With April rolling around, it is time once again to compete in the BrainBuster Tournament created in honor of Tim Richardson (also known to long-time denizens of the trivia forums as DINGO and TLEARY).

The tournament will pretty much be identical to the previous two editions in form: It will run for five consecutive Tuesdays (starting March 31), and each participating team's final score will be calculated as the cumulative HOF score of their four best performances in that time (in other words, each team gets to drop a low score, which will also ameliorate the impact of any technical issues on a particular night). The highest score thus calculated wins, and that team will get the trophy for a year and be required to run the tournament next April.

The only new wrinkle this year is that there is an actual, nice-looking trophy to win. I will post a picture of it below.

RULES: Teams must use assembled brainpower only. No computers and no references of any kind during gameplay, either paper or electronic (or telecommunication from outside the location). Using the Buzztime Playmaker app on electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, or Droid phones is fine, as long as this is the only purpose for which the device is being used, and it is being used in and for the location of the team. Any exploitation of the network split to cheat is, of course, forbidden as well. Any team that pledges to abide by these rules is welcome to sign up.

As the tournament starts on March 31, signup will run from now until midnight on March 30. Please sign up either on this thread or by contacting me by PM or email.

I hope you will consider entering your team, and good skill to all.

Stadium Cafe is in. And we won't whine if one of the Tuesday's falls on some random inconvenient date.

TeamNacho Mamas will give it a shot.

Does the trophy come with magnets so the winning team can hang it sideways from the fridge like that?

Please include Parlay Sports from Tallahassee, FL, in the Richardson Memorial tournament. Many of us usually leave before Brainbuster starts. However, the consensus last night was that people wanted to participate when I brought the news to the group.

Mad River might as well play, even though our tiny team breaks up after Showdown. A couple of us can pull mini-megumis and multibox.

The bar known as Brewstirs (in Roselle, IL) has changed it's name to Teddy B's.
The Buzztime scores are still showing as Brewstirs. I guess it usually takes a while for that stuff to change.

Just a friendly reminder that the deadline for signing up your team is midnight tonight. We have had a great response so far, with 25 teams currently signed up.

The tournament starts tomorrow, so good skill to all!

Signups closed at midnight last night, and with one more 11th-hour entry, the final field stands at 26:

Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
Brewstir's/Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
BWW-Arlington, VA
BWW-Columbia, MD
BWW-El Paso 2, TX
BWW-Kent, OH
Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
Heroes, Wichita, KS
Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
Mad River, New York, NY
Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ
New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
Residuals, Studio City, CA
Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
Teasers, Chicago, IL
Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
West Park Station, Cleveland, OH

Thanks to all who signed up; and if you feel so inclined tonight, raise a glass to the memory of Tim Richardson before the game. I don't know what he'd have to say about all of this, but I'd be willing to bet it would be smart, pithy, and laugh-out-loud funny.

Good skill to all!

So that everyone is aware - It appears "Brewsters" is now officially "Teddy B's", so look for our scores under that name.

It is still Diamond Lil's to me.

It was an extremely competitive first week of the tournament. Although The Fellowship has staked an early lead, it is miniscule and practically meaningless at this point:

12,466 BWW-Kent, OH
12,416 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
12,335 Mad River, New York, NY
12,315 Teasers, Chicago, IL
12,076 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
11,947 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
11,896 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
11,759 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
11,460 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
11,440 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
11,414 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
11,176 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
11,078 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
10,959 Heroes, Wichita, KS
10,805 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
10,666 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
10,397 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
10,256 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
10,154 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
9,566 BWW-Arlington, VA
9,559 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
9,255 Residuals, Studio City, CA
9,133 BWW-Columbia, MD
9,068 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
8,056 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
7,265 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ

It is probably worth pointing out that Tim Richardson Cup has been an extremely volatile tournament during its brief existence. The inaugural edition had a different leader every week, and in both previous editions, the eventual champion came from behind to win it in the last week. If the past is any guide, this is just the start of what promises to be an exciting tournament. Good skill to all this week!

And as mentioned in the Showdown tourney - For this week, Diamond Lil's/Brewstirs/Teddy B's will be playing at BWW Bloomingdale.

Looks can be deceiving. First, let's look at the results from last night:

WEEK 2 RESULTS:

13348 BWW-Arlington, VA
13339 BWW-Kent, OH
13126 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
12472 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
12157 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
12133 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
11631 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
11495 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
11392 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
11288 Mad River, New York, NY
11145 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
11082 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
11066 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
10882 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
10817 Heroes, Wichita, KS
10805 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
10802 BWW-Columbia, MD
10658 Teasers, Chicago, IL
10543 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
10412 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
10274 Residuals, Studio City, CA
10223 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
8964 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
8562 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
7743 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
5461 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ

Now, let's look at the cumulative score for the tournament so far:

