Answers:

1. Spain [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadiz ]

2. Portentous [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/portentous ]

3. Boulangere [pre-calls for "au gratin" were wrong, so Dai (BLADOR) called this one; see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9ud6lLMeIA ]

4. Mars [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Recall_(1990_film) ]

5. Red Rock Formations [I (REACH) eliminated Joshua trees and cacti as desert species, and succulent varieties from mountainous terrain, and guessed this of the remaining 2 Choices; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_of_the_Gods ]

6. Dust bowl [Dai deduced and called this from the year, which eliminated the other Choices; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sunday_(storm) ]

7. Vixen [see the section "Etymology" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox ]

8. VW Beetle [Patrick (MRRED) pre-called this one; see https://www.dw.com/en/amazon-delivers-v ... a-50067148 ]

9. Jean (LESTER) pre-called this one, confirmed by me when I mentioned the 2001 film "A Beautiful Mind" starring Russell Crowe & Jennifer Connelly; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Forbes_Nash_Jr. and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Beautiful_Mind_(film) ]

10. Southern South America [Dai or Chris (CEEZED) called this one first; see https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2019-july-2 ]

11. Upper lip [I pre-called "lip"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philtrum ]

12. Jamaica [Phil (BSLXPN) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Garvey ]

13. Lemniscate [Jean called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemniscate ]

14. Giannis Antetokounmpo [I called this one as a guess (since he was NBA Athlete of the Year); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_Male ... ESPY_Award ]

15. Hirsute [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/hirsute ]

16. Jimmy Hoffa [Dave (YELDOR) pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sheeran ]

17. Europe [Despite calls for "Africa", I went with Europe because the Dutch, Lithuanians, Croatians, Serbs are tall (the last three in the NBA); see https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/maps ... the-world/ ]

18. Anita Hill [We all missed this one, I going with Barbara Jordan; see the section "Written works" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Hill ]

19. 1970's [we all missed this one, I going with 1940's because I had never heard of Nik Nik shirts; see https://www.etsy.com/ca/market/nik_nik_shirt ]

20. E-cigarette [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juul ]

21. Todd Rundgren [Phil called this one, confirmed by our server, Kevin; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Rundgren , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLeCB7Kn-VE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoX52Sua8Oc ]

28.(a) Mauritania [Phil pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauritania ]

29. 1963 [Andrew C (GRYFON) pre-called "late 1950's", so we all went for 1960's (close enough); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_Code ]

30. Pluto [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_(moon) ]

31. Eruption of Mt. Pelee [Dai pre-called "pyroclastic flow" and I "volcano"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Pelee ]

32. Avengers: Endgame [Patrick (MRRED) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avengers:_Endgame ]

34. Fish [we pre-called "Dog" or "Cat", so went with "Dog" when "Cat" did not appear as one of the Choices. According to https://www.wonderslist.com/most-popula ... n-america/ there are 88.3 million cats, 74.8 million dogs, but 142 million freshwater fish (an aquarium can hold many fish, whereas Cat Ladies with many, many cats are rare). Despite their own numbers, the authors then complete an article naming #1 dog and #2 cat as most popular pet. D'oh!!! Paul (NINJA) was the only Player to get all 7500 Points in the Lightning Round at Whispers Bar, Ottawa ON ]

35. New York Yankees [Phil pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Judge ]

38. William the Conqueror [Andrew C (GRYFON) called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curia_regis . Although the Latin should have suggested William the Conqueror, a Norman (a North Man from Northern France), I worried about Edward the Confessor (who had sympathies and connections with Normandy); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_the_Confessor . In the section "Function and legacy" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witenagemot , "...in a sign of the witenagemot's enduring legacy, the curia regis continued to be dubbed a "witan" by chroniclers until as late as the 12th century". Luckily, I stuck with William the Conqueror. ]

In the section "Scientific", an alloy of 90% platinum (element 78) and 10% iridium (element 77) was used in 1889 to fabricate a bar with the standard metre length inscribed between two marks, and the kilogram mass standard. In my high school days, I had a fountain pen which had an "iridium tip" which meant that it was hard and would not corrode. ]

40. Melbourne [Dai and Phil pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne ]

41. Brave New World [I pre-called this one (the character John "Savage" was born, not decanted, on a reservation in New Mexico); see the section "Plot" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_New_World ]

We at Whispers Bar, Ottawa ON were joined by Paul Paquet (NINJA) who got all 7500 Points on the Lightning Round; Paul may not have registered his handle as NINJA, so his score didn't count in the Site score.

Paul is an excellent trivia player who runs TriviaHallofFame which seeks to honor/honour great trivia players; see https://www.triviahalloffame.com/vote/index.php . To represent ntn/Buzztime, someone suggested Mr Z (at BWW Florence, South Carolina) be nominated (because he has the most Playersplus points). But TriviaHallofFame uses real names, so Paul is asking if the ntn/Buzztime community can help him with a real name or email address for contact (personal privacy might be a concern, and must be respected). Paul may be contacted at paul@triviahalloffame.com .

Since 2001, Paul has written the Questions for World Trivia Night, held each fall in Ottawa ON; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trivia_Night . The Questions are wide-ranging and entertaining in order to appeal to a wide spectrum of Players. I still remember my team (La Triviata) getting two toughies for hamburger computers in 2001: (1) What is the Greek word for "coal"?___________________, and (2) What was the nom de guerre of D.H. Lawrence's brother-in-law [sic?________________________. Answers were to be written on paper answer sheets which were hand-marked at breaks by teams of judges. Of course, no reference books, phone calls for help, electronic devices, etc.!!! [There is a technical issue with the answer to Q2, but what is the best logical guess for the question as written?]

Answers to follow in a couple days.

Glad to hear Paul Paquet joined you. I have attended the hall of fame inductions as part of TCONA/Trivia Nationals in Las Vegas over the past years. I am heartily in favor of including the Buzztime world in the HoF. Players Plus, however, may not be the way. It just refers to frequency of play, not quality, and there are ways to game that system (ask Czarge who has researched it, not done it). Another suggestion would be Anon and the Cleveland area Fellowship as the most frequent winners of the annual tournaments.

Answers to the two trivia Questions scripted by Paul Paquet for the 2001 World Trivia Night contest:
(1) The Greek word for "coal" is "anthrax". Since none of us (the La Triviata team) knew Greek, we had to brainstorm possible connections. Someone threw out "anthracite", the hardest form of coal. I immediately recognized the answer must be "anthrax", since the "-ax" ending is Greek (compare "Ajax", "thorax", etc.) and "th" is the Greek letter "theta". That summer, anthrax had made the news in a terrorist scare. See https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/ ... isease_is/ and https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/the/g ... d-for-coal .

(2) We guessed "The Red Baron" as the most well-known nickname from WWI. D.H. Lawrence's wife's maiden name was Frieda von Richthofen; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frieda_Lawrence , which states that Frieda was not the sister, but a 5th cousin of Manfred von Richthofen. Still, an interesting trivia fact.
