I'm putting this out there because I know it must have happened to others (not necessarily tonight) and it's killing me.
We had moderate team scores going into tonight's Final Six. I had the top two boxes, with 34,000ish on each.
The question comes up, "What country is home to the Mountains of Asir National Park?"
With 4,000 points on the line, I pre-call, "It sounds Arabic."
"Saudi Arabia" is an answer.
Everyone answers "Saudi Arabia."
The final two choices are "Saudi Arabia" and "Finland."
I talk myself into Finland at the last second (maybe "Asir" is some Finninsh spelling of a Norse god?).
The answer, of course, was Saudia Arabia.
The rest of the round is pre-calls all around.
(Two boxes*(4000 points + 4000 bonus))/6 = 2667
We came in third, away from first by a little more than 2000 points.
I felt sick.
Anyone?

Oh, I don't mean to take anything away from those in first and second place. It's a personal anguish that I let down the team and blew a golden opportunity for our first ever Six first.

And I thought you'd down-graded it to "moderately site-poor," or something like that...

California will probably always be The Horribly Site-Poor Golden State. Image San Diego County is for now (Just Plain Old) Site-Poor... Image

We managed to get one box on Saudia Arabia. I kept thinking that name doesn't sound very Finnish, but couldn't get off Finland. Finally, I was going to change. Nope! Too late! Still we pulled it off.

It has been my experience that second-guessing such as that, rarely works out. I've done that many times, had the big points, switched at the last second, and ended with zero.

Also, I never considered Saudi Arabia to be recreational or tourist-minded, and a National Park seemed absurd.

Yep, been there, done that. We've been second or third several times, and most of them happened exactly the same way. I try to console myself by saying that the people ahead of us probably missed the same question as well, so if we both then got it right, the placement would be the same. Seems dumb, but it's forgotten by next week anyway.

Yeah, I did that too. I kept thinking "Asir" sounded like "Aesir", so it's probably Scandanavian. I was looking for Norway or Iceland or something, and when Finland popped up, I took that. Never mind that Finnish names are nothing like Norwegian ... oops.

What about the question on the supposedly easy first round, where the clue in the question was "tooth" or something similar. And then among the answers I find a movie called Piranha 3-D. Never heard of it, but plenty of teeth. Then somebody else calls out the name of a movie called Vampire Something. Never heard of that either, but also tooth, I gotta admit. We ended up on Vampire, but Piranha was the answer. Also, I'm still trying to figure out the team colors of Miami vs. Chicago.

The clue was more like "sink your teeth into" which is why we went with Vampires Suck instead of Piranha 3D. Badly written clue question.

As I recall, all four of the answers were toothy critters...

We went with the vampire answer as well...

And weren't there two answers with piranha in the answer?

Hmmm....

Everybody is pissing and moaning about the clue, but what was the stupid question. I hardly ever pay attention to the clues to get the answer. Soooooo, what was the actual question?

The exact wording of the Piranha 3D question was:

ELISABETH SHUE SINKS HER
TEETH INTO HER ROLE AS A
SHERIFF IN 2010'S:

We luckily had people pre-call Piranha 3D. Otherwise I'd have certainly gone with the vampire one on my own. Same with the football colors question, for that matter.

I was fine on pirhana. I got skunked big time on Asir. My ignorance is far more basic than that of others. I had no clue Saudi Arabia was even vaguely mountainous!

We got done in by that also. Moutains and National Parks in Saudi Arabia, who knew?

You've got my commiseration, Akbar. I've definitely been there and done that.

I also bombed on the tooth question, going with Vampires Suck.

So, basically, you're asking for sympathy from anyone who's ever given an incorrect answer that's cost their team the game?
Well, thank goodness I've never done anything like that in my 20+ years of playing NTN trivia. I'm shocked, shocked I say, to hear of this sort of thing happening!
If I had done that, I would feel like an absolute heel... the lowest form of scum... a real horse's patootie...
Hope that helped.