CUMULATIVE POINTS, WEEK 2

25805 BWW-Kent, OH
24233 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
24231 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
23623 Mad River, New York, NY
23578 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
23288 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
22973 Teasers, Chicago, IL
22914 BWW-Arlington, VA
22480 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
22342 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
22287 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
22223 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
22194 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
21983 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
21776 Heroes, Wichita, KS
21751 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
21748 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
21399 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
21202 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
20978 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
19971 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
19935 BWW-Columbia, MD
19769 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
19529 Residuals, Studio City, CA
15799 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
12726 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ

From this, it LOOKS like The Fellowship at BWW-Kent has opened up a commanding lead in the tournament. But this is deceiving. When you drop a low score (as all teams get to do), The Fellowship is not even in the lead, trailing BWW-Arlington by a wafer-thin 9-pt. margin, with Adam's Mill hard on its heels:

WEEK 2 STANDINGS, LOW SCORE DROPPED

13348 BWW-Arlington, VA
13339 BWW-Kent, OH
13126 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
12472 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
12416 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
12335 Mad River, New York, NY
12315 Teasers, Chicago, IL
12157 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
12133 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
11947 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
11896 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
11495 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
11460 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
11440 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
11414 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
11176 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
11145 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
11082 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
10959 Heroes, Wichita, KS
10805 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
10805 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
10802 BWW-Columbia, MD
10412 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
10274 Residuals, Studio City, CA
8056 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
7265 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ

Thus, the tournament is still well up in the air, with a lot of movement possible in coming weeks. Good skill to all this Tuesday.

We have reached the midway point of the tournament, and in Week 3 we saw our third different leader in the weekly standings: Teddy B's (formerly Brewstir's), which posted a thumping, nearly 900-point win over the #2 team:

WEEK 3 RESULTS

13907 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
13028 BWW-Kent, OH
12871 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
12737 BWW-Arlington, VA
11695 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
11670 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
11280 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
11008 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
10872 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
10757 Mad River, New York, NY
10672 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
10672 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
10516 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
10403 Heroes, Wichita, KS
10314 Teasers, Chicago, IL
10280 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ
10213 BWW-Columbia, MD
10011 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
9270 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
9120 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
9089 Residuals, Studio City, CA
8950 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
8539 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
8163 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
7011 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
6414 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS

Turning to the cumulative points so far, it is important to remember that looks are still pretty deceiving at this point. Whereas it LOOKS like BWW-Kent has opened a very large lead...

CUMULATIVE POINTS

38833 BWW-Kent, OH
37195 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
35926 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
35651 BWW-Arlington, VA
34858 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
34380 Mad River, New York, NY
34073 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
33957 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
33503 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
33352 BWW-El Paso 2, TX

32179 Heroes, Wichita, KS
31994 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
31650 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK

30386 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
30148 BWW-Columbia, MD
29091 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
28618 Residuals, Studio City, CA
28410 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
28308 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
23006 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ
22213 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS

...the reality is that it is still very close once we drop low scores. BWW-Kent does have a lead, but is within easy striking distance of both BWW-Arlington (less than 300 points) and Teddy B's (less than 600 points). New Edinburgh, Big Guys, and Adam's Mill are bunched within 100 points of each other for 4-5-6:

DROPPING LOW SCORE

We are entering the final week of the tournament. Before posting the standings, I'd like to give a tip of the hat to Four Corners. Not only did it come in 1st in the East Network in what the scores indicate was a rather difficult game (Congrats!), but it also burnished its credentials as one of the most consistent teams in the tournament so far: Its four scores are 11,947, 11,631, 11,280, 12,503. Only Heroes (10,959, 10,817, 10,403, 10,375) has a smaller spread between high and low scores.

With that said, here are Tuesday's results:

12,503 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
12,234 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
12,101 Mad River, New York, NY
11,853 BWW-Kent, OH
11,815 BWW-Columbia, MD
11,739 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
11,371 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
11,127 BWW-Arlington, VA
11,016 Teasers, Chicago, IL
10,461 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
10,375 Heroes, Wichita, KS
10,306 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
10,206 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
10,132 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
10,085 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
9,906 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
9,735 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
9,582 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
9,537 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
9,484 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS
9,430 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
9,383 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
9,132 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
9,028 Residuals, Studio City, CA
8,778 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
8,505 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ

Four Corners' consistency has caused a shakeup in the cumulative points standings. Although cumulative points has not meant much so far (the dropped-score totals are a more accurate reflection of the standings), this week they are significant because they represent the absolute minimum score that any team can have. Four Corners just leapfrogged over three teams for second place here:

50686 BWW-Kent, OH
47361 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
47280 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
46778 BWW-Arlington, VA
46481 Mad River, New York, NY
46058 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
44303 Teasers, Chicago, IL
43494 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
43409 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
42851 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
42735 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
42632 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
42554 Heroes, Wichita, KS
42200 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
42146 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI

Now here are the cumulative scores with a low score dropped. Last week's logjam at 4-5-6 has broken up a bit, with Four Corners vaulting into 4th place. It is still relatively tight, though, with all three teams less than 400 points from each other:

