Can anyone explain the final question in the Marathon Round? I'm paraphrasing, "Which of these is not considered a 'piece' in chess?"
1. Pawn
2. Rook (I'm not sure it was Rook, but it was some non-pawn chess piece.)
3. Dog

As I was working while I played, I hit "Dog" and walked away, unable to get back to my box when I saw the clue, "TV's _____ Stars."

We were 6th on the BT East network as a bar, but completely struck out on that one question. I was even going to press "pawn", but dogs are not chess pieces either, and my teammates both went with "dog" so I did too. When I saw the final hint, I couldn't jump back fast enough to save the bonus, and nobody else did either.

I'm not a chess player. But before I blame Buzztime, I want to know how "dog" is supposed to be a chess piece?

There were many questions in the Marathon Round in which one of three answers was obviously wrong. I don't care for this as makes the game too easy; there are only three choices to start with and by essentially eliminating one to anyone with half a brain you're giving people a 50/50 chance of getting it right by sheer guessing. It seems to me there were trying to do that with this question as well. The only problem is that it was an "except question" so by including a joke answer which had nothing to do with the question there were two right answers. Pawn is correct as well by the way. While they're found on the chess board obviously they're not technically considered a "piece."

Obviously? I guess historically the term "piece" generally referred to non-pawns (and sometimes only bishops and knights), but even if they had a real chess piece in place of "Dog," it would still be a pretty lousy question in my opinion.

How strange! We did not have "dog" as one of the choices. I think our choices were:

King
Pawn
Queen

I had no idea that pawns were not considered "pieces," but I picked it because it seemed the most different of the three. I would have certainly picked "dog" if that had been a choice.

If all of the above is true then it's obvious BT simply took a CD Q and loaded into the Six format which automatically eliminates two distractors, sometimes causing issues like this. I know for a fact that there is a question in the BT database that deals with a pawn not being a true piece.

A Countdown question like this:

Which of these is not considered a chess piece?

    1. Queen
    2. Bishop
    3. Pawn
    4. Rook
    5. Dog

A pawn can most assuredly be referred to as a "piece" in general context.
They are excluded from major and minor pieces while in play, however.
Did the question specifically refer to "during the course of gameplay" or some such?
If not, the question writer's Elo rating will probably take a bit of a hit.

Spotes, I think Akbar71's paraphrase of the question was accurate. I don't recall verbage similar to "during the course of gameplay".
