Answers:

1. Black [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hills ]

2. Problem-solving [I (REACH, LESTER) at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON pre-called "philosophical, logical", and first called for "Metaphysical" (Choice 2), but then on further reading saw Choice 4 or 5 (Problem-solving) as the better answer. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razor .]

3. Insincere talk [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/claptrap ]

4. Jumping [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springbok ]

5. Harry Potter [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severus_Snape ]

6. Collider [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider ]

7. Houston Rockets [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Harden ]

8. Naples [Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camorra ]

9. Redact [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/redact ]

10. Finnish [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Sibelius . For a version of his "Finlandia" with English words sung by the chorus at the end, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE0RbPsC9uE (8:11) . For Finnish words sung at the end, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOSaT6U4e-8 . For now-controversial English words sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at the end (3:26), see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3cqNgcXWSc . For an instrumental-only version of "Finlandia", see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6P3cIJHWjw .]

Round Winner at Buster's Bar, Ottawa ON: Chris (CEEZED, KAYZED), Dave (YELDOR, TULADI), Patrick (MRRED) and me (REACH, LESTER) with 5000 Points on each tablet. We 4 were the only team members who made it this week.

11. Pulses [I called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legume ]

12. Devi [I split my votes between Devi and Kali, going with Devi as REACH because Kali is a frightening-looking goddess; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devi and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali . According to the Wikipedia article on Kali, she is the "destroyer of evil forces....often portrayed standing or dancing on her consort, the Hindu god Shiva....", so Kali may be the more accurate answer to this Question, with Devi a generic goddess who could still be considered to have Shiva as husband. See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva .]

13. Benjamin Harrison [We guessed wrong on this one, losing most of the 1000 Points; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Harrison (grave in Indianapolis, Indiana). ]

14. Scuba diving [We guessed right on this one, assuming tiny gas bubbles were involved, but according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_narcosis the effect may be more like the dulling of the mental faculties with acute alcohol poisoning with many martinis (according to comedians Wayne & Shuster, is one glass a "martinus"?).]

15. Expatiate [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/expatiate ]

16. Good morning, Vietnam [I think Patrick (MRRED) or maybe Chris (CEEZED, KAYZED) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Cronauer ]

17. Drink it [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebfraumilch ]

18. Napoleon Bonaparte [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Roman_Empire and https://www.historytoday.com/archive/en ... man-empire ]

19. Canada [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athabasca,_Alberta and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Athabasca ]

20. Vietnam [see https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47366398 ]

21. Sultan of Brunei [We went with splits, but mostly missed the Points on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hassanal_Bolkiah ]

22. Anthology [I first called for something like "congregation" ("con"="together", but in Latin) which was Choice 1 or 2, but then on further reading, saw Choice 4 or 5 was better (Anthology). See the section "Etymology" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthology ; I recognized that the "anther" is part of a plant (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamen ) and "chrysanthemum"="gold flower" in Greek (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysanthemum ).]

23.(a) Shrimp [I wrongly called for "Cockroach" which is of Order Blattodea (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockroach ) instead of the other Arthropod of the 5 Choices (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridea ) ]

24.(a) Queenston [We needed Clues for this one, losing about half the Points; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Titanic for Queenston ("now Cobh") .]

25.(a) Spain [Dave (YELDOR, TULADI) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Rioja_(Spain) ]

26.(a) Acidophilus [I called this one, since "Acidophilus"="likes acid" which I assumed might be associated with lactic acid related to Lactobacilli ; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus_acidophilus ]

27.(a) Northern California [We guessed wrong on this one; see https://www.carneros.com/ ]

28.(a) Saul [It was between Saul and Jeroboam, and since I had never heard of the Battle of Gilboa, went wrongly with Jeroboam; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Gilboa and the section "war with Judah" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeroboam . We didn't have enough tablets to split our votes, and Dave had trouble with one or both of his tablets freezing from time to time (Chris too had trouble with one of his tablets).

29. 27 [We went with the largest number, since each hand has 4 fingers, each with 4 bones (total 16) and a thumb with 3 bones (total 19) + some in the wrist; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand ]

30. Scarface [We missed Points on this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarface_(1983_film) ]

31. Tokyo [We went with Tokyo because "Ha-ne-da" looks Japanese; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haneda_Airport ]

32. 13-3 [We couldn't remember the exact score for a pre-call, but knew it was low-scoring, and then recognized 13-3 as the correct Choice; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_LIII ]

33. Hypochondria [I split my guesses, going with "Hypochondria" as REACH; see https://academic.oup.com/brain/article/ ... 244/340497 ]

34. Aries [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aries_(astrology) ]

35. Rhythm [Most of us missed this one for 2000 Points; Patrick (MRRED) might have got this in time; see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0XLzIswI2s ]

