Well... Hopefully, this will be the one Cameron's gets to drop.

In addition to our lack of knowledge, we were struck by strange and inconsistent tablet operation, some full-point answers by players rewarded with 0's here and there, mostly during the Countdown Round... Rebooted the system immediately after Showdown, and things behaved much better. Probably only cost us some 3-5 thousand points overall, not enough to move us up very much (max of one spot according to the standings; would have landed somewhere in the gap ahead of Wallaby's), but it was frustrating.

Next week, the system will get the ol' reset button mashed when I first get there a couple hours before Showdown...

You have my empathy.

You would have ended higher than you propose, simply because so much of success in these difficult quizzes depends on intuition, and to be uncomfortable, whether for bad sight-lines or for faulty equipment, is a disruption very difficult to overcome.

Been there. Hope you can claw your way back.

Good idea. We’ve had the same thing happen from time to time, sometimes complete with half the boxes failing to come back for the next question. It is intensely frustrating.

The K-zoo Krew is moving on again, to our 6th home in 27 years. We have learned that BWW-Kalamazoo is dropping Buzztime at some point in September (it might be the 13th, it might be the 30th--it's hard to get a definite answer). That being so, we'll be playing at Brewster's Junction in Kalamazoo/Portage starting next Tuesday and for as long as they'll have us.

See you all on the big board.

We feel your pain, from one peripatetic team to another. Best wishes on the new place, may it be a soft landing.

The trivia god moaned.

Not because of the results so far from the Sandbagger tournament. The Odins from Ohio were in the lead, but that was hardly a surprise, after all, they're Odins. He knew well that his group was not as thunderous as they had been in days of yore. The victory from the year before had been a bolt out of the blue, and he did not expect lightning to strike twice, but it was better to be over the hill than under it.

No, he moaned because Trivalhalla looked likely to be under the hooves of most of the winged wild buffaloes stampeding out of the realm sometime soon. He had read the current god of Buzztime saying as much in the usual odd and twisted way, and the news of one bison running early and spitting out the Kzoo Krew was portentous indeed. Jovial jousts are all well and good but they pale in comparison with the potential extinction of the very dimension where they take place

And that had always been the weakness, the Achilles heel of the trivia gods. They knew all the answers . . . except how to keep the trivalhallic realm at a particular place in place.

First, the NTN gods created Trivalhalla, giving it to us trivia gods to rule, but some other gods control the fate of its appearances in the earthly realm. The most common belief was that the god or gods of Money (there was great dispute among the trivia gods about all aspects of these gods) controlled the appearance and disappearance of a specific manifestation of Trivalhalla in a specific human location, but it was far more contentious to believe that one or some or many money gods controlled the overall existence of the place and that it had the power to end Trivalhalla.

Or so the prophesies say.

The god of Buzztime said that most of the winged wild buffaloes would be free to stampede in November. Will they indeed stampede, and if so, will it be fatal to Trivalhalla? If it be fatal, will it be quick, or will it be slow, a Fimbulwinter before the end? Unlike the Nordic tales of Ragnorak, with gods gone wrong and wild beasts and evil monsters that are decent enough to be slaughterable by great acts of valor, our prophecies speak of some immortal money-spirit, perhaps a devil, going by the name of Bankruptcy, with various minions named Chapters. Other prophecies speak of a kinder, more gentle god named Takeover. There is even a tale where Takeover saves Buzztime from Bankruptcy.

Who knows? The prophecies agree on little, but none even hint that these dollar demons can be fought with answers to even the most difficult trivia questions. We already know from bitter experience with the gods of the locations that our most potent magic has no effect on those money gods. Some stories seem to imply that the only way to defeat a money-god is to fight fire with fire, indeed, that seems to be the moral of the Takeover tales, but we trivia gods have always had more answers than dollars.

Unlike the Nordic Odin, who at least had the head of Mimir to consult, we have nothing but the prophecies predicting our doom. If it comes, should we fight, even if we know we will fail and our universe will end? If we fight, how will we fight? What weapons do we have against such gods? Fight or not, will we only show that trivia gods are trivial gods?

Or is Horace our only answer to our doom?

