2. Bending your knee [I (REACH) pre-called "kneeling", and Andrew C (GRYFON) more precisely pre-called "on one knee"; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/genuflection . Also, the French word for "knee" is "genou".]

3. Kentucky [Pre-called by Myfanwy, Dai (BLADOR) and Dave (YELDOR); see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammoth_C ... ional_Park ]

4. goose [see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_and_the_Beanstock . For the Fractured Fairy Tale version in the "Rocky & Bullwinkle" show, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lis0914nE9s ]

6. French [my pre-call; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_St._Louis ]

7. Bullet [Andrew pre-called "Shinkansen", and then "Bullet"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinkansen . I mentioned that the Shinkansen was ready for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, 56 years ago, whereas Ottawa ON's new LRT (Light Rail Transit) has just opened, several years late, but has conked out whenever the weather has been cold, snowy, icy (conditions to be expected for the second-coldest national capital in the world) and when large numbers of people have got on (i.e. at rush hour). Our version of the Boeing 737 Max... ]

8. Group of aging outlaws [Chorus of calls. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wild_Bunch ]

9. Filled [Andrew and I pre-called "full"; see https://www.dictionary.com/browse/replete ]

10. E-flat [Dai and I pre-called this one, strictly true only for the tempered scale. See the entry for "Minor third" in the table "Comparison with Just Intonation" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_temperament . Andrew joked "What sound would a piano produce if dropped down a mine shaft?" Answer: "A flat miner". ]

11. Germany [Pre-called by Andrew; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dane . Deb (GRZLDA) has a German friend, Doris, who in a pool during an Aquafit exercise was asked with others to raise a hand, and she joked "Oh no, we're not allowed to do that!" ]

12. Lanolin [Pre-called by Dai and me; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanolin ]

13. Norman [I pre-called as a guess "Mason" or "Dixon", but when neither appeared as a Choice, guessed "Norman"; see the section "History" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman,_Oklahoma . After seeing the factoid that Norman OK was named after "Abner Norman", we laughed "Abbie Normal"!!! ]

16. Mars [Dai and I wrongly pre-called "Pluto" because of Cerberus, but Andrew objected "That's not a planet!" [now]. When Pluto was eliminated in the first Clue, I called for Mars. The other table got this right away, for the full 1000 Points. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus_Fossae and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus .]

17. Winnipeg Jets [My pre-call. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blake_Wheeler ]

18. Romany Rye [Myfanwy called this one first; see https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/554 ... romany-rye ]

19. Nobel Prize [I pre-called this, adding "for Physics"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Dirac . A mind that theoretically predicted the existence of anti-matter had some characteristics in common with autism or Asperger's Syndrome. 21. Kipper [Pre-called by Andrew; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kipper ]

22. Board game [Pre-called by Paul at the other table; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catan ]

23.(a) Hard Rock Stadium [Myfanwy called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_LIV ]

24.(a) Mimosa [Dai pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimosa_(cocktail) ]

25.(a) Asteroid [When I saw the year "2017", I thought of "Comet", but then retracted when I saw "double"; I then went with "Asteroid" as a guess for 1000 Points; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_YE5 ]

26.(a) Jennifer Lopez [Myfanwy pre-called "Shakira & Beyonce", then changed to "Shakira & J. Lo"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bow ... ftime_show ]

27.(a) Rock salt [Called first by Myfanwy; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Mary_(cocktail) ]

28.(a) 100-400 [I pre-called "100 to 200"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way ]

29. Nepal [A wrong call for Luxembourg doomed us all; I was doubtful because Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy, but couldn't see through the other Choices to pick Nepal. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Nepal ]

30. Guy de Maupassant [I pre-called this one; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Necklace and read the Plot for the O.Henry-type ending ]

31. Punto banco [Dai called this one from "banco"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baccarat_(card_game) ]

32. Miss Otis [Andrew pre-called "Miss somebody", and Dai then called "Miss Otis"; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Otis_Regrets and Ella Fitzgerald's version at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX-b1Ksetcc ]

33. Switzerland [Pre-called by Dai; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Geneva ]

34. Rudolf Nureyev [I guessed this by eliminating the others as Less Likely; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_White_Crow ]

35. Corvados [Dai pre-called "Calvados", Andrew said the answer was misspelled, and Dai suggested I send an email to the Quizmaster in protest; see https://chefspencil.com/recipe/normandy-apple-tart/ ]

36. Lachesis [I called this one, knowing that Clotho spun the thread of life, Lachesis measured it out, and Atropos (from whom we get the name of the drug Atropine) cut it, ending our life; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachesis ]

37. Alkali [Dai pre-called this, a Chemistry answer, first! See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkali_metal ]

38. The Handmaid's Tale [I switched from this right answer to a call for "A Clockwork Orange", despite my doubts. See the section "Characters" at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid's_Tale . Oh well, there's always next week....]

39. Jacobite [Pre-call by Dai; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobite_rising_of_1745 ]

40. Warbler [Pre-call by Andrew; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_May_warbler , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerulean_warbler , and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden-crowned_warbler ]

41. Algeria [I first guessed Saudi Arabia because the areas near the Equator are actually quite a bit larger than they appear on Mercator projection maps. When this was eliminated in a Clue, I wrongly went with a call for "Mongolia". All but BLADOR (Dai), YELDOR (Dave) and ORNOIR at the other table got wiped out.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... es_by_area , where Algeria is #10, Saudi Arabia is #12, Mongolia is #18, Venezuela is #32, and Turkey is #36. Algeria is not that far from the Equator, and the northern part of Africa is huge, as large as the continental USA, so this in hindsight was the logical guess. Oh well, the only consolation is that the Juggernaut at Red Fox Sports, Cuyahoga OH seems to have been wiped out even worse than us in this game. Respects to all wetware Sites that did well.]

We crashed and burned due to an erroneous belief that Mongolia was quite large and a bad split that left only one player on the right answer.

Mother said there’ll be nights like these.

I just looked it up myself, and the Turandot question was even harder than I thought. There are three characters in the opera with similar names. They are Ping, Pang, and Pong. Pong is the chef.

I adore Puccini but Turandot can't be compared La Boheme or Tosca. (Maybe the aria Nessun Dorma makes the enterprise worth the price of admission.) So the question referenced a minor character who does nothing to advance the plot, in a lesser work. I lost 200 points rubbing my temples.

A. Ben Sinister

"Ben" or "Bend Sinister"?

Again, both the Nabokov questions referenced minor works. "Invitation to a Beheading" reads as if Nabokov were trying to channel his inner Camus, and all his later grumbling about Camus can be taken as implicit regret.

For its elegant demolishment of Freudian interpretation of literature, I'd nominate "Pale Fire" as the greatest novel of the 20th Century. Neither Bend Sinister nor Invitation to a Beheading are recognizably created by the same hand.

But these are transparent things.