36. Olympic [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panhellenic_Games ]

37. Hamburg [We guessed wrong, going with Helsinki or Paris or Stockholm(?); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_b ... in_Hamburg ]

38. Whelk [A gastropod is of the Phylum Mollusca, more precisely a snail; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whelk and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastropoda ]

39. Paraguay [Patrick (MRRED) called this one; see the section "Independence and rule of Francia: at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraguay ]

40. The Rivals [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rivals ]

41. Cuba [We pre-called this one, so we all got 50% Bonus Points; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_C ... population ]

Re Answer to Q10: In the first YouTube link, the chorus sings Finnish words, with rough English translation superimposed on the screen.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The English words sung by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the third YouTube link were by American poet Amy Bridgman (1830-1930); see the section "A hymn recorded by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finlandia_hymn :

On great, lone hills, where tempests brood and gather,
Primeval Earth, against primeval sky,
We, faring forth, possessed by fervent longing,
Have found a throne, eternal and high,
Have knelt at last in wordless adoration,
Till fire and whirlwind have both gone by.

With ardent song we greet the golden morning.
By faith upborne, remember not the night.
The whole wide world, triumphant hails the dawning.
God walks abroad in garments of might,
The hills, behold, are now a path of splendor,
Transfigured all, and all crowned with light.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

What could possibly be controversial about these inspiring words?
I suppose some might say that they exalt Manifest Destiny, with God approving the Master White Race taking the land (including Utah) away from the primitive aboriginals.
This version was also used as the closing music for radio broadcasts by the white nationalist, neo-Nazi National Vanguard (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_ ... ganization) .

OTOH, Liszt's "Les Preludes" (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IywXC0KsEWQ ) was used in "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIKcmj3lphY ) but also by the Third Reich (other whites trying to conquer the Universe). Why not just enjoy good music and ignore the politics?

Nothing, now. And I don't think any of us would find anything subversive in listening to Smetana's "Ma Vlast" (including its most famous section "The Moldau") or Chopin's Polonaises, either.

However, if you put yourself in the mindset of the ruler of a multi-ethnic imperial regime who is mortally afraid of nationalist movements, then the perceived threat becomes clearer. As you probably know, until about 100 years ago Finland was under the control of the Russian Empire. The empire was comprised of many different nationalities at a time when nationalist movements were rising in strength throughout Europe. If these movements gained steam and the various nationalities rose up, the empire would fall apart (The Austro-Hungarian Empire had the same issue, one historian calling nationalism--particularly Serbian nationalism--"a jackal snapping at the Austro-Hungarian Achilles' Heel"). Thus, anything that promoted nationalist feelings among the people--however benign they may seem today--was met with hostility by The Powers That Be, which discouraged or sometimes banned the playing of those works.

Finlandia was one of those works. Even the wordless "Ma Vlast" was a kind of act of defiance, because the "My Land" of the title did not refer to the Austro-Hungarian empire, but rather the homeland of the Czechs, and the music leaned heavily on Czech traditions and themes. After conquering Poland, the Nazis banned the playing of Chopin's Polonaises and Mazurkas because they thought these works evoked Polish nationalism.

In retrospect, while we may see little that is offensive about these things now, later events proved that the Russian and Austrian royal families had good reason to worry about them.

Some paraphrased Altergory Questions for this game:

Q24. YOU ASKED FOR IT v the Titanic
The Lunada Bay Boys are a ___ gang in Palos Verdes Estates.
SURFER {We got on this answer late, because we had to debate the eliminations.}

Q25. BIBLICAL KINGS v wine regions
Shammua, Solomon, Shobab, and Nathan are all sons of this Biblical king.
DAVID. {Pre-call by DUFF}

Q26. The Titanic v SCIENCE CLASS
Lactobacillus _____ is a species of bacteria. [there may have been additional info in the question]
ACIDOPHILOUS. {Easily answered once the five choices appeared.}

Q27. Wine Regions v YOU ASKED FOR IT
International Dot Day [is a celebration to honor and encourage.]
CREATIVITY {No one on our team had ever heard of it. 3rd-clue save.}

This round proved challenging. On Q's 23 and 28, we took the same questions as REACH. We had to work hard to run the eliminations, and were only in the clear when the third clues appeared.

So often we think, “If only we had a history professor on our team!”
Then we laugh and laugh.

According to our Indian History expert (and the people he consulted with afterward to make sure), this was a bad question because there were two correct answers. The answer they wanted was Devi (which is usually really more of a generalized term for "goddess"), but Kali (another choice) was certainly considered to be a wife/consort of Siva. BT should probably just choose one and remove the other one as an answer.