Don’t ask, we never know, what fate the gods grant us,
whether your fate or mine . . . don’t waste your time on Babylonian,
futile, calculations. How much better to suffer what happens,
whether Jupiter gives us more winters or this is the last one. . . .
[S]ince time is short: limit that far-reaching hope.
The envious moment is flying now, now, while we’re speaking:
Seize the day, place in the hours that come as little faith as you can.

Week Three of the Qualifying Round coming up tonight.

The trivia god grumbled. He'd throw a bolt of lightning if only he had one.

The Buzztime website appears to have malfunctioned in reporting Showdown team scores. Individual scores are available. Since the raw material is available to calculate the results, that is just what I am going to do. I do not know if Mr. Denton's website will be affected by this, but if it isn't, that will be a crosscheck.

Will report back if I find problems while attempting this.

As of 12:45PM EDT, there are still no team scores posted on the Buzztime website.

I have manually compiled team scores from the individual scores that are posted on their website. I have compared them to some incomplete and very blurry camera shots from last night's leaderboard. I think the scores are more-or-less correct, but there is at least one discrepancy between the leaderboard score and my calculation**

At this point, any scores I show here are tentative. I would strongly recommend that you crosscheck the scores I have posted for your team against the scores posted on the Buzztime website. If you believe I made any errors, please post an explanation of them here, and I will review and correct them where necessary in a revised listing of scores on Friday. Should Mr. Denton post scores on his website, I will cross-check my figures against his and Buzztime's. Should Buzztime post team scores, those scores will be considered the official team score unless there are clear discrepancies between the team and top six individual scores. If Buzztime does not post team scores, the official team score for purposes of this tournament will be my final compilation of the total of the six highest scores for a location.

BWW Blacksburg reported inoperative equipment. There were no scores associated with Pockets Pool and Pub.

**The leaderboard showed a team score over slightly over 40,000, perhaps 40330, for Time Out West. However, the average the six top scores for the location posted on the Buzztime website is below 40K, 38931 to be precise. Normally, this can happen when a nonregistered player gets a score in the top six. I would appreciate it if someone from the location could tell us what happened there last night.

Tentative team scores 9/18:

The Fellowship, Red Fox Sports, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 52238
The Old Barn, Portland, OR 50445
Mad River, New York NY 48990

For what it's worth, there were technical problems at Teasers last night (again). At the beginning of showdown, the screens locked and the system needed to be rebooted. By the time the system came back on, we had missed the first round, costing us 7500 points (the questions were easy). Alas.

This trivia god was under the impression that the Showdown team score was calculated based on the top six scores, rather than the top five as it is in the other games. NTN made this rule change circa 2000 in response to the use of computers in Showdown by the National at West Covina. Therefore, when Buzztime failed to post team scores, I made manual calculations based on the top six scores.

Closer examination of the Showdown webpage shows that Buzztime at some point in time shifted Showdown team scores back to the top five individual scores. If this is the case, then the scores for 9/18 will need to be recalculated along with cumulative totals. I will probably get this done by tomorrow.

I suppose this makes me an old fogie trivia god.:)

Not so fast, STRO--I think it is still top six for Showdown, but the "top five" statement is a boilerplate statement that got merged onto all game pages. There was a discussion of this here within the last year or two, I'll see if I can find it.

I just want to save you from some unnecessary recalculation if I can help it.

STRO, see this thread from this past March. It is still calculated as the top six despite the statement saying otherwise:

You are correct in your assumption that the discrepancy in the score that showed up on the leaderboard vs. the average of the top six individual scores at Time Out West is due to a non-registered player. Our top individual score that night was from a non-registered player.

I was away most of the day, but I took a look at Don Denton's compilation on a laptop, and, just eyeballing his numbers, it looked like he was using top five, and then I saw the Buzztime language. I'm now home, and after checking this, that is not the case.

I have rechecked all my entries in the spreadsheet I did for 9/18 against the posted Buzztime individual scores. They are correct. The scores Don Denton has posted on his website are significantly different than mine; all the reported scores are higher than mine by hundreds to thousands of points.

I have been informed that Buzztime has been told about their lack of team scores. For that reason, I will not declare any scores final until we see whether or not Buzztime posts team scores.

