Answers:

1. Jaunt [see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/jaunt ]

2. Death Valley [I (REACH) at Whispers Pub, Ottawa ON called this one; see https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/dar ... tates.html . Amateur astronomers seek dark sky areas to view dim objects on clear moonless nights. A website to check out is Attila Danko's https://www.cleardarksky.com/ ; click on "Clear Sky Charts", and then in "Search, By Keyword" the desired location (for example, "North Frontenac" for Plevna ON, which is 2 hours drive west of Ottawa ON. From there, I've seen all 7 stars visible to the naked eye in the Pleiades open star cluster, whereas only 5 are usually easy to see). Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah has really dark skies, I've read, and I've seen spectacular hoodoos and trails for daytime exploration. ]

19. Berlin [Patrick (MRRED) called this one; I knew their hit song "Take My Breath Away" from the movie "Top Gun", but had forgotten that New Wave was 35 or so years ago, not recent. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_(band) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx51eegLTY8 ]

20. Distill liquids [Andrew C (GRYFON) pre-called "distill alcohol"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alembic ]

24.(a) Northeast [Phil (BSLXPN) called this one; see the section "List of teams" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League ]

28.(a) Gun [Andrew pre-called "Hunting"; see the section "List of gun dog breeds" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_dog ]

29. Cricket [Patrick and Andrew called this as an enlightened guess; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Cricket_World_Cup ]

32. Tennessee [at least Sue, Dave and Dai got this right; most of the rest of us Canadians went with Colorado (in retrospect, Tennessee is a Southern state, duh!); see the map at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee ]

33. Inception [Andrew called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception ]

34. Q Timex [Phil guessed right, but most of the rest of us hopped around from Rolex to Omega to....; see https://www.timex.ca/q-timex-reissue-38 ... Watch.html ]

35. Security [Myfanwy and Patrick pre-called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_C. ... _(attorney) ]

36. Babylonians [Patrick and Dai called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_world_maps and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonia ... _the_World ]

37. Pods [Dai called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesquite . For a desert plant, I noted that "berries" would be dried out quickly (and would nuts require high water or irrigation?). ]

39. Venomous snake [another pre-call by Dai; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rinkhals ]

40. Sweden [we racists went with Turkmenistan (pop. 5.6 million) instead of Sweden (pop. 9.995 million in 2017); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkmenistan ]

41. Denmark Strait [Andrew pre-called this right away; all the other Choices were wrong, although some Sites might have gone with the Baltic Sea (the Hood was there in WWI at Jutland). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Hood , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of ... ark_Strait , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark_Strait and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltic_Sea . At Whispers Pub in Ottawa ON, the 2 Choices left after 3 Clues were the Firth of Forth and the Denmark Strait; at some other Sites, the 2 Choices left might have been the Baltic Sea and the Denmark Strait. ]

At the end of the game, the large screen showed Whispers Pub as the #1 Site in Canada & the USA, although the Site and Player Standings were not shown on our individual tablets. So maybe the official results will be different Wednesday morning at https://www.buzztime.com/ . We understand that Mad River, New York NY did not play, and other Sites may have been playing under full strength due to the Jewish holy days.

HMS Hood wasn't commissioned until 1920, and therefore obviously wasn't at the Battle of Jutland.

If you want some trivia, HMS Hood was named after Admiral Samuel Hood, and one of his descendents, Admiral Horace Hood was killed at Jutland (on the Invincible, which went down in a magazine explosion similar to the one that sank the Hood years later)

We were sunk (ha!) by a bad pre-call for “Scotland”, which led to 17/18 boxes going to Firth of Forth. There was some doubt with that answer, and at least one person said “Denmark Strait”, but not until most of the points had ticked away. Unfortunately, only TED changed his box to the right answer, and Firth of Forth was the last distraction remaining.

To The VIKING: thanks for the correction re HMS Hood and Jutland; I suspected as much, but was too tired to check thoroughly.

Alas those Dubois sisters, troublesome even when they're not in the room.

As for Famous Spaniards: 24(b) & 27(b)?

Who kept a home in Valladolid? Cervantes. And who was a famous 20th C. cellist? Pablo Casals.

I played all 41 questions in this quiz, and those were the only two questions which I answered successfully.

Congratulations to REACH, and his fellow travelers at Whispers, for a #1 site score.
