22nd Annual McCarthy Cup: Rules, Sign-ups, Results

Oliver's Old Town Tavern in Laurel MD would like to play in the 22nd annual McCarthy Cup. Looking forward to better results in any matchup against Mad River.

The move isn't set in stone yet, but pretty much all team members would like to move to a non-smoking location. Will be sad if it happens as we have been playing SD at Stadium since July 2000. QB1 starting in 1997.

I had given up on our chances of competing this year at Timeout, now that it is down to just two of us.
Plus we only have 2 or 3 boards that can last through a whole Showdown game without rebooting.
But, since there are currently 23 teams registered, one shy of enough for a full 16-team elimination round, I figured, what the hell.

Not like I have anything better to do on a Tuesday night!

So, IDIOT and I, the Timeout crew, all that remain of the former Laclede Street Bar and Grill team by way of St. Louis Sports Zone, will be playing for the McCarthy Cup at Tower Pub.

With a couple of late entries, we end up with 25 teams in this year's McCarthy Cup (list below). As a reminder, the festivities start tomorrow night, then we'll take a week off for St. Patrick's Day, before completing the qualifying rounds on 24 and 31 March and 7 April. We'll take the top three out of four scores, and the top 16 teams will advance to the single-elimination phase. Best of skill to everyone, and best of luck that we don't have repeat games, system crashes, &c.

Mad River was unable to play Showdown tonight because the bar booked some sort of group to watch the Bachelor finale, and no one deigned to inform us of that.

I can understand some sort of sporting event, but a watch party for the freakin' Bachelor? Holy hell.

Regardless, that sucks that nobody thought to inform your team after playing there for years and years. Were you able to speak to management or did some minion just tell you to stay out?

The first week of the McCarthy Cup saw a fairly difficult game, with no really blockbuster scores. Congratulations to the Fellowship for the first place, and for assuming the early lead in the McCarthy. I'd note that I did not see any scores for Mad River or Oliver's; Mad River's absence has been explained, but if there is any information on Oliver's please let me know.

The Ohio Governor has just closed all bars and restaurants indefinitely starting tonight. This of course means no trivia for The Fellowship until these places reopen.

On the plus side, the postponement of the tournament for St. Patrick's Day now seems very fortuitous. We are not asking for special treatment: if the Ohio bars are closed for two weeks, then we can take the 24th as our dropped score.

However, if this closure continues for three weeks or more, The Fellowship may have to withdraw from the tournament. We hope it won't come to that, of course, but I thought a heads-up was appropriate.

Illinois Guv just did the same thing. Effective after tomorrow night.
I would expect more states to follow suit.
Oh well.

This McCarthy Cup may have to go the way of the NCAA and other sports leagues for 2020.

Fortunately, unlike the NCAA, we can delay for several weeks and still eventually finish. I will come out with something official probably on Tuesday, but at this point I anticipate our hiatus will last at least one more week.

I think our closest location is Zooky's Sports Tavern in New Brighton, PA--about 1 1/2 hours from my house. I suspect it will be a tough sell for the team.

Michigan bars and restaurants are closing at 3:00 today.

The Kzoo Krew awaits the decision of the McCC directors on an extended postponement. Perhaps a plan to resume on April 7 will buy enough time for the crisis to subside.

On January 23 I sent a message to the BadBart server on Yahoo! groups (or whatever it is called now after Yahoo!'s messing it all up) that Coaches Pub in Houston wanted to participate, but we don't seem to be on the list of scores.

(Not sure it makes any difference as we're just waiting for Houston to start closing bars, but whenever the Cup resumes, we'd still like to be included.)

All Illinois bars are closed through Mar 31. My vote (Teasers) is that the entire tournament be postponed until at least April 7. Whether we start again afresh or count the week already played can be voted, but I am indifferent to that one.

First, for Brooke, my apologies that your sign-up was not conveyed to me, but clearly you signed up before the deadline, so Coaches is entered retroactively, and your 10 March score has been entered.

Regarding the tournament as a whole, we are on hiatus through at least 7 April. To be honest, I would be very surprised if we are in fact ready to resume play that soon, but for now that will be the target. Around the first of April I will come back with an update as to where we stand.

My plan is to count the week already played once we do resume.

If someone can post to BadBart, I'd appreciate it.

The Gov of Illinois has just announced the closure of everything through April 7. In order for Teasers to play its usual role as a speed bump for Strings and Kent Foxes, it will need to be after that date. Should the state reopen on Apr 7 exactly, there is a live James bond tournament that day and I will need to go win that instead of play McCarthy.

To be serious for a minute, everyone stay mentally and emotionally well.
