Lacrosse [Another Question favouring Canadians; see https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/act ... age-1.html and the section "History" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacrosse (the name of the sport is from the French who were the first Europeans to explore Canada and the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers from the north - see Marquette & Joliet, Lasalle). I remember at age 10 being taught the history of the Fall of Fort Michilimackinac in Michigan: after the English victory over the French in North America in the Seven Years' War (The French and Indian War), the fort was in the hands of the English who were not as well-liked by the aboriginals as the French who intermarried with them (in accord with "Champlain's Dream" by American historian David Hackett Fischer; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champlain's_Dream ). On June 2, 1763, the Ojibwe staged a game of lacrosse outside the fort, deliberately threw the ball over the walls, and entered the fort to retrieve the ball and then proceeded to kill most of the English inhabitants; see the section "History" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Michilimackinac .

Older Canadians might also know that Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto on TV's "The Lone Ranger", first gained renown as a lacrosse player; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Silverheels .]

15. Nougat [Chris (KAYZED) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montelimar . Normally, Chris also plays another tablet as CEEZED, but gave his up to a player from another group at Buster's Bar (about 10-15 or so tablets had low batteries or would freeze or conk out mid-game, an irritating problem most weeks). ]

16. L.A. Confidential [As "The Black Dahlia" was based on an infamous murder in the L.A. area, we correctly guessed this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Ellroy ]

17. Cavatappi [We needed Clues on this one to correct our initial guesses; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavatappi ]

18. Feigned [GRYFON called this first; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/feigned ]

19. Pawn shop [We missed most of the points on this one. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_of_piety ]

20. Leatherjacket [Except for LESTER who got all 1000 Points, and GRYFON who got 651 Points, the rest of us got mediocre scores less than 200 or so Points; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly ]

21. Dentistry [We deduced this from "Prosthetics" and "dontics"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosthodontics ]

22. Reducing fever [GRYFON pre-called "fever" from "febr"; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/febrifuge ]

Winner of Countdown Round: GRYFON

23.(a) Chatter [I called this from "Nattering nabobs of negativism", a phrase uttered by Vice-President Spiro Agnew in 1970 (written by speechwriter William Safire); see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/natter and https://politicaldictionary.com/words/n ... egativism/ from a time when the White House hated the press, the enemies of the people]

24.(a) Latakia [LESTER called this one, since he enjoys cigars, and he knew that a certain Syrian tobacco is named after the port city; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latakia and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latakia_(tobacco) ]

25.(a) Schlitz [I pre-called this, but since I rarely drink alcohol, and never when I drive, I was ignored and most of the others guessed Pabst. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Sc ... ng_Company . While typing this, I remembered that Laverne and Shirley in the TV series worked for Shotz beer in Milwaukee, and Penny Marshall (Laverne) had just died at age 75; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laverne_and_Shirley ]

26.(a) Wicked [We needed Clues for this one, so missed most of the Points, except for Andrew F (KAY 1000 Points; DR LUV 831) and LESTER (762) ; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/flagitious . The etymology is from the Latin "flagrum"="whip, lash, scourge", the origin of "flagella"=whip-like hairs on unicellular organisms, and "flagellation" of criminals and penitents, punishment for the wicked. ]

27.(a) Baja California [Myfanwy (SPRAJO) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensenada,_Baja_California ]

28.(a) Angolan [After a bit of a delay considering and rejecting "Lebanese", which wasn't one of the Choices and of the wrong time period anyway, GRYFON called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angolan_Civil_War (1975-2002). ]

Winner of Category Round: Dave (as YELDOR)

29. Albert King [Andrew F (DR LUV, KAY) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_Unde ... Sign_(song) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Py37G9qsfY .]

30. Nebraska [Some of us guessed right on this one; I didn't. See the section "History" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska ]

31. Spain [Most of us guessed right on this one; Chris regretted switching to "Australia" at the last second. See https://news.besocialscene.com/wine-con ... ng-nations ]

32. Golden retriever [Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) pre-called "Dog", and several called the right answer; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Bud ]

33. Finland [Some of us were quick enough to get this in 7 seconds or less; I was not. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia and enlarge the map. ]

34. 1931 [I pre-called "late 1920s or early Depression", close enough. See the section "National anthem" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner ]

35. Doctor Strange [Chris called this in time (less than 4 seconds); see the section "Fictional character biography" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Strange ]

Round winners: LESTER, ACE, KAY, DR LUV, SPRAJO with a perfect 7500 Points

36. Michael Faraday [I pre-called this one; see the section "Adult life" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Faraday ]

37. Thetis [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thetis ]

38. Vicuna [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicuna ]

39. Brutus [I pre-called "Casca was one of the conspirators in "Julius Caesar" ", and Sue (ALWAL) noted that Brutus was the only Choice from "Julius Caesar"; see https://www.sparknotes.com/nofear/shake ... r/page_24/ ]

40. Reflex [I pre-called this one; see https://www.mathsisfun.com/reflex.html ]

Round winners: We all got 5 out of 5 Right in this Round, for 12000 Points each.

41. Guy de Maupassant [see the end of the section "Biography" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_de_Maupassant . The top 6 Player scores at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON were:

Well, hell...

23.(b) THIS MEANS WAR! - The Anglo-_____ War lasted from 1585 to 1604.
(Greco, Dutch, SPANISH, German, Swiss)

24.(b) FJTLAK - Megastar FJTLAK is a proud native of:

28.(b) PATRON SAINTS - Saint Sarah is the patron saint of this ethnic group:

This lil old grump's ability to choose more than these three was destroyed by the annoying appearance of a visiting player shortly after the Countdown Round started.

27(b): Beer Slogans: It is/was (paraphrasing) a slogan for Corona. The correct answer wasn't "Find Your Beach", but something else entirely. I got 800-900 points on the question, and even in hindsight couldn't recall the ad campaign. Now, revisiting the question?

"Oh! with a little prompt, I can recall this one!" I exclaimed, and spent the next half hour cruising websites, primarily advertising analysts but not excluding brewmasters, which registered a uniform astonishment that such a lousy beer could capture so large a market share, and at premium prices no less. But amidst all the astonishment the slogan in question wouldn't yield to my scrutiny.

LILJOL might know the slogan off the top of his head.

The question must have specified a year, because "Find Your Beach" was absolutely a slogan for Corona.

No year was specified. But "Find Your Beach" wasn't one of the options.