If anyone wants to crosscheck my figures, PM me with an email address and I can send you the rechecked spreadsheet (this bulletin board does not let me upload an .xlsx file).

Buzztime has posted team scores for 9/18. They match the scores I posted earlier this week. To avoid any confusion, now or in the future, I will post them again here, calling them the official scores.

To cover two points that arose this week:

While it must be immensely frustrating for Teasers to continue to have the same problems with Showdown that plagued this year's McCarthy Cup, they are the only team in this tournament having that problem. I cannot justify cancelling the competition for the week based on that. I can only hope that all the money they've been winning in Smartest Bar is of some consolation to them. :)

Per Time Out West, the score recorded for purposes of this tournament is the average of the top six registered players, since that is what Buzztime uses to calculate the official scores.

Finally, condolences to the players at BWW Blacksburg, who have had system failure the last two weeks, but were kind enough to report that to me.

Now, the official scores:

I note that three scores listed on the Buzztime site differ from the scores that showed up on the leaderboards last night: BWW Arlington, Primetime Sports Grill, and Oliver's Old Time Tavern, the first being about 4K different. As noted last week, this is probably due to a nonregistered player making the top six and for purposes of this tournament, the Buzztime website score is the official score.

Here are last night's scores:

The Fellowship, Red Fox Sports, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 50346
Danny K's, Orange CA 49551
Teasers, Chicago IL 49523
Big Guys, Winnipeg MB 49410
Mad River, New York NY 48723
The Ragged Rascals, BWW-Albuquerque NM 48432
Whispers, Ottawa ON 48408
Sweet Pea's Public House, St Paul MN 47305
Tipsy Coyote, Scottsdale, AZ  47022
Houlihan's, Westbury NY 43954
Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean ON 42695
BWW-Arlington VA 42161
K-zoo Krew, Brewster's Junction, Kalamazoo MI 41531
Cameron's, Half Moon Bay CA 38962
BWW-Oklahoma City OK 38133
The Old Barn, Portland, OR 37244
Four Corners, Chapel Hill NC 36844
Primetime Sports Grill, Tampa, FL 32562
Stadium Cafe, Addison TX 32051
BWW, Lemmon Avenue, Dallas, Texas 31732
Oliver's Old Towne Tavern, Laurel MD 31388
Scooter's, Las Vegas NV 30365
Time Out West, Hanover Park, IL 29006
Wallaby's, Lenexa KS 28088
Coaches Pub, Houston, TX 26236
KC's Time Out, Evansville IN 12351

The cumulative totals for the last four weeks (I have dropped those locations that had a zero score for more than one week):

The Fellowship, Red Fox Sports, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 207132
Big Guys, Winnipeg MB 189255
Mad River, New York NY 186309
Sweet Pea's Public House, St Paul MN 184174
BWW-Arlington VA 182655
Whispers, Ottawa ON 180130
The Ragged Rascals, BWW-Albuquerque NM 180079

Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean ON 163286
K-zoo Krew, Brewster's Junction, Kalamazoo MI 163207
Teasers, Chicago IL 159924
Scooter's, Las Vegas NV 159877
BWW-Oklahoma City OK 155516
Primetime Sports Grill, Tampa, FL 138454

Wallaby's, Lenexa KS 118048
Stadium Cafe, Addison TX 107514
Four Corners, Chapel Hill NC 98551
KC's Time Out, Evansville IN 86339

Last but not least, the all-important three-out-of-four totals (because even trivia gods can have a bad day). Line indicates top 16 cutoff point::

The Fellowship, Red Fox Sports, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 160524
Big Guys, Winnipeg MB 145729
BWW-Arlington VA 143810
Mad River, New York NY 142926

I will post the first knockout round matchups and perhaps a few observations when we get closer to the date of the first round, which will begin on October 15, in deference to the religious holidays.

Well, a beautiful game it was not.

I will probably not be available to post official results shortly after Buzztime puts up scores; I'll probably get that done very late morning/early afternoon.

Thanks. That game was a bloodbath. Easily the lowest-scoring game in the knockout rounds that I can remember. Good luck to all that survived the Tuesday night massacre.