38833 BWW-Kent, OH
37212 BWW-Arlington, VA
37195 Teddy B's, Roselle, IL
36081 Four Corners, Chapel Hill, NC
35926 Big Guys, Winnipeg, MB
35724 Mad River, New York, NY
34139 New Edinburgh Pub, Ottawa, ON
34073 Blue Goose, Cincinnati, OH
33989 Teasers, Chicago, IL
33962 Scooter's, Las Vegas, NV
33957 Houlihan's-Westbury, NY
33564 Adam's Mill, Manchester, CT
33394 Henry Hudson's, Oklahoma City, OK
33352 BWW-El Paso 2, TX
33014 Fletcher's, Kalamazoo, MI
32830 BWW-Columbia, MD
32267 Stadium Cafe, Addison, TX
32209 West Park Station, Cleveland, OH
32205 Broadway Bar and Grill, Nepean, ON
32189 Parlay Sports, Tallahassee, FL
32179 Heroes, Wichita, KS
31140 Houlihan's--Brick, NJ
30981 Dagwoods, Tampa, FL
28618 Residuals, Studio City, CA
26050 Nacho Mama's, Tempe, AZ
25283 Wallaby's, Lenexa, KS

The big story, of course, is the battle among the top three teams with only one game remaining. Teddy B's (playing at BWW-Bloomingdale) and BWW-Arlington are separated by only seventeen (17) points. Both are looking up at The Fellowship, which has opened up a 1,600-point lead over these teams. This means that BWW-Kent controls its destiny: any score north of 13,400 this week will clinch the tournament no matter what the other teams do.

Although The Fellowship's lead might seem to be nearly insurmountable, it is not. A few reminders will help keep things in perspective for the rivals at Teddy B's/BWW-Bloomingdale and BWW-Arlington:

1) BWW-Kent has yet to crack the 13,400-point barrier so far this tournament. It turns out that BrainBuster is a hard game.

2) Despite BrainBuster being a hard game, Teddy B's/BWW-Bloomindale got a score of 13,907 just the previous week. BWW-Arlington nearly got 13,400 the week before that.

3) Just last year, BWW-Arlington entered the final week with a sizable lead over BWW-Kent, with The Fellowship needing at least 13,500 to even have a chance. It managed to put up a big score and sniped the trophy away from the former Slammers by all of 81 points.

Thus, there is a precedent and recipe for either the Chicago or the D.C. team to win the trophy: A) Stay ahead of the other rival (for the Chicago team, it has to be by at least 18 points), B) Put up a big score (of which each team is fully capable); and C) See if The Fellowship chokes a little (of which it is fully capable--Exhibit A: This week's Showdown score in the McCarthy Cup semifinals).

(I should also mention that Four Corners, Big Guys, and Mad River also have a mathematical shot at the trophy, but they would have to put up near-perfect scores and would need a lot of help from the other teams to get there).

So, those are the standings and the stakes as we play the final game. Good skill to all!

Teddy B's will be playing at BWW Bloomingdale tonight (4/28). It is likely that Teddy B's will be dropping the ntn trivia game in the near future.

WOW--What a finish!

There was a little bit of just deserts and a whole lot of deja vu in the final week of the Tim (DINGO) Richardson Memorial BrainBuster Cup this week. Last year, BWW-Arlington had built an impressive lead going into the final week. When the dust settled, it had the highest cumulative score over the five weeks, but due to a sub-par performance and because every team got to drop a low score, The Fellowship came from way behind to snipe the trophy away.

This year, The Fellowship had built an impressive lead going into the final week. When the dust settled, it had the highest cumulative score over the five weeks, but due to a sub-par performance and because every team got to drop a low score, BWW-Arlington came from way behind to snipe the trophy away. With this, the tournament continues to hold a unique distinction: Every single time that it has been played, a team has come from behind in the last week to win the Cup.

Here are this week's results:

First of all, of course, congratulations are due to BWW-Arlington. Because of that team's outstanding play, the DINGO Cup will be leaving Northeast Ohio for the first time in its existence. We look forward to their hosting of next year's tournament.

Congrats, too, must go to Diamond Lil's/Brewstir's/Teddy B's/BWW-Bloomingdale for taking the bronze medal despite significant location challenges and some very stiff competition. Special mention must be made of Mad River for its hard charging finish that vaulted it into fourth place and just a few hundred points away from third. And Four Corners' famous consistency deserves note, too: it allowed the team to round out the top five.

In addition to my admiration and congratulations to BWW-Arlington, I would like to express my sincerest thanks to every team that chose to participate this year. This continues to be one of the most thrilling tournaments out there, with lots of lead changes and jockeying for position throughout. No matter where you placed, you can take satisfaction in knowing that your team is among the elite in one of the hardest games out there.

Last, as always, I'd like to express a fond remembrance of Tim Richardson, in whose memory we play the tournament. If he were here, I am sure he would throw in a droll, pithy, and perfect rejoinder to all of this hullabaloo. Alas, such a statement is beyond my capabilities, so I'll have to end with a simple, "We miss you, Tim."
