4. Mansion [Andrew C (GRYFON) and Deb (GRZLDA) called this first; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluedo ]

5. Apples [after pre-calls for aircraft did not pan out, Andrew C called this; see https://pickyourown.org/USapplecrop.htm . During another Trivia Contest many years ago, one of the Questions was "What company manufactures the most aircraft annually?" After guesses for "Boeing", etc. I suggested "How about the Piper Cub?", and Andrew R (RADER) immediately said "Cessna" (he has his own pilot's license). According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna , Cessna airplanes used to be built in Kansas, then in Oregon, but now in China, sad to say. ]

16. Taylor Swift [my call; see https://www.theguardian.com/culture/201 ... f-the-year ]

17. Russian [my call; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_nihilist_movement ]

18. Duck [my call; see the section "Instrumentation" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_and_the_Wolf . "A Duck" was also the right answer in the Monty Python skit "She's a witch!" - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrzMhU_4m-g ]

19. Anabaptist [despite an early call for "Lutheran", Andrew C called "Anabaptist" and I backed him up - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mennonites ]

20. CEO of McDonald's [despite a wrong pre-call for "Coach" by someone else, I recognized this after a slight delay; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Easterbrook . Patrick (MRRED) quipped Easterbrook lost his job "for giving an employee his special sauce". ]

22. Boat [pre-called by Andrew C, and explained in precise detail in a pre-call by Dave (YELDOR, TULADI). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeg ]

23.(a) Britain [pre-called by Andrew C; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cymbeline ]

24.(a) Screwdriver [Dai pre-called "vodka", and Patrick or Kevin (our server) called "screwdriver"; see http://simple-cocktails.com/2013/05/screwdriver/ and https://www.howsweeteats.com/2018/06/orange-crush/ ]

35. Winged sandals [Dai pre-called "a helmet", and I "a winged helmet", before seeing the Choices and calling "winged sandals" - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermes ]

36. Galileo [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelista_Torricelli . Torricelli's name lives on in the pressure unit the "Torr"="1 mm Hg" for his invention of the mercury barometer. The space above the mercury column in a sealed glass tube in a mercury barometer is mainly empty space (with a few atoms of mercury vapour moving around in it); this disproved the contention from Aristotle's day that "Nature abhors a vacuum" so a vacuum was believed practically impossible. ]

First Racehorse Q: "This horse made headlines with 16 consecutive wins in the mid-90's" (paraphrased) CIGAR

Second Racehorse Q: "Ole Bob Bowers was the sire of this famous racehorse" (again paraphrased) JOHN HENRY

Total wheelhouse category for me...

Sigh.....

The night starts at Teasers with 2nd in Sports and then a very nice win in Brainbusters.

And then the system locks up again and the reboot gets back into the system after Q3 of countdown round (Spain). The system will not let us in, though, until category round. A sad review of the questions missed shows alas, that we would have gotten all 22. And more alas, we had a slam dunk precall on the final question.

We still missed mango is a cashew question, so would have finished 9th or so. Congrats to The Fellowship and others who played well in an accessible round. Just wanted to post this in order to whine in general about the vagaries of technology at Teasers this year and to let the world know we did not miss Lake Chad.

A very nice win indeed—In fact, it was among the top ten margins of victory in the past two years! Congrats on the well-deserved win, and condolences on the technical problems in Showdown.
