Final SIX Sciences question: "Which surgical staple was introduced in 1890?"

1. Rubber Gloves
2. Surgical Masks
3. Sterilized Scalpels
4. (Something Else)
5. (Something Else)

After getting hosed on the question, we did a quick Wiki-check from my phone. Wiki said rubber surgical gloves were introduced in 1889, although re-checking today from my laptop it says 1890. The surgical mask, it says, was introduced in 1897. Sterilization by heat as been practiced for centuries, but Lister researched and developed the use of carbolic acid to disinfect surgical instruments in the late 19th Century and cold sterilization was introduced in the early 20th.

What I'm getting at here is that, while technically correct, I still feel like it was bullshit. Like if the question were, "What was the population of the Untied States in 1890, I'd be okay if the possible answers were 63,000; 630,000; 6,300,000; 63,000,000 and 630,000,000. Or even 6 million, 13 million, 27 million, 63 million and 142 million. I'd call bullshit if it was 60 million, 61 million, 62 million, 63 million and 64 million.

Surgical rubber gloves were invented to protect female nurse's hands from carbolic acid, not the patient from infection. Carbolic acid was widely used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.

Fair point. I'm still pissy about the masks. And the question in general. Maybe it's just sour grapes...

I think I'd rather attempt brain surgery than that question. Ick

On the plus side, I can feel a little more confident wagering 6000 on Sciences for the next little while. Questions that lame are thankfully scarce nowadays
